About

Elvis Costello is a writer and part-time musician who made a number of records in the 20th Century, some of which are still remembered today.

He was born in London and raised there and in Liverpool.

Costello is the composer or lyricist of over six hundred published titles, including fifteen songs co-written with Paul McCartney and renowned collaborations with Allen Toussaint, the Brodsky Quartet and T Bone Burnett.

Costello's songwriting alliance with Burt Bacharach, began in 1995 with the song, "God Give Me Strength", which led to the 1998 album, "Painted From Memory", before their work was collected in 2023, on the four-album set, "The Songs Of Bacharach & Costello".

Elvis Costello songs have been recorded by Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Chet Baker, Dusty Springfield, Solomon Burke, George Jones, Linda Ronstadt and Bjork, while among the artists with whom he has written songs are Loretta Lynn, Carole King, Rosanne Cash and Kris Kristofferson and his wife, Diana Krall.

Working purely as a lyricist, Costello has provided words for the music of Billy Strayhorn, Oscar Peterson and for twelve Charles Mingus compositions and as a composer, set twelve unpublished lyrics by Bob Dylan.

2024 will see the opening of "A Face In The Crowd", Sarah Ruhl's stage adaptation of the Budd Schulberg story for which Elvis Costello composed the songs.

"A Face In The Crowd" will open at the Young Vic in London on INSERT DATE, directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah and produced by Adam Kenwright.

Elvis Costello is the author of "Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink", a more than six-hundred page memoir which has been translated into six languages. He has received a range of awards over his 45 year old career of which the induction into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame is probably the most significant.

Although he holds two honorary doctorates in music - one from the University of Liverpool and another from the New England Conservatory- Elvis Costello is known for playing the guitar with almost no regard for common sense.

Costello currently performs with The Imposters; his long time companions, drummer, Pete Thomas and pianist, Steve Nieve, bassist of twenty-three years standing, Davey Faragher and their special guest, Texas guitarist, Charlie Sexton.

  • Let an artist be an artist

by Mick on 7/10/23Rating: 4 out of 5

First time @MGM Fenway, and I am a fan. Second time seeing Elvis Costello live (1997?), and this was infinitely better. He was relaxed, personable, having a good night, and backed by an incredibly talented ensemble (as he was with the Attractions). Of course, there were songs I wished he had performed, (but we can all say that), but his rendition of Watching The Detectives was alone worth the price of admission. Re-interpreted, yes, but with an opportunity for everyone in the band getting an opportunity to shine .That is when you realize you are in the presence of a first rate group backing a first rate artist, and they are all firing on all cylinders. I thought the sound was getting “tinnier” ( and louder) as the night wore on, but my gang didn’t agree with me.

  • Not quite what we expected

by Linds on 7/10/23Rating: 3 out of 5

We got tickets to take our Dad for his birthday. We grew up listening to Elvis and were excited to hear some classics and new songs and have a special father daughter day. The whole vibe of the show was low key and pretty much remained that way throughout. He didn’t even play our two favorites “Pump it up” and “Red Shoes.” We can’t say we didn’t leave disappointed. Wished we didn’t spend the money on floor seats.

  • Worst Concert Ever!

    by nygal58 on 7/10/23Rating: 1 out of 5

Wow! Elvis Costello at the Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater was the WORST concert that my friends and I have ever attended. Elvis opened the show sitting down behind a microphone that hid his face. Seemed pleased with himself when he announced "new and reworked"arrangements for his hits. Don't be fooled by the playlist. "Pump It Up"was the only song that sounded remotely like the original version. A steady stream of early exits and audience talking throughout the entire performance. So disappointing as I was really looking forward to this show. The warmup, Nick Lowe and the Straightjackets, was the best part of the evening. I Do Not Recommend.

  • Excellent musicians, Excellent venue

    by E.C.F. 1982 on 7/10/23Rating: 4 out of 5

First time to MGM. We had floor seats. The sound was quite good. Lights were harshly blinding. Row identification on floor was difficult too see. Seat identification was unknowable until our neighbor informed us it is under seat. It's awkward to ask people populating our seats ahead of our arrival to get up and check seat bottom. Seven person row is a good idea. We missed much of Nick Lowe's set. Sorry Nick! He and the Straight jackets are a perfect opening. We never tire of seeing Elvis Costello and the Imposters. They always mix things up to keep it interesting. Jazzier set this year with brass section (loved it). Keep it rolling boys! See you next year!

  • Yes and no at Lyric

by jck on 7/10/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Was looking forward to seeing both Elvis and Nick Lowe as both were on my “have not seen before” list. Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets were great and I wished they would have played a longer set. Elvis was hit or miss. The first part of show featured some odd arrangements of unknown songs that he infused with a boom box of bad mixes and sounds. He was crooning ballads and seemed intently focused on arranging his horn section into the mix in a very non traditional way. It was odd and uncomfortable and the crowd looked confused. The last hour of the 2.5 hour set then got back to his rocker roots with an occasional slower song that did not seem as much out of place. I appreciate that artists want to stretch out but I will not be rushing out to see Elvis again soon unless he takes a different course.

  • Elvis Costello & the Imposters

by Raina on 7/10/23Rating: 4 out of 5

Elvis Costello and the Imposters put on a great show. Elvis and band were able to hit all the notes after all these years. Sadly, the sound was awful at the Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater in Bridgeport, though. We literally could not hear when Elvis was speaking to the audience, at all. And, the music and singing was very (for lack of the right term) muffled/distorted due what seemed to be very poor sound system/engineering quality.

  • Elvis

Elvis Costello is a great showman! Clearly loved being on stage and engaging with the audience. Will see him again!

  • Elvis C. Reworks Old Classics!

by Daryl Hall is a GRUMPY old man! on 7/9/23Rating: 4 out of 5

Nick Lowe and the Straitjackets warmed up the audience on a HOT night in Beantown. MGM Music Hall at Fenway is a beautiful, comfortable venue. Elvis C. & the Imposters + Charlie Sexton with a surprise brass trio were great! EC played for almost 2 1/2 hours - he seemed to like the venue and the audience. The Imposters and Charlie were as good as ever. Elvis played the slowest version of High Fidelity I have ever heard. No Pump It Up?! (Different!) Very few anthems played. With Shipbuilding and Peace Love & Understanding made his political views very clear to all without spouting off political diatribes. FUN show!

  • Elvis Rocks

by ARV on 7/9/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Beautiful venue (MGM Fenway Music Hall). Excellent opening act (Nick Lowe with Los Straightjackets). Career spanning 2 1/2 hour set from Elvis and the Imposters. High energy! Loved every minute. Excellent rapport with the audience. 5 stars!

  • Great Show

by SpizzyP on 7/9/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Nick Lowe is one of my favorite songwriters, so I always love seeing him. And this was my first time seeing Los Straitjackets - they did not disappoint! Elvis played for 2 1/2 hours! He did not seem to want to leave the stage. And I really appreciated how he played the songs with new, fresh arrangements. A real powerhouse!

  • Elvis at HHC Amphitheater

by JimBob on 7/8/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Really nice venue for a concert. However, this was 2nd time at HHC Amphitheater and the acoustics aren't that great. Music was too tinty overloaded the lyrics. Sounds crews need to work a little harder or the venue needs to upgrade system.

  • Just OK

by Keri on 7/8/23Rating: 3 out of 5

I have seen him so many times. Love him and his music but this show was just “OK”.

  • Great experience!

    by Mike M on 7/8/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Seating is comfortable with a good view of the stage. The large video screen bring in the detail. Sound was good my only complaint was that the vocals were a bit muddy. Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets were the perfect high energy warm up act. Definitely an excellent pairing. Elvis Costello and the Imposters were outstanding 👍🏻

  • What a Disappointment!

by TonyMuff on 7/8/23Rating: 2 out of 5

We walked out half way through Costello's muddled, sloppy, uninteresting show. The only reason I gave it any stars at all was the fact the the opening artists, Nick Lowe and Los Straightjackets were wonderful. Enough said!

  • Time to hang up those red shoes

by Jaybles on 7/8/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Though Elvis is my favorite musician—I've seen him many times before—I fear that old age has finally caught up with the beloved entertainer. Though he poured his heart and soul into every song, his voice just didn't match his enthusiasm. I still loved being there in the presence of greatness, but it was painful to see my main man struggle so much. In addition to his voice, I really couldn't understand the song choices for the first part of the show, nor did I understand the, sometimes, bizarre arrangements.

  • Disappointed

    by J. L. on 7/8/23Rating: 1 out of 5

Songs sounded disjointed. Elvis was singing so far behind the music that it almost sounded like another song. Sound system microphones were piercing and unbalanced for the front rows of the orchestra section. We moved to the balcony to hear it. Word to the wise, don’t spend for the upfront seats, there’s no speakers for you to hear. All you get is echo. A lot of new stuff. So disappointed.
