    Great show

by rdavidz on 11/19/10Apollo Theater - New York

Excellent show! Joe, Ben and Dhani looked like they really had fun performing too. Perfect ending, loved the extra tracks thrown in, like In the Sun and the PJ Harvey tune.

Fistful of Mercy had no Mercy

by Brasslotus on 11/19/10Apollo Theater - New York

First of all I did not go to see the headlining band. I came to see the opening act which was Alain Johannes. The Apollo crowd was too damn loud and talked the whole time while Alain was playing. There were several times the people near me were shushing the people to stop talking for all others who wanted to enjoy his music. The Apollo people didn't stop that......they just enforced people not to take pictures with their cell phones which is totally ridiculous if you ask me. Secondly I thought I made a mistake on the purchase because Alain's name wasnt even on the ticket. Can't wait to see him again in a more intimate and crowd friendly setting.

3 great talents meshed into one beautiful sound!

by suesnu on 11/19/10Apollo Theater - New York

Show was smooth and tight. They practically dont need to look at one another to know what the other is thinking .Great sound and harmony. Crowd way too serious. The band was begging for the crowd to dance. Lighten up NY! Not a bad seat in the house....long live the Apollo theatre.

Great performance. Artists seemed happy to be on stage and communicated that to their public. We also really liked the introductory band. Great moment

Fistful of Mercy at The Apollo - awesome!

by NoExpiration on 11/19/10Apollo Theater - New York

Earlier this week I went to the world-famous Apollo Theater in Harlem to see Fistful Of Mercy. They are a supergroup that features Ben Harper, Joseph Arthur and Dhani Harrison. They also feature violinist Jessy Greene. Longtime readers of my blog No Expiration (google it) know that I'm a huge fan of Ben's, but it was interesting to see him in this different context: he wasn't the bandleader, he was one of three singer/songwriters. Actually, this was my second time seeing them: I had filmed an in-studio performance with them at my day job a few weeks ago (included in my post at No Expiration). Radio performances are cool. But there's nothing that compares with a group playing in front of an audience, and add the mojo of the Apollo to the mix, and you have everything you need for a great show. Fistful definitely delivered on that! They played mostly songs from their recently released debut album, As I Call You Down, including my two favorite songs "Things Go 'Round" and "Father's Son." The highlight of the show, for me, may have been their cover of PJ Harvey's "To Bring You My Love." That was a trip for me, since (a) it is the title track of one of my favorite albums, and (b), I saw Ben and The Innocent Criminals open for PJ at the Beacon Theater when she was touring for the album of the same name. Fistful's cover really knocked me out. I also loved their cover of Bob Dylan's "Buckets Of Rain" (from Blood On The Tracks). I don't want to write much about Dhani's resemblence to his dad, but watching him sing a song by his dad's good friend and bandmate gave me chills. I also loved their cover of The Velvet Underground's "Pale Blue Eyes," maybe Lou Reed's finest moment. They did one of Ben's songs, "Please Me Like You Want To" and also the one Joseph Arthur song that I really know, "In The Sun." Maybe even better than those songs was the album's closer, which ended the show, "With Whom You Belong." It was a super powerful moment, they unplugged their instruments and went to the edge of the stage, and played them unamplified. The song isn't a hit, but the words are easy enough to remember, and everyone in the audience sang along. It was really powerful and also really fun. I think this is what they will close their shows with in twenty years. They seemed to enjoy performing together, I bet they'll be doing Fistful off and on for a long time. Here's hoping they do.

    Wonderful!

by KiwiGirlInSeattle on 11/16/10Showbox at the Market - Seattle

A great show - no fussing about, the band got right into the music from the very beginning of their time on stage. The combination of their voices is great and the fiddle added an extra dimension to it.

This was the best musical performance I've seen in years. Definitely makes the top 3 concerts of my lifetime. 3 very talented musicians on one stage. Don't miss this!

Fistful of Mercy is Simply Amazing

by 11cmf on 11/11/10Showbox at the Market - Seattle

My yearning for Ben Harpers music lead to pre-ordering their first cd without any review. This debut cd is one of very few that I listened to and truely enjoyed after the first go around. In, my opinion, a cd takes a few listens to in order to appreciate the music. When I can truely hear an album on the first take, it's special. With that being said, the concert was even better. The Showbox at the Market venue is incredible for seeing great artists in a small, cozy environment. Joseph Arthur has an incredible voice and the three artists complement each other quite well. All three have distinct voices that flourish at the right moments. In addition, Jesse Greene is an amazing musician and was phenomenal with the violin. The four musicians were clearly enjoying their time together on stage, which is even better for a small venue. Fistful of Mercy are great and I'd recommend anyone who wants an incredible night of electrifying music to see them perform.
