Formula Drift on Tour

In the sports world, the first week of April is commonly associated with the return of Major League Baseball. But car-racing enthusiasts have that timeframe marked on their calendars for a very different reason: the start of Formula Drift season.

Formula Drift is the leading international showcase of the auto-racing phenomenon known as drifting, where drivers intentionally oversteer their vehicles to make them slip and slide across the track in a thrilling display of controlled chaos. (Ever done donuts in your car in an empty parking lot? Now imagine trying to do that continually along a predetermined route without crashing into anything.)

Drifting originated in Japan in the 1970s before gaining traction in the U.S. in the '90s, culminating in the inaugural Formula Drift competition in 2004. Since its launch in Atlanta as a four-round, 16-car competition, Formula Drift has expanded into an eight-round, 32-car championship series, with racing sites spanning California to New Jersey.

In most car races, the winner is determined by one simple factor: who crosses the finish line first. Drifting, however, is actually closer in spirit to figure-skating than traditional racing, with competitors awarded leaderboard points according to three criteria: line, angle, and style. "Line" refers to the drivers' ability to follow a demarcated drift line established by the judges. "Angle" analyzes the drivers' control over their wheel alignment while mid-drift. "Style" essentially is a measure of drivers' fluidity and their willingness to careen as close as possible to the track wall without scraping it.

Formula Drift competitions are traditionally two-day events, beginning with the qualifying round, where drivers perform solo trial runs to accumulate points for a Top 32 placement on the leaderboard. On the second day, the qualifying drivers square off round-robin style in a pair of races where drivers take turns shadowing each other and are scored on their abilities to lead and follow. But even if you're not the sort to obsess over the nitty-gritty of scoring, Formula Drift can be enjoyed on a purely aesthetic level as the most artful and graceful form of professional auto racing.

Great display of a growing sport!

by Steve on 4/5/22Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

My only problem was that no one sits in their assigned seats. We showed up and were told that we would have to sit on the grass or stand as the seats were all filled, in spite of the tickets we held. We looked around and finally found an opening for the two of us. Why did we even buy the tickets when they first came out and hand pick our seats?? Otherwise, great entertainment.

by Slow.hachi on 4/5/22Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

Loved this so much. I've been to Irwindale before and Long Beach was amazing. If you have never seen drifting, you need to experience it.

Poor planning on event planners side. Entrance was not considered. Seating was a mess. I will never attend another formula drift Long Beach event.

    Good show, bad seats

by Craig sargood on 4/5/22Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

Formula drift “added” some seats, which was nice, what wasn’t nice was the fact that you couldn’t barely see the actual show. You could see the cars come out of the last turn, slow down and turn into the pit. Shame on you formula drift for taking peoples hard earned money for seats like that. Horrible seats added

    Formula Drift Event

by hlynn on 4/5/22Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

So much fun. My son and I went together as a gift to him for his birthday. He really enjoyed seeing many of his favorite drifters in competition. And he got to see some of them in person as well!! The event was great and we loved the positive atmosphere. No fighting throughout audience or in lines waiting for signatures either. That was a good experience. Thanks so much!!!

    Formula Drift is Awesome!

by Kyle on 4/5/22Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

I would recommend everyone attend a Formula Drift event in person. The events are fast paced, and full of adrenaline and excitement. During the down times, there are a lot of things to see and do. You can meet the drivers, see the cars, and visit all of the other promotional booths. I'm from southern California, and I intend to be at the 2 local events every year!

    Very disappointed

by 12 on 4/5/22Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

Very disappointed in how this event was handled. I got there 45 minutes before supposed start time and the drivers we already competing. On top of that, the line to enter was about 1 mile long so it took me and hour and a half to enter. I missed more than half of the top 32. I wouldn’t recommend Long Beach at all. Seats are bad only get to see 1 zone. I’d recommend saving money and go to irwindale later in the season. Sad to say I won’t be attending FDLB anymore.

Fun but not the best FD we’ve been to

by Sarahsarah on 4/5/22Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

The event was fun, however, far too many tickets were sold in our opinion. It was next to impossible to move around the venue with shoulder to shoulder crowds everywhere you went. There were “general admission” ticket holders blocking aisles, steps in bleachers, and all walking areas. The security staff gave up on checking tickets less than 30 minutes in on Saturday and we had to ask people to move out of our seats every time we got up to use the restroom or get food. Not very well planned or executed seating. The FD comp was fun to watch but ended pretty lame, not anyone’s fault just how it played out.

by Jay on 4/4/22Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

They had many venders and plenty of freebies. The formula drift show had a variety of cars including the new 400z and Toyota GR Corolla. They also had a car show section with awards to many beautiful unique cars.

    Great racing

by Mooseboy on 4/4/22Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

Ghe racing was great , fun and exciting ! The pits were great plenty of nice things to look at and buy. The food available was way over priced but tasty.the only real negative was getting in, only one way in and two hours after the gates opened there was still a 1/2 mile line waiting to get in , about 45 min. To an hour

Must see in person once at least

by R. F. on 4/4/22Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

what a great experience. You can watch this live for free on FB but you can't experience it unless you feel the bass of 6,8,12 cylinders firing off as these drivers send it. You'll never get the smell and vibe without being here in person. I will become a regular at these Socal events in LB and Irwindale!

Please add more staff at Bag Check and Ticket Entrance

by MT on 4/4/22Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

Please add more staff at Bag Check and Ticket Entrance. First time seeing a line to entrance reach back to Pine Street. Instead of 2 lines for bag check / ticket check, have 4 lines total, for the first 2 hours of opening. Also at Closing time open the gates instead of forcing the crowd to exit using the stair bridge.

    Seating was annoying!!

by lili on 4/4/22Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

The seating areas did not have the sections clear. The signs were too low, we had to wait until people left to see. Plus the people or security working Infront of the bleachers don’t know where the sections were. They just tell you how the sections are split up and we had to figure it out ourselves. Next time have all the sections labeled from the front or down the aisles. And there needs to be more bleachers. Seats were too close to each other and no room AT ALL. People attempting to get to their seats had to have the whole row get up on the way. I had to get up like 10 times for people, we decided to leave early cause it just wasn’t enjoyable anymore.
