Formula Drift on Tour

In the sports world, the first week of April is commonly associated with the return of Major League Baseball. But car-racing enthusiasts have that timeframe marked on their calendars for a very different reason: the start of Formula Drift season.

Formula Drift is the leading international showcase of the auto-racing phenomenon known as drifting, where drivers intentionally oversteer their vehicles to make them slip and slide across the track in a thrilling display of controlled chaos. (Ever done donuts in your car in an empty parking lot? Now imagine trying to do that continually along a predetermined route without crashing into anything.)

Drifting originated in Japan in the 1970s before gaining traction in the U.S. in the '90s, culminating in the inaugural Formula Drift competition in 2004. Since its launch in Atlanta as a four-round, 16-car competition, Formula Drift has expanded into an eight-round, 32-car championship series, with racing sites spanning California to New Jersey.

In most car races, the winner is determined by one simple factor: who crosses the finish line first. Drifting, however, is actually closer in spirit to figure-skating than traditional racing, with competitors awarded leaderboard points according to three criteria: line, angle, and style. "Line" refers to the drivers' ability to follow a demarcated drift line established by the judges. "Angle" analyzes the drivers' control over their wheel alignment while mid-drift. "Style" essentially is a measure of drivers' fluidity and their willingness to careen as close as possible to the track wall without scraping it.

Formula Drift competitions are traditionally two-day events, beginning with the qualifying round, where drivers perform solo trial runs to accumulate points for a Top 32 placement on the leaderboard. On the second day, the qualifying drivers square off round-robin style in a pair of races where drivers take turns shadowing each other and are scored on their abilities to lead and follow. But even if you're not the sort to obsess over the nitty-gritty of scoring, Formula Drift can be enjoyed on a purely aesthetic level as the most artful and graceful form of professional auto racing.

When tickets were purchased I assume we had a spot to sit nope part of just standing group. They don’t even have tables for people to sit while eating their food. Bad experience in Long Beach left within 2 hours.

This was my first time attending FD. My son is a huge fan and has attended before. The event did not disappoint. From the drifting to the booths, food, car show and full bar! Such a fun day in a beautiful beach town.

This is my 4 time attending this same event. Compared to the past events and keeping in mind that this years was the 20 year I expected a lot more. When I say a lot more I mean show wise and booth give aways. In the past I would get some much free stuff from the booths like Falken. This year I walked all the vendor booths and after spending 110$ I came out with one bag with two shirts and three lanyards. For the admission price and the high prices of food, parking. It is definitely not worth going to this event again. Nitto tire needs to step it up. Especially for a sold out event!

I loved this drift experience. It was my first time going to LA for this event. I had so much fun just by seeing it. Throughout the event I kept smiling due to the excitement of seeing cars drifting. If another event like this presents I would definitely go again.

  • Awesome but pricey food

by Jay and boy on 4/8/22Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long BeachRating: 4 out of 5

This was an incredible event. Me and my 15 soon to be 16 year old son had a blast. Cars were amazing, I was shocked we could mingle with the drivers and get up and close to the cars and pit crews. Everything was beyond expectations except the price for food or drinks. Food was good but $20 for a small container of loaded fries or $6 for a bottle of water that is usually a buck?? Come on! Why leave a bad taste (no pun intended) to an incredible event?

  • Expected…

by Uly on 4/8/22Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long BeachRating: 5 out of 5

Everything was great, the event was up to what you’d expect. Adrenaline at every corner with the smoke of tires behind each car. Downsides were the huge lines for the restrooms, only for them to smell, and come out with no water to clean yourself up. As well as the WAYYY overpriced food. $16 for a hamburger the size of a mcdonald’s one. $6 for a bottle of water. Come on.

  • Awesome event

  • Formula d experience

by Speedfreek360 on 4/7/22Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long BeachRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was a hit!!! How cool to be able to walk around in the pits, check out a car show…and have it in the heart of an amenity filled location! Hotels, pike outlet, beach…it’s all there! And the event…can’t go wrong when you’re fully immersed in the action and allowed to go behind the scenes! For first timers, this won’t be the last…totally worth the experience and memories

  • Loved everything about it!

by TVBEEK on 4/6/22Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long BeachRating: 5 out of 5

This was the first time I'd ever been to a FD event and I had a blast! Plenty of booths, food, photo ops, driver meet ups. I went with my son and he was so enthralled as well. We're looking forward to the next event coming up!

  • Great display of a growing sport!

by Steve on 4/5/22Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long BeachRating: 4 out of 5

My only problem was that no one sits in their assigned seats. We showed up and were told that we would have to sit on the grass or stand as the seats were all filled, in spite of the tickets we held. We looked around and finally found an opening for the two of us. Why did we even buy the tickets when they first came out and hand pick our seats?? Otherwise, great entertainment.
