About ESSENCE Festival

Since its 1995 debut, the ESSENCE Festival of Culture has helped shape, define, and celebrate black music and culture. Held every July 4th weekend, the multi-day event initially was meant to be a one-time affair to celebrate the 25th anniversary of ESSENCE magazine. However, it turned out to be an incredibly impactful and empowering event, prompting its return the following year and subsequently evolving into one of the largest and most highly regarded annual festivals in the United States.

While you'll need to purchase tickets to catch the music at #essencefest, anyone can check out the free daily activities and panels held throughout the weekend which includes expert panels, workshops and shopping focused on beauty, health and wellness, entrepreneurship, and more.

This year marks the 30th birthday of the Essence Festival of Culture! The party with a purpose" always includes a stacked lineup of music's biggest names in hip-hop, R&B, soul, funk, and gospel. Throughout the years, there have been many memorable performances and this year will be no different. Buy your tickets and come party with us for our dirty thirty!

    Living Up To My UNEXPECTATIONS

by Not Quite An Essence Virgin on 7/5/23

I did NOT expect all of the commercial breaks! Those clearly could be put on for the majority of the opening and within a REAL intermission. WHAT is Hip Hop without LL, HELL Will Smith could of used a come back & Jazzy Jeff probably would have liked the chance to be on stage. Spinderella and MC Lyte could have been on stage all 3 nights. What am I saying? You could have ROCKED MY BELLS with LL and some other rappers. A few one hit wonders would have been impressive "I SAW YOU"do it before. Warn me about changing seats, no super Lounges and an akward stage in advance. Do better - I don't want our relationship to end up in the friendzone as Hulu & Hangout.

    A wonderful experience!

    by Yvette M on 7/5/23

The Essence Festival is something I've wanted to attend for decades. It mainly met expectations and the app was very helpful for knowing what was scheduled when. However, didn't give you the location of many events so I had to run around finding staff to help me find certain events. I missed Deon Cole's talk for this reason. Long lines for everything too meant I had to attend fewer events. Overall a great event.

    Good experience

    by Dirtysouthflava on 7/5/23

I had an overall good experience. The lineups did not flow well together and sound was horrible. Friendly staff. Need more different types of food vendors.

    So Much!!

    by Robin on 7/5/23

I have not been to essence festival in years. And this is my first time doing all three nights of concerts. By the time it was all over, I was exhausted and happy! Everyone that showed up, turned it out and all the surprise guests that showed up made it even better, this was one of the great ones! If I had to complain, it appeared there was no sound check for Lauren Hill, so her vocals were drowned out by the orchestra and band she had for the first few songs. And that the only tickets available first were. The 3 nights only, and not single night. Those came later. Thanks essence festival!! Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us next year!

    Amazing Experience!!!

    by Riah G on 7/5/23

The Essence Festival of Culture is a HIT every year. Such a beautiful atmosphere to be around for the entire weekend. The culture of New Orleans mixed with good music, fun, and great people. You cannot go wrong. Book the 3-Day package! You won’t regret it.,

    Loved Megan Thee Stallion!

    by AMD on 7/5/23

I didn't like how Essence crammed a bunch of acts I didn't really care anything about into the show before Megan - who I came to see. Other than that, Megan was great, as usual! However, I also didn't like how Essence cut Megan set list short.

    Great artists, bad audio

    by Brenda on 7/5/23

There were a lot of great artists over the 3 days of Essence Fest. It was truly unique to see all of these artists in one place, for one flat price, given the high cost of concert tickets these days. There are a couple of things that can improve for next time -- audio, duration and communication. The audio was not great. It was hard to hear the artists over the background music and the audio for the hosts was, at times, overmodulated. Additionally, the concerts ran quite long. They started at 7pm and wouldn't conclude until after 1am. I spoke to some people who've been to Essence Fest in years past and they said there were "super lounges"where multiple artists perform at the same time and people can see who they want to see. It's hard to say which is better. On the one hand, you can pick and choose which artists you see. On the other hand, you won't miss anyone if they're all back-to-back. It can't be easy to satisfy a range of musical tastes, especially given the range of age in the audience. Lastly, the communication of scheduled events left a little to be desired. We were told to "go to the app", but some information wasn't updated. The times that each act was hitting the stage wasn't released until the night of the first concerts and RSVP opportunities didn't exist until the day of. The registration process for the convention was also not very clear and led to clusters at the entry to the Convention Center.

    My 1st Essence Fest

    by MMK on 7/5/23

This was my first Essence Festival and I had a great time. The only thing I'd add is a clear understanding that the doors open a six and the concert starts at 7:00PM. I was thinking the concert opposite, that it started at 6PM. I got there at 5:15PM, thinking the doors opened early like most concerts. I adjusted my time/travels for the next two days. So other than that it was a wonderful experience!

    Sunday Night's Line Up

    by Lamar on 7/5/23

What a great concert and venue. Salt-n-Pepa definitely delivered. Meg, the headliner, appeared to be what the women were looking for. Then the surprise of the night was Lil Wayne, what a professional and all around good entertainer. Thanks Essence Fest 2023!

    Lineup Needed Some Work

    by L.Bahia.H on 7/5/23

I really wasn’t inspired by the concert lineup on any day, but received last minute information 2 hours before the concert on Sunday that Lil Wayne was added, which was enticing enough to buy tickets. His performance alone was worth the price of the ticket; however, the flow of the show left for a rollercoaster of emotions. The days of the super lounges are missed because some of the artists on the main stage are better suited for a smaller venue. Conversely, the events at the convention center were expertly curated.

    EXPENSIVE!!!

    by Ade on 7/5/23

I have attended several Essence Festival at the Superdome and the 2023 event was the most expensive (both for the tickets and food/drink). The venue's air-conditioner was not working properly and there so many time-consuming delay's in-between performances

    Great time

    by DeeFry on 7/5/23

I really enjoyed myself. Three nights of concerts from 7 until 1 or 2 can be a lot, so for folks who are interested in attending. Be aware of that.

    Essence fest 1st time

    by Tasha on 7/5/23

The essence fest was definitely a memorable experience. I believe the venue needs upgrades better food and accommodation. Also, there were too many extended breaks between performance. You definitely have to be well rested and hydrated to last the entire evening.

    Concert Experience

    by Lissa on 7/5/23

I love the idea of having several of my favorite artists perform in one night however, Friday night seemed like they did not get all of the kinks out. There were huge wait times in between each act and probably partly because they were stalling for the headliner, “Lauryn Hill”. By the time Lauryn came out she was over an hour late, the music was way too loud and it was a huge disappointment! People began leaving because before and while she was performing. I won’t wait for her again. Saturday seemed to flow a lot better, it’s just a long night starting from 6-1 am. We were too tired to do anything afterwards. Overall, I would still come back “Dougie Fresh, Kid Capri, Missy Elliot, and many more made the experience worth while, it’s just a long night.
