About

Elvis Costello is a writer and part-time musician who made a number of records in the 20th Century, some of which are still remembered today.

He was born in London and raised there and in Liverpool.

Costello is the composer or lyricist of over six hundred published titles, including fifteen songs co-written with Paul McCartney and renowned collaborations with Allen Toussaint, the Brodsky Quartet and T Bone Burnett.

Costello's songwriting alliance with Burt Bacharach, began in 1995 with the song, "God Give Me Strength", which led to the 1998 album, "Painted From Memory", before their work was collected in 2023, on the four-album set, "The Songs Of Bacharach & Costello".

Elvis Costello songs have been recorded by Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Chet Baker, Dusty Springfield, Solomon Burke, George Jones, Linda Ronstadt and Bjork, while among the artists with whom he has written songs are Loretta Lynn, Carole King, Rosanne Cash and Kris Kristofferson and his wife, Diana Krall.

Working purely as a lyricist, Costello has provided words for the music of Billy Strayhorn, Oscar Peterson and for twelve Charles Mingus compositions and as a composer, set twelve unpublished lyrics by Bob Dylan.

2024 will see the opening of "A Face In The Crowd", Sarah Ruhl's stage adaptation of the Budd Schulberg story for which Elvis Costello composed the songs.

"A Face In The Crowd" will open at the Young Vic in London on INSERT DATE, directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah and produced by Adam Kenwright.

Elvis Costello is the author of "Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink", a more than six-hundred page memoir which has been translated into six languages. He has received a range of awards over his 45 year old career of which the induction into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame is probably the most significant.

Although he holds two honorary doctorates in music - one from the University of Liverpool and another from the New England Conservatory- Elvis Costello is known for playing the guitar with almost no regard for common sense.

Costello currently performs with The Imposters; his long time companions, drummer, Pete Thomas and pianist, Steve Nieve, bassist of twenty-three years standing, Davey Faragher and their special guest, Texas guitarist, Charlie Sexton.

  • Elvis saved my life!

by orthobiz on 11/2/16Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 4 out of 5

Back in the late 70's early 80's I lived and breathed Elvis. This concert drew almost exclusively from 77 to 82 and I knew every lick, every note. Steve on keyboards is fantastic and Elvis makes a big point of giving him credit throughout the show. Venue always good (Michigan Theater), seats a bit pricey for the balcony but at least I did not have to buy them on the secondary market. Probably the 12th time I've seen him, his voice and hair are getting thin but he's still a fantastic showman.

  • well worth the price of admission

by hailwood on 11/2/16Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

Two and a half hours of fun. Changed things up through out the set. Nice encore. He's having fun up there, so we are having fun in the audience. If you get a chance to see him in a smaller venue, don't miss this show...I am a much bigger fan after seeing this show..

  • Elvis was great. Sound sucked

    by Mackey2 on 11/2/16Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 3 out of 5

Elvis and band were great. Sound mix was poor at best. Steve Nieve's keyboards mostly inaudible. Elvis's guitar also often buried. Just a wall of sound with no details. Michigan Theatre - get a new sound man that understands when a guitar player is at the front of the stage doing something for a long time - it would be nice for the audience to hear it.

  • Elvis Costello did NOT Disappoint!!!

by LinnyV on 11/2/16The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

We saw Elvis Costello at the Chicago Theatre for my Husdands birthday. HE performed 2 hours and 45 minutes, and he never left the stage! Sounded amazing, he engaged with the crowd who adored him. WE have always wanted to see him, and the combination of the Chicago Theatre and seeing Elvis, made it the perfect evening. THe guy is 100 % class act!

  • great band, terrible sound

by smashface on 11/2/16Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 3 out of 5

very muddy sound mix, hard to hear the individual players

  • Hmmm.....disappointing

    by CarlF9 on 11/2/16Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 2 out of 5

Unless the acoustics were playing tricks on me, or Elvis was singing sloppily and off-key much of the night. At times I was squirming in my seat like I was at a high school talent show. But his five or six top hits were enjoyable (Detectives, Alison, Pump It Up, etc.) and well done.

  • Not a Great Night for Elvis

by pocampo on 11/2/16Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 2 out of 5

Elvis was flat and behind the band for much of the concert. Don't know whether he couldn't hear in this venue or he was just having an off night. Surprised that so many of his fans jumped up to give him a standing ovation after many songs that were just way off key. I guess that's loyalty....

  • Elvis Costello was a class act!

This show was fantastic! They sounded great and were really entertaining!

  • A master at work!

by mucha on 11/1/16Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 5 out of 5

Elvis always impresses, never disappoints. Played almost 2 1/2 hours where bands half his age can barely play an hour. The Imperial Bedroom is my favorite album of his. Such a treat to hear it played live. Awesome show = you need to go! Miss him not!

  • Very enjoyable for a superfan like me!

by Nancy531 on 11/1/16The Palace Theatre Albany - AlbanyRating: 5 out of 5

It took me a minute of watching the drawings shown on the projector that the show was going to center around the album Imperial Bedroom. For me this was a delight because I spent many hours listening to every album over and over when I was young. I loved the staging with the drawn album covers and the lighting and background singers. It was a real rock show but felt intimate at the same time. I loved the explanations and the re-arrangement of the songs from the album. There was also an impromptu version of "Less than Zero" after a request from the crowd and the concert finished with a rock out of several hits from other albums. Great night for me. The couple seated next to us was not enjoying the sound system or the choices of songs but I loved it and so did my family.

  • Elvis Costello- awful sound

by glambassist on 11/1/16The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

Went to see Elvis Costello for the first time and was so disappointed in the sound. It seemed like the sound guy was asleep for 1/2 the show. The vocals were too low in the mix, when they were finally fixed, then the bass would cut out, I was never able to hear the guitar. With such a big room, and a high priced ticket item, I was expecting to be able to actually hear and enjoy the show. When I was walking out I was overhearing a number of people complaining about the same thing.

  • Fire the soundman!

by avantgardner on 11/1/16The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

This was the 10th time I have seen Elvis over the years. I could barely make out his vocals, as it sounded as though he was singing through mashed potatoes. Steve Nieve was completely silent, although visually he was banging around as usual. All that could be heard was bass and drums, and a general swirl of midrange. So disappointing. Everyone was talking about it. Poor Elvis probably had no idea, but it was a painful 2.5 hours.

  • Costello's bad acoustics

by Sharonazz on 11/1/16The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

I thought the concert was boring and the acoustics were terrible

  • Great show! Horrible audio!

by DaddyBig on 11/1/16The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Elvis Costello continues to show why he continues to one of the most valid voices in music. Spanning decades and genres, his outlook on the world shines through his music. Accompanied by 2/3 of the original Attractions, a great new bassist and 2 outstanding backup singers, he took the audience through an incredible assortment of his canon. - But - The audio at the Chicago Theatre was muddy at best, painful at worst. It was as if the entire show was being squeezed through the speaker of a 1979 AMC Pacer. This is the sort of sound you put up with when you attend an arena concert at United Center or the Allstate, not the venerable Chicago Theatre. Helen Keller would have done a better job of the soundcheck. This was intolerable.

  • EC & The Imposters Rocked Akron Civic Theatre

    by BRUTUS1 on 11/1/16Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 5 out of 5

Elvis Costello never disappoints his audience & is always worth $ the cost of a live performance. He is definitely one of the best guitar players & overal musicians still touring. This is the 4th time I have seen him perform & his show is always fresh because he continues to write & sing meaningful songs. Would never miss an opportunity to attend his show as his music appeals to all age groups as was evident on this night.

  • Elvis was great, Chicago Theater sound was terribl

    by kem131313 on 11/1/16The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 4 out of 5

Elvis Costello did a fabulous job of keeping his music current and fun to listen to. The Chicago Theater sound system was hollow and made it hard to hear the words of the singer. Would recommend Elvis Costello but not Chicago Theater. He should not play there any more if that is the best the sound is.

  • It could have been wonderful

by chefjms on 11/1/16The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 1 out of 5

My wife and I were excited, to say the least, to see Elvis with the Imposters once again. I bought tickets in the Loge ($153 each plus fees) so that we'd have an unobstructed view. The tickets were a birthday gift for my wife. The seats were great, but that was about all I can say about this show. I've been going to rock concerts in every imaginable venue since 1969. I can say, without hesitation, that the sound at this show was the worst I've ever experienced. I saw the punk band Metz do an in-store at Permanent records a few years ago, and the sound was better. My wife, along with a number of others complained, and, not surprisingly, their complaints were readily acknowledged but nothing changed. I couldn't say if this was a phenomenon that was isolated to the log and balcony, but I can't imagine that it was that great on the main floor, except for the folks up front who could probably hear the monitors. I read the concert review in the Tribune, which was the only way I found out exactly what songs I missed because I couldn't hear the vocals. The last paragraph of the review mentioned the crappy sound. Let's face facts, Elvis Costello writes great lyrics, along with engaging melodies, and that is why we're long time fans. Not being able to hear the vocals ruined what should have been a wonderful evening.

  • Elvis Costello and the Impostors

    by July56 on 11/1/16The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

I love the Chicago Theatre, but at this show the sound quality was horrible. The reverb was so bad you could not understand any of the lyrics unless it was an acoustic version. I have seen Elvis Costello a few times prior to this show and the shows were fabulous. This show, because of the sound quality, was just marginal.

  • Disappointing show

by Golferandy on 11/1/16The Chicago Theatre - ChicagoRating: 2 out of 5

This was my 1st chance to see Elvis Costello live. He chose to perform mostly obscure songs. And the few popular songs that he played were rearranged unfavorably. On top of all of this, the sound mix was bad. Elvis's words were muddled and drowned out by the rest of sound mix. Sound at Chicago Theatre is usually outstanding. Not sure what was going on.

  • Elvis Costello was a Big Disappointment!

    by Billy62 on 10/31/16Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 1 out of 5

Elvis still has his voice but kept singing off the music. Once would have been artistic. Every song made it annoying. I would estimate I've been to somewhere around 1500 concerts and this is only the second time I left a show early because it was so bad. I assume he's been doing this at other concerts and that's why about half the seats were empty. I felt like I should have gotten my money back. What a HUGE disappointment.
