About

EMMYLOU HARRIS IN CONCERT:

Throughout her long and storied career in country music, Emmylou Harris' unrestrainable voice has been an unfaltering source of inspiration. As a performer, Emmylou takes a personal tone with her fans, allowing them an intimate glimpse into her world with passionate renditions of classics like "Sweet Dreams" and "To Daddy." As she enters her fifth decade of performing, Emmylou is as radiant as ever, treating fans in 2014 to select dates on her Wrecking Ball Tour with Daniel Lanois.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Alabama-born singer-songwriter Emmylou Harris moved around the South as a child, eventually settling in to the '60s New York folk scene. Soon after, she met the legendary Graham Parsons of the Flying Burrito Brothers, who would become her country mentor. Their collaboration under his tutelage resulted in her major label solo debut Pieces of the Sky, a masterpiece that propelled her to fame. In the ensuing years, she has worked as a solo artist, a backing vocalist, and a duet partner for some of the biggest names in music. Over the course of her decade-spanning career, she has released 26 studio albums and won 13 Grammys.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

" Emmylou started the show by herself and never left the stage 'til the very end. Her voice is beautiful, and her stage presence charming."

"This latest performance was as outstanding as ever. Her continued enthusiasm for her music and energy was inspirational."

"The best of the best. Great song selection. Excellent Band. Should be required viewing for today's aspiring musicians."

SF Chronicle review: guy sleeping in the chair...

by dough on 7/10/09Oaks Park - Portland

First, I love Emmylou Harris, have followed her since she recorded with GP and have seen her four times in the last five years. All brilliant shows, one with Buddy at the Portland Theater (do I have to call it the Schnitz? ughhhhhhh). I also really like Shawn Colvin and Patti Griffin's music but have never seen either one live. All three great singers and songwriters and musicians. Plus Buddy Miller, a great singer / songwriter in his own right and a gifted guitarist to boot. How could it go wrong? Perhaps the Oaks Park venue was all wrong... or maybe music at the zoo has spoiled me where you can bring food in, no problem. Nothing on the tickets told me not to bring food to Oaks Park... so, long story short, we scarfed our food and snacks at a picnic table, left the unconsumed bundled up on the table and were then among the last ones to get in. But hey, I was still pumped to hear some magic and music come to life even though we sat at least a quarter mile away from the stage. Even though the sound sucked, plain and simple, for anyone that was beyond the immediate stage area. But still, the magic, the music will save the day. Didn't happen. At least it didn't happen within the first sixty minutes. It was pretty much Shawn sings one of her songs, Emmylou sings one of hers, Patti sings one of her's then Buddy sings one of his. There was some strumming of guitars and shaking of shakers but somehow the potential for the four great voices to blend into something special just didn't happen. It fell flat... perhaps road weary? Or the bad sound...or the venue...or a combination. Don't know, but... but I will still buy tickets to see them individually in the future.

    Low energy - new faces

by shanteach on 7/5/09Oaks Park - Portland

Three Girls and Their Buddy was a new experience for me. I knew each artist, except Patti Griffith, and was maybe expecting something different. They were very low energy. I was expecting a vibe that was fun, not wild, the invited dancing at points. Not so! Shawn Colvin barely spoke the entire show, and even seemed like she didn't really want to be there.

    3 Girls too many

by gotgopher on 7/3/09Oaks Park - Portland

Oaks Park certainly made for an intimate setting on a beautiful evening. All four performers were entertaining, sharing bits and pieces of themselves as preludes to their songs. All in all though, I found the material overall to be disappointing. I didn't hope to hear a collection of greatest hits, but much of the material I found to be lackluster, personal to the performers certainly, but literally causing me to yawn. Halfway into the concert both my wife and I were inwardly imploring them to pick it up. On a beautiful evening such as it was, the audience was never inspired to their feet until the last couple of songs. I've seen Emmy Lou many times, and over the last 15 years, each performance has been less spirited than the last. I respect her courage to go her own way, and experiment with different styles, and sounds, but onstage live her choice of material needs to play a little more to the crowd, and give the audience a little more of the treasures she's stored away, apparently forever. Buddy Miller's guitar was essential to the group, and his lead vocals were wonderful, his harmonies typically subdued, and providing a great complement to the others' material. "Chalk" was the perfect plug for his most recent collaboration with Julie. He left me wanting more. Patty Griffin had some great moments - "Love Throw A Line", and "Heavenly Day" in particular, and a couple of other songs I hadn't heard her before. But Patty and Buddy seemed to be a bit dragged down by the musical mood of the evening. On a scale of 1 to 10 this show was about a 4.

3 Girls and their Buddy was wonderful

by Tootie on 7/2/09Oaks Park - Portland

What a great trio of gals to sing together and a beautiful aetting. I was dismayed when only a handful of people stood at the end to clap and ask for an encore. Don't Portlanders have any soul, grace or consideration?

3 Girls and Buddy, each Star Shined !

    by EmmyLou0052 on 7/2/09Oaks Park - Portland

A sit down in a chair , "comfy" concert, with : Patty Griffin, EmmyLou Harris, Buddy Miller and Shawn Colvin, ( in that order), on stage. Each artist / singer shined in their own style, singing in turn, one of their selected songs . The others supported as needed, with harmony vocals, shaker, tamborine, small bongo, and of course Buddy Miller's guitar, and "electric mando". It was informal, and as easy going as Buddy Miller himself. Small talk and laid back enjoyment... as a singer leaned back, closed their eyes, and listened to one another's talent. It was magical to sit up in front and watch them all interact so easily and comfortably. Like the old friend that they are. Harmonies were tight, songs beautiful, or full of spunk. All accoustic , with a subtle touch by Buddy to amp it up just enough. You could hear every voice and harmony perfectly. It was about as good as it gets for harmony lovers like me. They had a good time, we had a good time With each Artist feelling rather humble about their guitar abilities and their new albums out on the market., Emmy Lou stepped up to the plate and gave a pitch for Shawn, Buddy, and Patty's, new albums, And, the up- coming new album of Patty Griffin's. ..(.with ALL of these top notch singers in on it., and Buddy Miller Producing it !) i believe Patty said it was recorded in a church? Can't wait to hear it ! .Many great songs, four different awesome styles, . A wonderful mix of four very talented people.

Three Girls and their Buddy were awesome

by mama on 7/2/09Oaks Park - Portland

This concert was excellent. All 4 of the performers have good voices, and when they sang together their voices blended well. I liked the venue of Oaks Park. The Aladdin Theater always does a good job.

    Underwhelmed

by Chook on 7/2/09Oaks Park - Portland

The setting was perfect, the beer was cold, the sun was out. The music? Well, except for Patti and Buddy, it was pretty bland. And then the beer line was too long and the food lines were too long. At least the weather was nice.

    Not so much....

by Mercy on 7/1/09Oaks Park - Portland

I bought tickets for a friend and I to see three girls and their buddy. Although I really enjoyed hearing Buddy Miller's songs, I was disappointed in the group's overall performance. I don't know....maybe these guys were tired, (I think Portland was the last leg of a long tour)... I listen to alot of local musicians for very little money. I guess these three girls just didn't meet up to my expectations. Perhaps I'll be more selective in the future before I plunk down 40 bucks a ticket.....especially in this economy.

Hurray, Patty, Emmy Lou and Shawn!

by jafell on 7/1/09Oaks Park - Portland

This was a great night. The venue is very sweet, on the river with plenty of shade. It was a very low key concert., Just four friends sitting around swapping tunes. I'm happy because Patty Griffin played my favorites. She was just outstanding, and has a much greater emotional range to her music than either Emmy or Shawn. The surprize was Buddy Miller. Lots of folks were there that know his music, and the contributions he's made to many careers. I was not one of them. Now I'm hungry for more. His male energy certainly kept the three girl thing from getting too smaltzy.

    Three girls and their buddy

    by Skyking7777 on 7/1/09Oaks Park - Portland

I went primarily to see Shawn Colvin and was dissapointed that she did not play more of her main hits. The other performers were pretty good but nothing exceptional. While I would not go to see it again and would not recommend it to others, it was an ejoyable few hours. The venue (Oaks Park) was totally unprepared when it came to beer and wine sales. I spent nearly half an hour in line for a beer. Other than the beer line, Oaks Park was pretty good.

Three Girls are not better than One

by Verma on 7/1/09Oaks Park - Portland

I'm a huge Patty Griffin fan, and I really like Emmy Lou. I had hoped for more songs performed together. Instead, the four performers took turns, each more or less performing separately. They started on time and played for only 2 hours. The venue was great except for one major issue: no food or beverage was allowed inside. This was a huge surprise and disappointment for many people who'd packed picnics for the show in a public park.

    Three Girls and Their Buddy

by hulagirl on 7/1/09Oaks Park - Portland

The evening was beautiful the venue and staff were perfect. The three girls and their buddy were wonderful! I would get so lost in their music and banter that I would forget there were probably over 3000 people there. It felt like we were just sitting in a park while they picked and sang. I hope they come back and that Oaks Park books more acts like them.

    Stage Synergy!!!

by Calvin on 7/1/09Oaks Park - Portland

This was my first time hearing any of these musicians live, and it was a show I will not forget! As a musician myself I was blown away by the talent and energy. My favorites were Patty Griffin and Buddy Miller, but Shawn Colvin and Emmylou were great as well. The venue was intimate, relaxed and the weather was perfect. Please bring these guys back soon!

    3 Girls & their Buddy

by Maureen on 7/1/09Oaks Park - Portland

The show was wonderful. New love for Patti's voice. The evening was beautiful so close to the river. Really love the venue. I am familiar with the outdoor event regulations in Portland, but so many people were not. There was no clear information online about food, water and cameras. There was a lot of food dumped in the trash at the gate. What a waste. Only sealed by the factory water bottles allowed. Food at the event was pizza, burgers and burritos. The bathrooms were nice and adequate. The alcohol lines were so long (4-6 songs worth) that it wasn't really worth the wait. This was an older age group. Also, should have someone directing cars out of the parking lot. It was a cluster of vehicles cramming thru the gate. I loved the show and would love to see more shows at Oaks Park.

My first time seeing Buddy & Patti. Patti can belt it out with the best of them. I'm searching for a good CD of hers as we speak. Shawn & Emmie were as wonderful as ever. I could have listened for a few more hours.

    Four Star Group

by PattyFan on 7/1/09Oaks Park - Portland

When purchased this ticket I didn't know much about the event... I was going because I knew Patty Griffin was playing, and because of the promotional photo Emmylou Harris would be there too, who I love. It was a treat to arrive and discover Sean Colvin and Buddy Miller were along for the ride as well. It was wonderful... four amazing artists taking turns singing their songs, backing oneanother up, collaborating and improvising... SO GREAT! The song selection was fabulous... amazing artistry and talent... good sound system (not too loud)... the weather was perfect. Drawback: Oakspark doesn't allow you to bring your own food or drink. BOO!!! People were having to throw stuff away right and left... then you got inside and they charged you two dollars for water. I hope those artists don't choose that venue again, only for that reason. Otherwise it's a great place... right on the water. How do we vote to change that rule? Ha.
