About

Elvis Costello is a writer and part-time musician who made a number of records in the 20th Century, some of which are still remembered today.

He was born in London and raised there and in Liverpool.

Costello is the composer or lyricist of over six hundred published titles, including fifteen songs co-written with Paul McCartney and renowned collaborations with Allen Toussaint, the Brodsky Quartet and T Bone Burnett.

Costello's songwriting alliance with Burt Bacharach, began in 1995 with the song, "God Give Me Strength", which led to the 1998 album, "Painted From Memory", before their work was collected in 2023, on the four-album set, "The Songs Of Bacharach & Costello".

Elvis Costello songs have been recorded by Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Chet Baker, Dusty Springfield, Solomon Burke, George Jones, Linda Ronstadt and Bjork, while among the artists with whom he has written songs are Loretta Lynn, Carole King, Rosanne Cash and Kris Kristofferson and his wife, Diana Krall.

Working purely as a lyricist, Costello has provided words for the music of Billy Strayhorn, Oscar Peterson and for twelve Charles Mingus compositions and as a composer, set twelve unpublished lyrics by Bob Dylan.

2024 will see the opening of "A Face In The Crowd", Sarah Ruhl's stage adaptation of the Budd Schulberg story for which Elvis Costello composed the songs.

"A Face In The Crowd" will open at the Young Vic in London on INSERT DATE, directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah and produced by Adam Kenwright.

Elvis Costello is the author of "Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink", a more than six-hundred page memoir which has been translated into six languages. He has received a range of awards over his 45 year old career of which the induction into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame is probably the most significant.

Although he holds two honorary doctorates in music - one from the University of Liverpool and another from the New England Conservatory- Elvis Costello is known for playing the guitar with almost no regard for common sense.

Costello currently performs with The Imposters; his long time companions, drummer, Pete Thomas and pianist, Steve Nieve, bassist of twenty-three years standing, Davey Faragher and their special guest, Texas guitarist, Charlie Sexton.

  • Difficult sound system

by Tracy on 10/27/19Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 3 out of 5

I was really excited to see Elvis Costello. Huge fan. I paid a pretty penny for orchestra seats. I was disappointed in the sound system. I could not understand the lyrics despite knowing his music. The instruments overshadowed the mic. Overall I am glad to have attended just to hear Elvis costello, but there should be a soundcheck at this venue to make sure everything is as it should be for the fans

  • Good

Good time. Vocals were hard to hear . Beautiful venue. Great staff.

  • Elvis Made Me Leave The Building

by Scott Downs on 10/27/19Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 1 out of 5

I was very excited to see Elvis Costello at the Hershey Theater, a terrific venue where I’ve enjoyed many shows. During the first song, it became apparent whoever was running the soundboard was lousy, as Elvis’ vocals were muddy, to the point of being indiscernible. By the third song, it was evident that the audio mix that night wouldn’t improve. It was compounded by the fact that Elvis’ song selection was godawful. The audience was subjected to what basically sounded like funeral dirges for the first hour, at which point, I left the show (which I’ve only done twice in 50 years). Such a bummer - Elvis Costello is tremendously talented, and has a wonderful catalogue of songs. Guess I’ll just stick to his records from now on.

  • It was great!

by Susie on 10/27/19Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

Elvis Costello did not disappoint! He really delivered with his Singing & Performance!! Loved it! I didn’t get to see him in his early days, So I was very happy to be able to see him perform in person now and at such a great venue! And the bonus was I got to see him with my 28 year old son, he is a fan now!

  • Elvis Costello and the Imposters are always top notch.

    by B. F. on 10/27/19Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

Elvis and the band are always top notch performers. Elvis shares all of his music talent and the bands. Worth every dollar. Hershey Theater is also a great place for a show.

  • Very good singer and musician

by Sharon on 10/27/19Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

Elvis Costello is one of my husband's favorite performers and I now agree with him after this concert. His band and backup singers are top notch as well. Hershey Theatre is a good venue for concerts and shows and our loge seats were perfect. However, the vocals were not always as clear as they should have been. We certainly enjoyed this concert but there was room for imrovement in the vocals.

  • One of the G.O.A.T.S of music

by Bebee on 10/27/19Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

Elvis just seems to get better with age! The range of his voice and the talent with those guitars!! You can't go wrong attending a concert of his! Just wish more people would have danced in the aisles!! How can you sit still with that soulful music playing live???!!

  • Elvis did not play some of his best songs

by Phil on 10/27/19Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 2 out of 5

Elvis Costello is a great talent and I am a huge fan. We were very disappointed that he did no play Radio, Radio, Angels want to wear my red shoes and Olivers Army.

  • Calling Elvis

by Troegsfan on 10/27/19Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

We attended the Elvis Costello show at the Hershey Theatre on Oct. 24th. He was personable and delivered an awesome performance. He does however, need to hire a new sound man. Elvis' mic was not balanced with the rest of the band and he was drowned out most of the evening, mostly by the excessive volume of the drums. The backup singers were fantastic (when you could hear them). Again, an issue with the sound san. The Hershey Theatre needs to rethink their beverage service as we waited in line for nearly 25 minutes for a bottle of water. They should have two separate stands; one for alcohol, and one for non. Or add vending machines for water and soft drinks.

  • Great show, poor sound mix

by Brute on 10/27/19Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 4 out of 5

The band sounded great but the sound mix on Costellos mike was poor; very hard to heard a lot of his singing. Great set list

  • I think the sound was wonky

    by D. M. on 10/27/19Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 3 out of 5

When he switched to the mic behind the piano we finally could hear his beautiful voice...but that’s a long time to wait. Great show but at times definitely hard to hear.

  • Elvis (C.) is still the king!

by MWG on 8/31/19FivePoint Amphitheatre - IrvineRating: 5 out of 5

Elvis Costello is still amazing - fabulous musician and song writer! Thank you for playing all the old favorites, the classics and some new music as well. Loved the backup singers - such great voices and energy. Also, loved seeing and hearing Blondie. I went to this concert with my 24-yo daughter and felt like I was sharing some of my 20-something experience with her. The venue was also good, easy parking and every seat seemed like a good seat because no one's view was obstructed.

  • Both Blondie and Elvis were great!!

by Liz on 8/21/19Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Their performances were great. Just bummed that people just sit around just watching. Hello, this is a concert, get up and dance!!

  • New Night of Old New Wave Bands

by Steve on 8/17/19Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Great show! The concert started before the sun had dropped with Debbie Harry and Blondie pulling opening duties for the night. The band ran through a series of hits and some deeper cuts from their past, and they sounded terrific. Ms. Harry managed a couple of shiny costume changes and the original and newer band members all had a chance to shine during the set. Elvis came out next, while I was standing in the refreshments line, so I had to lightly pogo along to "Pump It Up" while I waited for our beer and wine. The set was a bit of a redemption show for me - I saw him a few years ago at the Hollywood Bowl with an orchestra, which basically slowed the entire show down, as they did a lot of his more orchestral numbers or slowed down faster songs to add the orchestra, etc. This time around it was Elvis, backed by the extremely tight The Imposters, and they rocked! Some amazing deep cuts ("Episode of Blonde" and "Green Shirt" were personal faves), songs from their new release ("Look Now") that got me excited to check it out, and a ton of classic Elvis tunes. I was also struck by his crowd work - that's one funny storyteller, right there. Overall, another amazing night at The Greek!

  • dancing the night away

    by M. M. on 8/14/19Concord Pavilion - ConcordRating: 5 out of 5

fantastic set by Elvis, great dance music by Blondie!

  • Bands great, sound poor

by the.g on 8/14/19Rockland Trust Bank Pavilion - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

Both Blondie and Elvis and bands played very well but the sound was some of the worst I have ever heard at the tent. Blondie was muddy especially vocally and Elvis was inconsistently pitchy which again reeked of a bad mix. I don't think I have ever experienced bad sound at this venue.

  • Blondie killed it. Elvis was ok too.

    by J. C. on 8/13/19Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Blondie was phenomenal. Was pleasantly surprised to find that her beautiful voice has lasted this long. Elvis didn't need the increased volume for the music he was playing.

  • Loved Blondie! Elvis was pretty good too!

    by Colleen94597 on 8/13/19Concord Pavilion - ConcordRating: 3 out of 5

Blondie sounded great after all of these years. First time hearing her live and I'm so glad I made the show. Elvis Costello was pretty good, but all of the instrumental jams got a little boring for me. Overall a good night to see a show.

  • They were both awesome

by LJ on 8/13/19Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

They both sang a long time & covered their greatest songs

  • Sad food options

by Susie on 8/13/19Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 4 out of 5

We were with friends and none of us were happy with the food options. We all opted out. There was little for vegetarians.
