Loved the movie....as in watched it 50 times loved it
by Barrie average on 6/19/19Tennessee Theatre - KnoxvilleThe Tennessee theater was nice and there were some good songs, but in general the show was average at best. There was a large discrepancy from the quality of the writing from the first act and the second. The show started very mediocre, several of the solos being so ordinary they were hard to sit thru. It did build, however, and the last song before the intermission was the best so far. My wife and I thought, ok, it’s going to pick up now, and it did...for the first half of the second act (the song between James and Sylvia was strikingly better than the rest of the music, as was the dinner table song and circus of your mind. Then, It dropped right off. I’m not sure was the cast just liked those songs more, or whether it some of the songs were fillers but the difference was notable. The boys were cute and overall did a good job but one song that they sung was pretty poor (off keyand (flat)) and I felt really sad for him. The leading man had a strong voice but lacked a certain depth of emotion, he sang with the same inflection as his speaking voice and the over preciseness of his phrasing and some of the way he attacked the notes left some subtlety and tenderness to be desired. Hook Sylvia and Mrs Du Maurier were the best performers at the show and for me saved what otherwise would have been quite a disappointment. Ultimately, if you have not seen the movie, go see this and you should be satisfied, otherwise, you are forewarned. No one can replace the portrayal either of Barrie or Peter given. I wanted to like it... I wanted to love it. Can you imagine adding heart-rending songs and rollicking show tunes to one of your favorite stories?!? In the end I just didn’t,
