This performance was outstanding. I wasn't sure I'd like the modernized setting, but it worked well. The themes in Faust are universal and very much with us today; the visuals projected behind the performers were very effective. The singing was wonderful and I never had a problem hearing anyone. And our symphony musicians played beautifully; this is incredible music from Gounod, and it was played to perfection. Bravo!
I had high expectations and thought there was a innovative a new direction happening with as op but again was diss appointed . My guest was a first time opera viewer and was really diss appointed as well .
The staging was the real problem. The modern costumes didn't fit and the staging itself was distracting as were the numerous intermissions.
Was disappointed in the modern staging and the sets; one shouldn't mess with perfection.
Amazingly talented cast in a disastrous production. I was shocked to find out the set and costume design were done by the same person because there was a complete disconnect, it looked like a jumbled mess. With the exception of the devil, the costumes lacked any sign of a clear choice and in many cases were not even properly tailored or fitted for the cast member. In the third act, there were two unacceptably long pauses (almost 6 minutes) where the curtain went down so they could change the set. I felt like a cheap attempt to attract a younger audience, throwing in cheap laughs like a Lady Gaga impersonator, tastelessly un-choreographed grinding in a bar scene, and a tacky video screen with disco balls, ugly flowers, and fireworks so distracting that it was impossible to even focus on the performers. The director's attempted social commentary on our over-stimulated society was ill-conceived and did not convey. The majority of the people sitting near me left at the first intermission, I wish I had followed.
The modern approach did not work for me or the other 7 people we were with. The voices were excellent but the words in the back drop reminded me of a Hallmark card...nurses in short dresses? what's that all about. This is opera, not a production of Rent...I hope I can expect more traditional opera in the future.
As a junior in the high school mixed choir, we sang 'Long Live the Dance' (I think it was called that) and wished that some day I could see and hear the real opera Foust. My wish has now been fulfilled--60 years later! It made me very, very happy. My thanks to the entire Foust production for a wonderful evening.
So happy to have attended this production - I almost didn't end up coming, but changed my mind at the last moment. Fantastic singers, innovative staging, great fun in revolutionizing an old gem of an opera.
I really enjoyed this over the top excellent performance. You can't see it in Phoenix it any more, but will be in Tucson next weekend. Definitely worth the trip. The orchestra was top notch. Singers were great.
Great modern take on Faust. I won't ruin it for those who have not seen it, but the ending was a little too much on the sacrilegious side of things. Not reflecting the true opera at all. But still, great performances and staging.
The singing was amazing, and the stage direction, especially near the end, was spot-on.
