About

Elvis Costello is a writer and part-time musician who made a number of records in the 20th Century, some of which are still remembered today.

He was born in London and raised there and in Liverpool.

Costello is the composer or lyricist of over six hundred published titles, including fifteen songs co-written with Paul McCartney and renowned collaborations with Allen Toussaint, the Brodsky Quartet and T Bone Burnett.

Costello's songwriting alliance with Burt Bacharach, began in 1995 with the song, "God Give Me Strength", which led to the 1998 album, "Painted From Memory", before their work was collected in 2023, on the four-album set, "The Songs Of Bacharach & Costello".

Elvis Costello songs have been recorded by Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Chet Baker, Dusty Springfield, Solomon Burke, George Jones, Linda Ronstadt and Bjork, while among the artists with whom he has written songs are Loretta Lynn, Carole King, Rosanne Cash and Kris Kristofferson and his wife, Diana Krall.

Working purely as a lyricist, Costello has provided words for the music of Billy Strayhorn, Oscar Peterson and for twelve Charles Mingus compositions and as a composer, set twelve unpublished lyrics by Bob Dylan.

2024 will see the opening of "A Face In The Crowd", Sarah Ruhl's stage adaptation of the Budd Schulberg story for which Elvis Costello composed the songs.

"A Face In The Crowd" will open at the Young Vic in London on INSERT DATE, directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah and produced by Adam Kenwright.

Elvis Costello is the author of "Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink", a more than six-hundred page memoir which has been translated into six languages. He has received a range of awards over his 45 year old career of which the induction into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame is probably the most significant.

Although he holds two honorary doctorates in music - one from the University of Liverpool and another from the New England Conservatory- Elvis Costello is known for playing the guitar with almost no regard for common sense.

Costello currently performs with The Imposters; his long time companions, drummer, Pete Thomas and pianist, Steve Nieve, bassist of twenty-three years standing, Davey Faragher and their special guest, Texas guitarist, Charlie Sexton.

  • Out of sync

by GC on 10/3/25DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 3 out of 5

I've seen Elvis a number of times over the years, and I know he likes to mix things up, but.....my wife and I agreed that many of the re-arrangements of songs were not improvements or even made them more interesting. For the most part, I thought he took away the sparse/sharp aspects of those songs that were a big part of their charm (for me at least). There wasn't much 'space' in songs like Watching the Detectives, or Waiting for the End of the World......On top of that Elvis seemed to be struggling to sing in time with the rest of the band - they were NOT tight. The only exception was the part of the show where they went to the small drum kit and things got quieter - he was excellent for those songs. Also, was excited to see Charlie Sexton play, but he didn't get much to do really until the very end of the show. Oh well....maybe I'm too tough, but wanted to share my thoughts.

  • Not The Best Sound

by Williet4 on 10/3/25DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 3 out of 5

This was the third time I’ve seen Elvis in concert, admittedly spread over many years. The sound at his shows has never been great but I think this DPAC show was the worst. In the first handful of songs his vocals were mixed too low then there seemed to be some improvement. But often either the drums or keyboards were mixed too high. I did like the way the group moved around the stage to set a different tone for certain songs.

  • Pretty Okay

by Elvis Fan from Way Back on 10/3/25DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

I've been a big fan of Elvis since I first saw him in college. I love his energy and irreverent lyrics. The best part of this concert in my opinion was the acoustic set. I felt like Elvis was really comfortable with what he was doing, and it sounded GREAT. The hard part for me was listening to some of the older stuff. I get it - he's sung these songs thousands and thousands of times and gets tired of singing them the same way. But at times, he was so far past the beat I felt like yelling to the band to slow down so he could catch up. It was almost painful. Some sounded great - I heard the old Elvis coming out. That was fantastic! But others - I'm happy he played them, but wished that it could have been presented a little bit differently. I've seen this with other older dudes singing old songs from the 70s/80s - they feel like they have to embellish it - maybe to cover up that they can't quite hit a note like they did when they were 30, or something else they feel is "lacking"now. I say, DON'T DO IT!!! Just sing it. Remember - most of your fans aren't at every concert. They are NOT tired of the way something has been done over and over like you might be. We want to hear something closer to what we remember - not necessarily exactly the same, but with a similar vibe and energy. The band was awesome!!

  • Great performance, poor sound

by Mark on 10/2/25Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

An excellent performance by Elvis and his band was marred by poor-quality sound. After several barely recognizable songs, the sound gradually improved but never achieved a level much better than mediocre.

  • Not Great

by Anon on 10/2/25Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 2 out of 5

Long time Elvis Costello fan but the concert was not great. Firstly the sound was way off - I don't know if it was the venue or the musicians. I realize Elvis has been playing many of these songs for nearly 50 years and needs to change things up a bit - but it seemed that none of them were the original arrangement. It's not good when it takes you a minute to realize he is playing Watching the Detective. Last thing - I understand he is trying to create a more intimate atmosphere by positioning himself to the extreme left of the stage, and then calling in the other band members in close to him. But not good if you are seated on the left side of the venue right behind the (large tower) speakers hanging from the ceiling. He should realize that if he can't see 100s of people on the left then they can't see him. When we complained to the Warner staff they moved us o some empty seats in the middle - but that didn't help everyone else on the left. Still a huge fan of the albums!!

  • Fantastic concert, 5-star & -5-star for Ticketmaster

by Ticketmaster Blows on 10/2/25Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Love Elvis, he's as great as ever. There was nothing special Ticketmaster did wrong this time, I just try to avoid it as best as possible due to the company's standard MO of gouging customers to the max. I usually work with "Murder, Inc."a comparatively more ethical scalping enterprise committed to DEI. If anybody needs a hook up, I can put you in touch with the firm's top two wiseguys, Albert "Lord High Executioner"Anastasia and Stefano "The Undertaker"Magaddino.

  • Not bad

by MS on 10/2/25Warner Theatre - WashingtonRating: 3 out of 5

A fine effort by a 71-year old man. Not surprisingly, he didn't quite have it, but tried his best and was entertaining. Played great songs, although I would have liked to have heard Oliver's Army. Finally, no encore, which I don't think I've experienced in any prior concert.

  • The sound was horrible

by TZ on 10/1/25Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 2 out of 5

The sound was horrible for most of the show. You couldn't make out the words or the song that was being played at times. Elvis's singing voice wasn't good. The sound man needs to find a new job!

  • MGM music hall has terrible sound in the balcony

by JT on 10/1/25MGM Music Hall at Fenway - BostonRating: 1 out of 5

The sound in the corner of the balcony is terrible. They should remove those seats. I’m sure Elvis Costello was great. Everyone a few seats away seemed to be enjoying it. But, in the corner balcony it sounded like instruments were all competing with each other, rather than working together. It was terrible. Guitars and vocals were barely audible.

  • Awful

by Not a fan live on 9/30/25Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 1 out of 5

Sound was terrible, songs unidentifiable, so disappointing. Still honor the old Elvis songs but stop if you can’t perform them! Did not stay past the first six songs.

  • Disappointing

by Lifelong Elvis Costello Fan on 9/30/25Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 2 out of 5

I’ve seen Elvis Costello in concert many times in the past. He’s was an amazing performer. The sound mixing at this concert was horrendous, the first third of the concert was overwhelmed by base and drums, and I wasn’t the only one who couldn’t hear the vocals or any of the guitars. The energy level was poor and it almost seemed like a really bad high school talent show imitation of Elvis Costello. The last third was better, with more energy and better sound but still not the Elvis Costello that I have seen before. If the band was responsible for the sound mixing shame on them. If it was the venue, the band should’ve been on top of that as well. This is a professional group that knows what they’re doing, and there’s no excuse for this type of concert. A lot of people paid good money for those tickets and I would’ve much rather sat in my basement and listened to recordings on Spotify.

  • Disappointed

by TR on 9/30/25Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 2 out of 5

Sound was off, had a hard time making out songs. Very disappointing of someone of this caliber. Stayed until the end, it was Elvis…

  • Greener pastures

by Man our of time on 9/30/25Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 4 out of 5

The music was outstanding. However, I was thinking that Elvis should have stopped touring 10 years ago. He kept up the energy throughout the show but his voice couldn't.

  • Chance to hear the old song you love.

    by Suesg1 on 9/30/25Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 4 out of 5

It was a great opportunity to hear the songs you’ve been wanting to hear. I enjoyed the versions of Radio, Radio, Pump it Up, and …Peace, Love, and Understanding. The sound quality was pretty bad in the balcony of the Akron Civic Theater. Seemed like a lot of distortion. Elvis’ vocals really struggled at times, but the audience was very enthusiastic. Kind of bummed that he chose to change the tempo and melody of 3-4 well known songs.

  • Very Good but could’ve been better

by Onitme on 9/30/25Akron Civic Theatre - AkronRating: 4 out of 5

First, I understand he wanted to do some oldies that he won’t be performing anymore, but he didn’t do anything from imperial bedroom. for the first part of the show. The sound was very muddy particularly Steve naïve piano and Elvis’s voice.. can you bring a gunslinger like Charlie Sexton out there and hardly let him solo, I was happy for the amount of songs. It was a very good show. It could’ve been a great show.

  • Great seats, muddy sound, disappointing performance.

by Shilohmom on 9/29/25Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

My review title pretty much sums it up. I’ve seen him many times, but this was the 1st time it was difficult to recognize what song he was singing. Pitch was frequently way off. It was kind of sad.

  • Overall good, could've been better

by Gonzo on 9/29/25Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

I was stoked to hear Charlie Sexton playing guitar, unfortunately only saw Charlie Sexton play guitar as he was so low in the mix he was inaudible, except for about 15 seconds of soloing when he was introduced towards the end of the night. Also a large chunk of the show was performed on the far left side of the stage which was completely out of view from our seats, so poor stage setup there. Speaking of the seats, there was absolutely no leg room so I had to have my legs and feet out into the aisle. Won't be sitting there again.

  • Disappointed, musical arrangement and stage presence

by Disappointed on 9/29/25Massey Hall - TorontoRating: 2 out of 5

This was a very disappointing experience, unfortunately the seats were located in the second balcony and were partially blocked with a support column for the auditorium. To compound this the lead singer, Elvis Costello, positioned himself closer to the left side of the stage where the view was slightly blocked by the column. To make matters worse, the majority (mid-portion) of the concert. Elvis sang and played from a piano that could not be seen from a majority of the seats within our area of the second balcony as the piano was positioned to the left rear of the stage. Furthermore, it appeared that the sound of the music was loader than that the singer's microphone sound, which made it difficult to hear his words. I have never experienced a concert like this. Very disappointed.

  • Elvis is King!

by Vanity Factory clerk on 9/26/25MGM Music Hall at Fenway - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Elvis and his royal Imposters put on a fabulous show Monday night at the MGM in Boston. With guitar help from Charlie Sexton, they rewarded the avid crowd with songs from the early catalog, while attendees returned the favor with call and response lyrics, in key, and on cue. Elvis crooned his ballads with the help of a Spanish guitar, and his court wizard, Steve Nieve. A seven song Royal Audience closed the evening, buttressed by the dynamic cadence of Sergeant at Arms, Pete Thomas on the kit. HRM Declan MacManus had done it once again for the appreciative crowd in Boston. Thank you sir!

  • Sound system

by Cathy on 9/26/25MGM Music Hall at Fenway - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

Sound system needs replacement. Makes me question if future events are worth attending at MGM Fenway
