About ESSENCE Festival

Since its 1995 debut, the ESSENCE Festival of Culture has helped shape, define, and celebrate black music and culture. Held every July 4th weekend, the multi-day event initially was meant to be a one-time affair to celebrate the 25th anniversary of ESSENCE magazine. However, it turned out to be an incredibly impactful and empowering event, prompting its return the following year and subsequently evolving into one of the largest and most highly regarded annual festivals in the United States.

While you'll need to purchase tickets to catch the music at #essencefest, anyone can check out the free daily activities and panels held throughout the weekend which includes expert panels, workshops and shopping focused on beauty, health and wellness, entrepreneurship, and more.

This year marks the 30th birthday of the Essence Festival of Culture! The party with a purpose" always includes a stacked lineup of music's biggest names in hip-hop, R&B, soul, funk, and gospel. Throughout the years, there have been many memorable performances and this year will be no different. Buy your tickets and come party with us for our dirty thirty!

    Three days is too much..

by GlennDale on 7/4/10Louisiana Superdome - New Orleans

The convension center exhibit and promotion were excellent on Friday when the crowd was light. On Friday you received special attention from the sponsor and received good gifts and treats. The Friday night concerts were excellent and Janet gave a great show. We look forward to here doing a tour. On Saturday, the large crowd made it seem very distracting from the promoter's message or entertainment. Saturday, Alicia Key's show lightly boring. The attendees were responding with very little excitement and there were a lot of empty seats. Several people were sleeping thru her performance. It was so boring the audience started leaving before she finished her last song.

    Alicia Keys was great!

by Marsha79 on 7/4/10Louisiana Superdome - New Orleans

LL Cool J still has it after all these years, and Ms. Gladys Night is a classic. Joe in the Super Lounge was wonderful, and of course Alicia Keys was outstanding! This event has never failed to impress me. I will back!

My First Time Will Be my Last!

by TigerLilyofDC on 7/3/10Louisiana Superdome - New Orleans

This was my first time attending Essence...I have heard so many great stories from friends over the past several decades regarding Essence that I finally decided to come and see for myself. I even booked my hotel room and airfare in October of 2009, for the 2010 Essence Festival just to show you how excited I was in coming. The first major disappointment was to find out that Frankie Beverly would not be performing this year! What a SHOCK? Frankie closing out the festival was an Essence tradition; why change it now? I had great expectations based on the caliber of entertainers this year, DESPITE the absence of Frankie and Maze. The Friday night show was disappointing and here's why: 1. The acoustics in the Superdome were awful, not sure if that was a direct result of the sound production company 2. A number of technical glitches with the audio and video during the evening; several times, the sound went out for several minutes at a time which created a terrible experience for attendees. Also, all of the jumbo screens were not on during the performances. The jumbo screens only came on during Charlie Wilson's performance. For the amount of money that you were charging for tickets, it was a rip-off, especially if I had paid for the $1,000 tickets up front.

    VIP

by Charliesnumberonefansal on 7/3/10Louisiana Superdome - New Orleans

The lineup is great, Charlie and Janet are true artist with rare exceptional talent. However, more work on VIP. Food was aweful..poor selection and hot food was cold. Limited bar selection and staff to keep food appearance looking fresh or stock napkins and eating utensils. One celebrity..Boris thus far. VIP was not really VIP but maybe next year they will do better. Directions to VIP area was unknow to staff. The price is fine if u get what was advertised but we didn't. Still want someone to explane the and more on the platnium package. Again nothing special about VIP...will not do it again but will continue to come to the festival as I have for many years.

Where else can you see a multitude of stars on one given night. You have the main stage and superlounges that makes the event one big party for a reasonable price.

    Janet was unbelievably outstanding

by Adventure on 7/3/10Louisiana Superdome - New Orleans

The event wast outstanding. I would have given it a 5 start except Raphael Sadiq should have been in the superlounge not the main stage. Joe should be on the mainstage and not the superlounge. I was somewhat disappointed in Raphael. He ran through his major hits and dweled on songs that he could have kept. Everyone else was excellent. Monica did her thing. Charlie Wilson is always on his game. The only person who could followup Charlie is Janet. Janet is truly a high comfortable, accomplished, outstanding stage performer. What more would you expect from Michael's little sister.

    BETTER THAN EXPECTED

by Odie4life on 7/3/10Louisiana Superdome - New Orleans

Being a New Orleans native & this being my 1st, yes 1st, Essence I'd have to say that I really REALLY enjoyed my 1st taste of Essence last night!!! Monica, Raphael Saadiq, Charlie Wilson, & Janet did the DAMN thing last night... Charlie Wilson tore it up, while Janet *takes a deep breath, then another*... WOOOOOOOOWWWWWW, she made me go home with a smile :-D All of them did a pretty good job as far as their performances go, they were well deserving of being on the main stage. My $$ was DEFINITELY well spent...

    Great show, but...

by GeeCue on 7/3/10Louisiana Superdome - New Orleans

This years Essence Fest was great. I had wonderful seats, sat next to wonderful people and saw a wonderful show. But with any event, their is always something that rubs you the wrong way. In this case, their were only 2. Number 1: During Janets portion, her stage presents was more focused on the far right and center. I was located in the C section, 1st row. She came to that section all but 4 times, and only stayed a minute at the most. Number 2: Who in the hell smokes weed at a concert. My seat was all the way at the front, right next to the stage. Someone decided to light up one and puff away...not once, but twice.

    Janet Jackson

by fishbites on 7/3/10Louisiana Superdome - New Orleans

Janet was wonderful, just too many views of the audience, and larger screens are needed for those that were further away from the stage.

    Friday night was awesome!!!!!

by Expressions on 7/3/10Louisiana Superdome - New Orleans

The Essence Music Fest Friday night show was awesome. Monica was great with her tribute to Whitney Houston. Raphael Saadiq wonderful. He put on quite a show. Of course Uncle Charlie (Charlie Wilson) was off the hook. He sang and danced and did his thing. Then of course was Janet Jackson, she performed in usual fashion and stole the show. Her performance phenomenal!!!!
