Florida Gators Men's Basketball History
The first tip-off for the Gators was in 1915, when C. J. McCoy was head coach of both the men's basketball and football programs at the school. The University of Florida was a founding member of the Southeastern Conference in 1932. It wasn't until after Florida built their current indoor sports facility, the O'Connell Center, in 1980, that the Gators played in their first NCAA tournament in 1987.
Under the Gators’ first full-time basketball coach Norm Sloan, Florida qualified for six consecutive postseason matchups, with three appearances in the NIT and March Madness tournaments apiece between 1984 and 1989. Sloan’s tenure also delivered a run to the Sweet Sixteen during the school’s first NCAA tournament berth in 1987 and their first SEC regular season championship in 1989.
From 1996 to 2015, head coach Billy Donovan led the Gators to nine straight NCAA Tournaments starting in 1999, plus six regular season conference championships, four SEC tournament championships, four Final Four appearances and two NCAA championships, in 2006 and 2007. The Florida Gators men’s basketball team won their third national championship as well as their fifth SEC tournament championship in 2025.
More than two dozen Florida Gators have gone on to become professional basketball players in the NBA. The Gators have a long-running in-state rivalry with the Florida State Seminoles, and their annual contest is the only out-of-conference game for both of the two oldest college teams in the state.

The event was great, from purchasing tickets to a Gator victory!
There's nothing quite like college sports. This was our first trip to Gainesville and we stayed at the Reitz Union Hotel on campus which is a short walk from the stadium. The mid-court seats were in nose bleed territory, but a great view of the game. I enjoyed watching Macklin take it to Varnardo all night, his best game as a Gator. A lot of excitement for $20 a seat!
Great atmosphere and great campus. The O'Connell center is located right on campus. It is a modern facility and had lots of parking. I enjoyed the game and the fans were into the game. Go gators!
the game was a lot of fun, greatly disappointed in the seating, i requested BEST SEATS POSSIBLE, we got the nose bleed section. lesson learned , i won't leave it up to you to choose, and i ordered these tickets before christmas.....
There's nothing quite like college sports and the Gator Nation rarely if ever disappoints. The atmosphere within the O'Connell Center is great anyways but our seats (3 row) were fantastic. And hey! the Gators won!
Excitement exploded as Florida's Chandler Parsons sunk a dramatic 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Gators a 58-56 victory over South Carolina.
Gators didn't look pretty, but we came out of it with a "W"!!
Could not have been a better game for three 15 year old boys (or myself), 2 of whom had never been to a UF basketball game. The 3rd said "that was a game you wish to be at, the only thing better would have been if he'd (Parsons) made the three from halfcourt!".
Awesome game! To the buzzer! Support basketball at uf
it was awesome! seats were great and the every seat in the oconnell center is great
I love getting together with the Gator faithful in the O Connell center. They brought back the grim reaper. Albert was amazing as usual. The guys gave LSU more than they could handle. Go Gators!!!
The atmosphere at the Gator game was absolutely awesome!!!!
Having never been to a Gator Basketball game it was great! I have attended hundreds of football games over the years but decide to try watching some other sports. I am already planning my next trip to see them play again!
Great place to see a college basketball game! Good seats, good fans, great game!
Go Cats!!!!!! As a lifelong Wildcat fan I was more than excited about this event.
The game was great and there was plenty of seating, HOWEVER the organization of the stadium was not to be desired. The tickets actually printed section, row and seat numbers however we were advised it was general addmission and were instructed we could sit anywhere from section A-E. This caused a problem when during the event people would come looking for thier seats because they thought there were assigned.
number 2 kentucky at florida what a game as usual loved it the gators almost pulled it off and showed were not that bad good game
I was able to purchase 2 tickets to the UK vs. UF basketball game, at The "O" Dome in Gainesville, Florida! The game was a sell out, and the tickets I got were just awesome!! Great Lower level, and for a GREAT price!!
If Florida will ever make the NCAA tournament again? They play so well in stretches, I hope coach Donavon can get these guys to play a full game.
