About

Dweezil Zappa was born on September 5, 1969, in Los Angeles, the son of the iconic musician Frank Zappa. Over the past three decades, Dweezil has carved out an eclectic and illustrious career that spans music, television, film, and entrepreneurship.

A Grammy-winning guitarist, Dweezil has left an indelible mark on the music industry with over 2000 concerts performed worldwide. Known for his masterful performances and deep connection to his father's music, he's returning to concert stages in 2024 for the first time since the 2020 Hot Ratz Live! Tour, continuing to guide fans through the thrilling and sophisticated world of his father's music.

His virtuosity on the guitar is matched only by his prolific compositional skills, which have generated numerous original works spanning multiple albums including "Confessions of Deprived Youth" (1991) and "Via Zammata" (2015). Notably, his compositions have even been performed by a 100-piece orchestra in Holland, showcasing his versatility and command of orchestral arrangements. His music effortlessly traverses genres, seamlessly weaving together elements of rock, fusion, and experimental sounds, all while maintaining a signature style that is unmistakably his own. In addition to his solo work, Dweezil has collaborated with an impressively varied roster of artists, including Edward Van Halen, Deep Purple, Lisa Loeb, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Steve Vai, among others.

In 2020, Dweezil further solidified his reputation as a pioneer in the industry by completing construction on "Hikari," a state-of-the-art multimedia studio. As a sought-after audio mix engineer, he showcased his expertise by crafting the stereo and Atmos mixes for the 50th anniversary re-release of Deep Purple's legendary album "Machine Head" in 2024, cementing his status as a unique voice in sound engineering.

Beyond his artistic pursuits, Dweezil is deeply passionate about music education. He frequently shares his knowledge and expertise by teaching guitar, both through his own music camp, "Dweezilla," and online lessons. His collaborative spirit has led him to work with a diverse array of musicians all while honoring the legacy of his father, Frank Zappa.

In all his endeavors, Dweezil remains committed to upholding integrity and pushing the boundaries of technology and creativity. As he continues to innovate and inspire, Dweezil Zappa stands as a true luminary in the world of music and beyond.

    Outstanding concert!

by mercolino on 6/28/10House of Blues Atlantic City - Atlantic City

I have seen hundreds of acts in hundreds of venues, and this by far stands near the top of the list, of the best all time shows! Dweezil is so unappreciated, and so below the radar of most folks when they think of musicians...it truly is something that is a shame for those who don't know. Although performing his father's music, Dweezil never eclipsed the music's integrity; but, at the same time, he and his band stood out as the awesome musicians that they are in their own right!! Kudos to the combination of talent, charisma, integrity and showmanship that this concert exemplified! Dweezil stayed long after the end of the encore, signing autographs and talking to fans; something not seen EVER in these days of high ticket prices and nosebleed seats in monster venues! The House of Blues is an incredible venue for any show, as it is intimate, with great sound, and near plenty of places to stay overnight. To Dweezil and the band: you guys were fantastic!!!! One of the best shows of my life!!!!

The crux of the biscuit was the musicianship

by SambucaChurch on 6/28/10House of Blues Atlantic City - Atlantic City

Have always been a fan of Frank Zappa's genius, as well as Dweezil's virtuosity on guitar. Both came together beautifully last night in the Zappa Plays Zappa show at the House of Blues in Atlantic City (terrific venue, by the way.) I've always loved Frank Zappa's attitude and wit, but wasn't sure if even Dweezil could put together a group of musicians which could truly capture the layered, rapid-fire construction which is the hallmark of his father's music. I was more than pleasantly surprised. Every member of the 8-piece band was spot on in their execution which focused on the expected (Nanook is a No No, Cosmic Debris) to the slightly more rare (Blue Light, My Old House.) All were done with expertise, craftsmanship and reverence to the originals. The vocalist was very true to the master's voice and attitude, and Dweezil's solos were brilliant, and delivered with an amazing nonchalance.... My only regret was that the crowd was relatively small. However, that allowed me to bolt my balcony seat, and make my way to about the third row of the floor. It was a really good time...

    Zappa Plays Zappa

by NatePickleMasher on 6/28/10House of Blues Atlantic City - Atlantic City

As always, the Zappa plays Zappa show was fantastic. They played some well known, and some not-so-well-known songs. The band was tight, and the music was awesome! I reccomend going to one of these shows.

Dweezil & Co. are amazing, but the sound was...

by FBMojo on 6/16/10Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

I've seen this band before, several times, different venues. I'd have to say that this was probably one of my 'lesser' experiences watching and listening to ZPZ. First off, I felt for the band, the reasons for their late appearance would have anyone in a sour mood (not as sour as a blue waffle mind you!). But between a somewhat subdued stage energy, and a multiple roster of technical issues (crackling cords, lost cords, RF noise on the PA, a crappy PA in the QE overall, etc), the show lacked its typical flair and uniqueness and groove I've come to expect from ZPZ. Furthermore, I follow ZPZ because of Frank, and this show seemed to lack the ever wished for presence of Frank. Albeit, Peaches was a great way to end the show, as was Muffin Man. MONDO props to Ben, the new do-all singer and front man, amazing vocals and tons of fun to watch - he had it going on. Dweezil, always amazed at his virtuosity, but the sound wasn't so hot last night - could it be the PA, the fact he's running an Axe FX Ultra instead of stomps, or a combination of both? Still love ya man, there isn't another band out there doing what it is you do, and as well as you do it. Next time, opt for stage amps and the Orpheum - peace. One last thing, some phenomenal jams happened last night - would have just been that much better if the PA was better in order to differentiate from all the instruments and their specific parts et al.

    Zappa keeps it alive

by AlvinX on 6/16/10Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

Dweezil Zappa once again played tribute to his father's musical brilliance by performing a subset of his music. The band was tight, as usual, and the addition of a new lead singer added to the experience of seeing the band again in a new light. The concert was excellent and the music was brilliant.

Zappa Plays Zappa is a must see for Zappa fans!

by BubbahBuddah on 1/22/10Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

The venue was intimate. The music was great. The musicians who are with Dweezil are some of the most talented and enthusiastic players and have worked tirelessly to play the music as it was intended to be played. Zappa fans will not be disappointed and those who have never heard the music of Frank Zappa will gain an appreciation of his music. It is a show not to be missed!

    Keeping a Legacy Alive

by TheTim on 1/14/10Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Dweezil Zappa does a fantastic job of presenting the legendary music of his father on the Zappa Plays Zappa tour. While many have not had the chance to see the late Frank Zappa in concert, this tour is the closet thing to it. Each of the seven members in the band are fantastic musicians and provide renditions of the classics that are very loyal to the originals. This particular tour is bound to attract all sorts of fans, from those just starting the dive into the music of Frank Zappa to longtime fans who simply enjoy seeing the music performed. Dweezil is not only a fantastic performer, guitarist, and musician in his own right, but also extremely personable, staying long ofter the house lights went up to sign autographs. If you have listened to Frank Zappa's work and wish to experience it live, then the Zappa Plays Zappa tour can't be passed up.

    Zappa plays Zappa is amazing

    by Blurred1 on 1/14/10Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Dweezil Zappa is an unbelievable talent. HIs own music in the 80's and 90's was a bit hokey, but taking time to learn his father's technique and bringing Frank's music to life is definitely his calling.

    Zappa Plays Zappa

by Yurinator on 1/12/10Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Son of the greatest composer/musician of the 20th century continues to bring us the beauty of Frank Zappa's creations in a form which probably is the closest to the original. True virtuosos accompany Dweezil Zappa on stage into the journey through the different periods of Frank's legacy. One can feel genetic connection between two generations, especially when Dweezil explodes into amazingly Zappaesque guitar solos, because it is not enough to be a great guitar player to perform at this level - one must have something in the bloodstream, something crazy, something unique in the brain and I call it Frank Zappa's gene. Obviously Dweezil has it. I am personally very grateful to Dweezil and his family for keeping the legacy of his father alive and to some degree sacrificing his own ambitions as an artist and musician in order to bring Frank's music to younger audiences in a form of live performances, which, to many was and still remains a life changing experience! Few would argue with once famous line from Frank Zappa - Music Is the Best!

    Zappa Lives!

by MMumber on 1/12/10Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Outstanding, tight band. My first live Zappa concert, though long time fan. Frank Zappa lives on in his son and company. This was much more than a tribute Beatlemania type show, as these were obviously accomplished muscicians carrying on a legacy of excellence. I look forward to future offerings, and hopefully plans for original material are underway as well.....

    ZPZ Is the Best

by DennisA on 1/12/10Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

This was a event that was well worth all I had to go through. I would given this a 5 if I did not have to give awat 3 tiickets, I just hope the people I gave them too join the club. The venue is small, the music was great all was good. This was my 3rd ZPZ show and snot my last. Dweezil and the band have really done their homework here. Thank You GHJ
