About

The year 2013 was a back-to-basics year for John Ondrasik, better known by his stage name, Five for Fighting, as he reunited with longtime producer Gregg Wattenberg and released "Bookmarks," his first album in four years. The lead single, "What If," marked a return to the formula that made earlier hits, "Superman" and "100 Years," so memorable. Never reliant on studio trickery, Five for Fighting in concert are just as moving, with an experienced backing band and Ondrasik at the piano, singing in his trademark falsetto. Ticket buyers looking for a little loudness in their rock won't be disappointed, either, as Five for Fighting supply the occasional rock anthem in their repertoire as well. Ultimately, whether he's playing loud or soft, Ondrasik's shows are about intimacy and connecting with each individual. In that sense, they're a natural extension of "Bookmarks," connecting with listeners on his long-explored themes of love and reflection.

Ondrasik started Five for Fighting after trying opera singing in college and graduating with a degree in applied science and mathematics. Wisely choosing the singer/songwriter route, he released his debut album, "Message for Albert," in 1997 and followed up with the album that established him as a force in the industry, 2000's "America Town" and what became a sort of anthem in the wake of 9/11 -- "Superman (It's Not Easy)." He confirmed that success three years later with "The Battle of Everything" and the chart-topping single, "100 Years." Since then, philanthropy has been an increasing part of his activities, most notably with his "CD for the Troops" project, and he's also dabbled in sports writing and public speaking. Though he's scaled back his touring in recent years, music is still his first love, and as the lyrical spectrum of "Bookmarks" shows, the yearning for connection is still there.

Five For Fighting - worth the wait!!

by savagefour on 3/10/10The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

We missed Five For Fighting when they were at XPN a couple months ago. Actually we had tickets but also bought tickets for David Grey the same night at the Tower, and since we had seen FFF at the Keswick a couple years ago, decided to see David Grey. So we sold our tickets to friends who never saw John perform before. Sooo, we were thrilled that FFF were coming back to the Philadelphia area again! This was the first time we have ever been to the Electric Factory and although intimate, I was glad we sat on the "bleachers" as it would have been hours standing. The concert was amazing, electrifying, and passionate, and it was worth going out on a Monday night!!! Bravo, and hope they continue to write and perform!!

    One hit song after another

by FiveforFightingFanatic on 3/9/10The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

John Ondrasik (FFF) has really begun accumulating a library of blockbuster songs and he started his show off by rolling from one popular hit to another. He got right into it without a lot of fanfare, which gave the fans what they came for - that unique blend of vocals, musical storytelling, piano and guitar. Always the consumate entertainer, Ondrasik paused long enough during the show to offer bits of insight into certain songs and to playfully reach out to the audience.

First time at the Electric Factory.. beautiful place. Loved the setting. Both Matt Wertz and Five for Fighting put on an enjoyable show. Little short, but enjoyable.

    Fantastic Evening

by DrKate on 3/9/10The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

Finally, after years of listening, the stars & planets aligned - allowing us to get to a Five For Fighting concert. It was well worth the wait -- John & co. gave us all a memorable evening, blending new and older material (along with some great stories). Terrific energy from everybody, yet a comfortable/casual feeling, like being in John's (very oversized) living room.

Anyone who doesn't see this event is craaazzzy

by MMBINNJ on 3/9/10The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

John pours his heart and soul into a show as does his band. His performance is amazing. He plays all the songs you want to hear- not that I don't love the new Slice Album. His venues are small - and what a great idea- personal. He is so close to the audience. At one point he sits and just sings. You will become such a devoted fan- I only wish I could keep 5FF a secret- but alas I cannot.

EXCELLENT SHOW!!! It was the first time I ever saw him and I would definitely go again! He is so personable and entertaining and I love how he explains his songs. It gives so much more meaning when I listen. I would highly recommend him to any age group!! His opening act Matt Wertz was also great!! I dragged along a couple of friends, and they can't stop talking about what a great time it was!!!

Five for Fighting is a great performance band

by Beryl2 on 3/6/10Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom - New York

John is so charismatic and his heart really comes through even in the old popular songs that I am sure he sings over and over. He is extremely animated on stage and in fact comes down into the audience for that extra touch of personal contact. He was very amazing as was his drummer and guitarists. The venue was excellent--comfortable and great visibility....good price too!

    excellent show

by barmit on 3/6/10Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom - New York

I was very happily surprised with this show. I really didn't know many of his songs so I had no expectations. He is a wonderful singer, songwriter and talented muscian. I will keep my eyes out for him in the future - I would most definitely see him again if he came around the area.

Five for Fighting worth a 5 hour trip

by Beachdiver on 3/5/10Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom - New York

John is an amazing singer, His voice was clear and strong, and he has a great range. My 5 hour round trip was worth it. Not being a New Yorker I found the crowd a little rude, and loud. The show went way too fast for me,I could listen to John for hours. Do go see this show if you have a chance.

Five for Fighting was genious once again!

by 4hhs on 3/5/10Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom - New York

I have Seen FFF several times and they never disappoint. John loves to be with the people and it is always so nice to see that. He appreciates his fans and it always comes thru. His voice was awesome last night in NYC. He is always very uplifting. I left whistling the tune to his song about Hope.

John Ondrasik is such a humble and loyal guy.

by Flesh on 3/5/10Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom - New York

I saw John A.K.A. Five For Fighting for a third time. As always, it was a smaller venue and John performed to his fans on a personable level. This time around he played a request by the audience acoustic style. It was his Augie Nieto song. I had yelled out and asked for him to explain the song and so he did. At the end of the show, he had told everyone to get up off their seats and feel free to crowd around the stage. He then told us he would sign autographs and take pictures after the show. This was so exciting for me and a moment I would never forget as I got my ticket signed by the whole band and got to thank John for writing a song about a person who had died from ALS, which is very meaningful to me. The show is definitely worth seeing!

    John is Great! Yea John!

by RELA on 3/5/10Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom - New York

The show was, as expected, great. John has a lot of energy and a very unique voice. The artist who opened the show, Matt Wertz, was very good as well. The only negatives we that Five for Fighting only played for an hour and 20 minutes (although they did hang around to meet people and take pictues whch was a plus). The other was that the Ballroom is on the 7th floor and they were having issues with the 2 elevators they had. We ended walking up the 7 flights - whew!

Five for fighting was great-vocals are better in person than on the CDs-great performer to audience connection! Not crazy about the venue-but it was close to Penn Station.

    five for fighting

by KLeeNY on 3/5/10Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom - New York

excellent show. excellent venue. sound/acoustics were phenomenal. It was a pleasant mix of - all out band performances, solo piano performances, solo and group acoustic guitar performances, and an a capella performance. He is very impressive live as well as his bandmates. Opening act - Matt Wertz was also very good. my only dissapointment (nothing to with band) was that i had a kid with his father sitting next to me that for the ENTIRE performance was taking pictures and videotaping it, obstructing my view - i had to move seats. I wish venues would be more strict on their policies re: videotaping and picture taking. It's unfair to those of us who want to enjoy the show - particularly when u paid for great seats.

    Great Night

by DCNYC on 3/5/10Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom - New York

Matt Wertz started the show with a bang. The audience was truly taken in by his talent and his authenticity. His vocals along with his group were outstanding, and after his set he mingled with the audience like a kid in a candy shop. He introduced himself to all that waited to meet him, and he could not hide his happiness. Five for fighting as usual showed just how talented and gifted a group can be. John's vocals were crisp and sharp, and his stories along with his minimally produced segments produced some wow moments. The band was tight, and the music choices were great. It was like being in an intimate show with real talent. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

    Good concert...Venue was sketchy

by JRedmoney on 3/5/10Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom - New York

The concert was great. They played well. There were only 3-4 new songs. The venue acuistics were good. The rows were too close, especially given the fact that the place was only 75% full. They played great songs and the intros John gave for how or why he wrote the songs. Would definitely go again

more of a sit down and chill after work kind of concert. wouldn't give him an entertainer of the year award or anything.
