Formula Drift on Tour
In the sports world, the first week of April is commonly associated with the return of Major League Baseball. But car-racing enthusiasts have that timeframe marked on their calendars for a very different reason: the start of Formula Drift season.
Formula Drift is the leading international showcase of the auto-racing phenomenon known as drifting, where drivers intentionally oversteer their vehicles to make them slip and slide across the track in a thrilling display of controlled chaos. (Ever done donuts in your car in an empty parking lot? Now imagine trying to do that continually along a predetermined route without crashing into anything.)
Drifting originated in Japan in the 1970s before gaining traction in the U.S. in the '90s, culminating in the inaugural Formula Drift competition in 2004. Since its launch in Atlanta as a four-round, 16-car competition, Formula Drift has expanded into an eight-round, 32-car championship series, with racing sites spanning California to New Jersey.
In most car races, the winner is determined by one simple factor: who crosses the finish line first. Drifting, however, is actually closer in spirit to figure-skating than traditional racing, with competitors awarded leaderboard points according to three criteria: line, angle, and style. "Line" refers to the drivers' ability to follow a demarcated drift line established by the judges. "Angle" analyzes the drivers' control over their wheel alignment while mid-drift. "Style" essentially is a measure of drivers' fluidity and their willingness to careen as close as possible to the track wall without scraping it.
Formula Drift competitions are traditionally two-day events, beginning with the qualifying round, where drivers perform solo trial runs to accumulate points for a Top 32 placement on the leaderboard. On the second day, the qualifying drivers square off round-robin style in a pair of races where drivers take turns shadowing each other and are scored on their abilities to lead and follow. But even if you're not the sort to obsess over the nitty-gritty of scoring, Formula Drift can be enjoyed on a purely aesthetic level as the most artful and graceful form of professional auto racing.
Lots of high speed action for auto racing. Great fun.
Awesome action throughout the day, only drawback was the lack of shade.
I recommend everyone to go and check out formulad at least once. Its not your typical start to finish around-and-around race...its easy to pick up on...and very exciting!
Friends and I have good times to watch drift track and we are deaf still can heard engine loud and feel beat! Formula Drift is one best car sport in the world! We are look forward watch again! I'm only disappoint is big tv screen have no close captional for deaf.
Well thought out event but here is where it can be improved. Assigned seats should be kept not just here is your section. People were passing the ticket when they only bought one. There should be more room for the drifters so they can go all out
i just have 1 complaint.there were not as many babes as usual.i thought there would be more models, boothbabes, AND ONLY 3 HOOTER GIRLS??????SAD
I had heard of FD a while back and bought these tickets as a gift for my fiancé. We got there right on time and walked around the vendor booths and then got seated. It was a lot of fun and there was so much to do! Lots of fun I would definitely recommend it!
Always love formula D in the streets of long beach. Can never say anything bad about it
The drifting was very good...I liked that they provide a two hour break in between. The vendors were good too. Enjoyed. Will be back again and again. On another note, I was under the assumption that kids 12 and under were free (per the website..) which was not the case. When we arrived with my niece and nephew (11 and 9yrs old) they said NOPE - they have to be 5 yrs and under for free...we ended up forking out another $60 for them.....I just want ACCURATE INFO.
This event in the LBC was EPIC!!! Haven't had that much fun since my first time in Disneyland when I was eight haha... Totally worth the trip!!!
The teams and cars were great, the vendors were great. The location was good. Things I would change for the next event would be more food vendors because the lines were too long and some vendors ran out of food after standing in line for over an hour in the sun. The track was cool but visibility was very limited and the sun was directly in most people eyes. There was not enough rest rooms and no place to wash your hands after using the rest rooms. Maybe use a contractor that has the mobile building rest rooms that are attended by a staff. It was very very hot and there were no places for old or very young to sit down and get out of the sun. Kids in front of us were chain smoking and the security was not staffed enough to keep up on the rowdy stupid acting teens. The car show had some very poor examples that were not show worthy. But over all it was fun.
It was greatest car event i have ever been to, the noise it self was amazing
Since the event was sold out I thought it was gonna be PACKED, but it wasn't as packed as i thought it'd be. This was my first time at a Formula D event and all I really gotta say is..the entire event and cars were amazing!
The event itself was awesome! Just a bunch of people and the bleachers were super small! Aside from that was awesome!
So awesome! The event was a blast. Loved being able to chat with the drivers and their crews. Look forward to irwindale.
