Elvis Costello is a writer and part-time musician who made a number of records in the 20th Century, some of which are still remembered today.
He was born in London and raised there and in Liverpool.
Costello is the composer or lyricist of over six hundred published titles, including fifteen songs co-written with Paul McCartney and renowned collaborations with Allen Toussaint, the Brodsky Quartet and T Bone Burnett.
Costello's songwriting alliance with Burt Bacharach, began in 1995 with the song, "God Give Me Strength", which led to the 1998 album, "Painted From Memory", before their work was collected in 2023, on the four-album set, "The Songs Of Bacharach & Costello".
Elvis Costello songs have been recorded by Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Chet Baker, Dusty Springfield, Solomon Burke, George Jones, Linda Ronstadt and Bjork, while among the artists with whom he has written songs are Loretta Lynn, Carole King, Rosanne Cash and Kris Kristofferson and his wife, Diana Krall.
Working purely as a lyricist, Costello has provided words for the music of Billy Strayhorn, Oscar Peterson and for twelve Charles Mingus compositions and as a composer, set twelve unpublished lyrics by Bob Dylan.
2024 will see the opening of "A Face In The Crowd", Sarah Ruhl's stage adaptation of the Budd Schulberg story for which Elvis Costello composed the songs.
"A Face In The Crowd" will open at the Young Vic in London on INSERT DATE, directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah and produced by Adam Kenwright.
Elvis Costello is the author of "Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink", a more than six-hundred page memoir which has been translated into six languages. He has received a range of awards over his 45 year old career of which the induction into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame is probably the most significant.
Although he holds two honorary doctorates in music - one from the University of Liverpool and another from the New England Conservatory- Elvis Costello is known for playing the guitar with almost no regard for common sense.
Costello currently performs with The Imposters; his long time companions, drummer, Pete Thomas and pianist, Steve Nieve, bassist of twenty-three years standing, Davey Faragher and their special guest, Texas guitarist, Charlie Sexton.

We enjoyed Blondie and were thankful we only paid twenty dollars for these tickets. The sound, content and music of Elvis Costello sounded horrible. Very dissappointed and it was a terrible show. We left after the fifth song of Elvis. It was terrible.
Blondie rocked, as did Elvis. We were delayed getting into the pavilion due to weather, but both bands really rocked it out. They played what they should have to make their fans happy and they didn't disappoint. Crowd energy was great. First gig of the tour, and you'd never have known it.
Beautiful facility; wonderful music; cooperative weather; reasonable traffic; met ol friends; tried a new brand of beer "Modello, " a Mexican beer?; and danced danced danced... great fun!
Great show! Great venue! Fifty characters............
DAR Constitution Hall is like a public auditorium. There's no nearby parking and it's not walkable to any restaurants. They had 4 bars set up to make drinks but they were all cash only. They only have 1 small ATM machine and it was Out Of Service. I asked a Manager if there was a way that they could get the ATM machine back in service and she responded with: "Oh that machine is still offline? It's been since yesterday... (FAIL) That is not my machine... (FAIL) I don't know how to reboot that thing but there might be a number I can call (FAIL why didn't you do that yesterday fool)". How do people get jobs and keep jobs when they seem to fail at their job or simply not know how to do their job? Also the lighting in the arena is corny. The sound system is too loud in front so that it will be loud enough in the back - if you're in the closest half towards the stage it vibrates over you and doesn't sound great. The performance by Elvis Costello was okay. We understand he's older and his voice isn't as strong or quick as it once was. However his lineup was very heavy on slower newer ballads which, frankly, all sound alike. He did pepper in some up-tempo classic hits which pleased the crowd. If he had peppered them in more frequently throughout like every 3rd song it might have held the crowd's attention better. His first finale was pretty early, and they came back for an encore. The encore turned out to be like a second set, which was confusing. He played like 6 songs ending each song as if it was the end of the show. People were getting up and leaving, and then he'd play another song and we'd return to our seats. Then that song would have a BIG finish, followed by the lights going dark. Then we'd all like kind of start leaving again. Then the lights are back up and here's the next song.... what the heck? And that finale set included several weird self-indulgent slow ballads/deep tracks that had people wanting to leave. And then all of a sudden "What's so funny about peace love and understanding?" A huge hit but most of the audience had already left and missed it. LOL Elvis!
The cameras were unmanned so the images on the screens next to the stage were still from as far away as possible. Elvis was very good with a mix of old and new.
We recently saw Elvis Costello at the Hard Rock Casino in AC, NJ. The arena was easy to navigate in and find our seats. It is not so huge that you would not be able to see anything from the back. We sat in Row R, which are elevated seats, and had a clear view of the stage. Being 5'3" tall, this is always an issue for me. The sound was OK but not great. Not sure if there would be a difference if you sat in the chairs on the floor up front. Elvis and his band played straight through for about 2 hours without a break and came out for an encore. They played new songs in the first half of the show and old hits in the second half and for the encore. They really rocked it. They were all great, from Elvis on the guitar to his two back up singers. The keyboard player was fantastic. I enjoyed watching him.
I was extremely disappointed in this concert. The sound was average at best and the band with the exception of the back up singers seemed un-engaged and the set list was disappointing
The sound was off, too much base. I rarely head the lead guitar. When Elvis played and sang solo, it sounded good.
He played mostly the new album and barely any of his classics and the few that he did were so slow it was annoying. When you go to see a legend you want to be wowed, this was a sleeper, wish we would have stayed home and played his CD.
The security line was SO long, we missed the first 5 songs of the concert. Great concert, BTW!! Sorry to have missed so much of it though--
Elvis went to the way back machine and dug deep! Lipstick Vogue,Welcome to the Working Week and Don't want to go to Chelsea among others! Fantastic!!!
I bought tickets to this show for my mom. Elvis Costello isn't someone I listen to regularly but I like his music. The show ended up being one of the best shows I have seen! I really enjoyed his line up. He played new, classic, slow, and upbeat songs. Really cool background pictures from a projector throughout the concert. Heard my first ever piano solo!! He played for approximately 2 hours with no breaks so it was also one of the longer shows I have been to. Not 5 stars only because it wasn't my #1 show but a close #2. A must see for sure!
The sound was not good. I know concerts are loud, but the loud points were distorted.
Elvis put on an amazing show! Last time we saw him was solo & acoustic-very intimate. To see him with his band & awesome back up singers, wired for sound was another great experience, the second hour of the show had everyone up on their feet dancing where they stood! Great energy & feel good atmosphere. He puts on a hell of a show!
Elvis and band gave an energetic and masterful performance. The pacing was perfect and yhey music went on for a full 2 hpurs. What great, versatile and creative rockers!
First got into Elvis with Radio, Radio - friends thought I was nuts. Followed him since then - amazingly diverse artist and he put on a great show
Imperial Bedroom is one of my favorite albums. I was so happy to hear these song in concert. Many for the first time. I really enjoyed this show.
Every concert I've ever been to, and there have been many, it seems like there's some song I wanted to hear, but they didn't play. Like Dave Matthews, you didn't play "Crash Into Me", really? But Elvis played nearly 3 hours, with barely a break except to interject some humorous tidbit like calling Imperial Bedroom "the feel-good album of the summer of '82". We had great seats and the VIP was worth the extra $30 a ticket just to be able to run to the bathroom and grab a beer without any queues. No guys backing him up to hit the high notes, he can still hit them all, and he did all the guitar besides the bass player. The pianist was amazing, the girl back-up singers weren't distracting.
