Emperor is one of the most visceral, gut-wrenching and ambitious black metal bands of all time. While their 1992 demo album Wrath of the Tyrant garnered underground acclaim, their eponymous EP, 1993's Emperor, would become an all-time classic. Emperor's first full-length album, 1994's In the Nightside Eclipse, is one of the most influential black metal albums ever; it introduced the world to the band's brutal yet sophisticated instrumentation, wrathful vocals and symphonic terror.
In 1997, Emperor released their next groundbreaking album, Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk, and another EP, Reverence. Their third album, IX Equilibrium, was released in 1999 and saw the band transform into a trio. After the release of their fourth album, Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire & Demise (2001), Emperor disbanded until they'd reunite to record new material for the 2009 concert album Live Inferno.
Emperor was originally formed by guitarists Ihsahn and Samoth, who met at a youth music seminar as teens in their native Norway. The project began as an offshoot of a group they had formed called Thou Shalt Suffer. With the addition of bass player Mortiis, they created Emperor and began to work on their 1992 demo. When asked in a 2019 interview with LoudTV if they had any intention of releasing new music, Ihsahn stated, "We'd rather stop at the level where we were all creatively involved, rather than doing it for keeping the logo or for any of those reasons."
Emperor consists of guitarist-vocalist-songwriter Ihsahn (Vegard Sverre Tveitan), guitarist Samoth (Tomas Thormodsæter Haugen) and drummer Trym (Kai Johnny Mosaker). The band's 2023 tour -- their first in 15 years -- will take them across the United States, Romania, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.
The best metal show I've ever been to. The acoustics at the theater were fantastic.
Please book Emperor in the future again! They were amazing!
Fantastic performance by the mighty Emperor! The acoustics from the venue were just as great as the band playing. Made for an awesome night.
Excellent from the first song to the last song!! The venue was amazing! The acoustics were perfect! All n all for seeing them for the first time it was worth it and I look forward to seeing them again!!!
Emperor had a grand performance! The combination between their creative music plus the quality of the amazing surround sound, made for an trance experience. It appeared that they only get better with time. Wisdom and life experience have really done well for them. Everyone should experience their live performances.
I had been waiting to see Emperor since 2008. When they finally came back and did a tour through Psycho, I bought tickets for two back to back dates and they did not disappoint. They sounded just as good, if not better than they do on their albums. Their set was also extremely long and they played all of their best songs. Will definitely get tickets again for the next tour.
Emperor is one of the greatest black metal band of the world. Was an amazing show, the only thing that I didn’t like was the rules of the venue. I was in line for the meet and greet at 3.30pm, and they asked me to change my boots and my necklace since both has a lot of spikes. Hey dude? Is a black metal show! How can you ask me to to change my outfit! My husband was close and he went to pick up other boots and other necklace. I lived 15 mins away from the venue, but what about If I didn’t? Like a lot of guys came from other state? That wasn’t good.
The staff wasnt too bad, aside from complacency. But the show itself was great. Seeing Emperor in Texas after 24 years. I wish I got the older experience but this was amazing for sure. I get to go back for Dethklok.
Emperor is a fantastic band, but the old albums from the 90's suffer from poor production. Everything sounds too muffled and the guitars aren't loud enough (old black metal has this problem). I thought they would sound much better live, but I was wrong. The overall sound still was quite lame. The guitars still were not cutting through enough (for me) and the vocals could have been louder too. Also, there was some kind of annoying whooshing sound. I think it might have been the keyboards. The venue (Southside Ballroom in Dallas) is nothing special at all. It might be because it's just old and rather boring. It needs some type of upgrade to give it more character.
I have been listening to Emperor for over 20 years. This was in my adolescents. Always dreamt of the day they would tour the US. They finally made it and was everything I had ever imagined. Looking forward to the next time and will definitely go to Europe to see them at some point if I am able to have that opportunity!!! Simply the best Black Metal ever
Astounding. Given how rarely Emperor tours the US, I was lucky to see them. The live sound compared to the old albums recorded in the 90s is night and day (which I expected)
I enjoy going to Kings Theatre and the band put on a great show. Cant wait to be back there
Buying directly from Ticketmaster was the best option. Really easy and safe. Beat concert I have ever been.
One of the greatest shows I ever saw! Emperor killed it!
The seating chart showed no GA so the second row seats I paid for were useless. I would have to stand the entire time and maybe I'd see the top of the heads of the band while being packed like sardines. The seating chart was a totally sham for more money. $200 for tickets and I sat in the back. Shame
I got to the venue late because there was bad traffic on my route there. Check in was so fast that we actually made it in time for the opening song of the set. I'm so glad I made it out for Emperor. 16 years since they came to Chicago and I knew this may be my only chance to see them live. The entire set was gorgeous and flawless and despite our late arrival we found an excellent vantage point. Thank you, Emperor, and thanks to Aragon Ballroom for being an awesome venue❤️🤘
