Dwayne Gretzky In Concert

The repertoire for Toronto-based supergroup Dwayne Gretzky? Oh, you know, only the greatest pop songs of all time.

From Springsteen to the Supremes, Bowie to Beyonce, The Beatles to Oasis, and the Beach Boys to the Beastie Boys, the collective known as Dwayne Gretzky is a live-band jukebox. And they're comprised of young, energized musicians totally and completely in love with the entire history of pop music.

Their commitment to the pop pantheon spans eras, genres, and styles, and their performances are more than nostalgia trips. Dwayne Gretzky is one of the most consistent concert draws in Toronto, boasting 100 sold-out shows in their hometown and slowly but surely taking over venues with capacities in the multiple thousands. Whether it's their newly minted summer camp weekend, their annual mega-blowout New Year's Eve celebration, or any of the dozens of club shows in between, DG puts on a sweat-drenched, crowd-pleasing, super sing-along of a performance. Every time.

The core of Dwayne Gretzky — singer/bandleader/former child actor Tyler Kyte and lead guitarist Nick Rose — play in EMI-signed dance-pop band Sweet Thing. They're backed by a rotating lineup that has featured a who's who of Toronto's fertile live music scene, including members of Arkells, Flash Lightnin', Allie Hughes, Born Ruffians, July Talk, and Our Lady Peace.

You never know who might catch the spirit and jump onstage with the band. What started out as a lark among seasoned musicians messing around onstage at a bar — this was before they even had a name, which later surfaced on a fan video posted to YouTube — has turned into a full-time vehicle for earnest, life-affirming self-expression.

The band often starts shows with no set list in mind, instead reading the room like a DJ would and picking, on the fly, from among the 80-plus songs in their repertoire. They've also dedicated sets, tours, and residencies to specific styles or eras, like "epic" rock songs or the 1990s. Whatever direction they choose, you have to love the songs they play — after all, they're all masterpieces.

The music was amazing! Such I went. We had a fantastic night and danced the night away

  • New Years Eve with Dwayne Gretzky

by Mitch on 1/6/23History - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The band was sensational as they always are and deserving of a five start review The Venue, History however left a little to be desired. Granted it was my first time at this club however if they had a few more trash cans available the entire dance floor would probably not be littered with empty beer cans, plastic drink cups and assorted refuse. It was quite disgusting and sticky The cost of drinks was also extremely high and made me think I was a Maple Leaf, Raptor or Blue Jays game. Two Tall boys and a tip was close to $30 as was 2 mixed drinks.

  • Great Live Band

by Wolfpack on 1/3/23History - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Very tight group. Great song selection. The band was having such a good time on stage you couldn’t help but want to dance and let loose. I also loved how the whole band shared the spotlight. Would see this group any time as they are in their element live.

  • Excellent showmanship, better setlist needed

by JackieW on 1/3/23History - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

The band is fantastic and likely the closest sound you can get to the actual artist themselves. However, they riff on each song way too long. Since they aren't the original artist, I don't want to hear them play all 4:45 of each song, or a 3 minute long guitar solo. In this instance we saw them on NYE and the first two sets stayed way, way too long in the 70s - it seemed like a themed show which is not what was advertised. Overall I wouldn't spend so much money to see them again as their performances drag on and we even ended up leaving before their last set as they got tired of hearing the same sounds over and over again.

  • So fun

A friend recommended seeing this band and I'm so glad I didn't! Had such a blast! The music was amazing, great energy from the band and they kindly chatted and posed for photos after :) Highly recommend and can't wait to see them next time they're in town!!!

  • Sweet show, I miss the old venue.

by ConandoL on 1/5/15The Danforth Music Hall - TorontoRating: 3 out of 5

Dwayne Gretzky always delivers. I love their New Years show, its been consistently awesome. However the change in venue to me was disappointing. Dwayne, if you're out there... Keep the integrity of the event alive by not overselling. I missed the majority of your set just trying to figure out where I could go to the bathroom. I had to leave periodically to search outside the venue, just saying.

  • Great event
