DOOMTREE IN CONCERT:

Indie hip hop collective Doomtree has been repping the Minneapolis rap scene for more than a decade with fresh beats, complex wordplay, and a genre-spanning sound that incorporates jazz, punk, and blues. At seven members strong the group is a formidable live act, and they keep the energy and swagger flowing as they perform cuts from their impressive catalog. Whether they're spitting rhymes to the heavy breakbeat of "Drumsticks" or making fans bounce with underground favorite "Bangarang", Doomtree delivers a party-worthy concert experience that showcases each member's unique talents with creative lyrical interplay, live beat-making, and on-the-fly production work.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Doomtree formed gradually in the early '00s as various Minneapolis-based rappers and musicians coalesced around the work of founding member P.O.S., a local hip hop artist with a background playing punk and experimental noise music. By mid-decade the collective had expanded to include Dessa, Cecil Otter, Sims, Mike Mictlan, Paper Tiger, and Lazerbreak. In 2005 they put the Twin Cities music scene on the map with the inaugural Doomtree Blowout, a yearly festival showcasing their live performances and promoting other local acts. Following several mixtape releases, the seven-member lineup dropped their self-titled debut album in 2008, which reached No. 7 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart, and embarked on a regional tour. In 2011 they released their sophomore album No Kings, a stellar record that earned widespread praise from critics and landed them on Time Magazine's 2012 list of "11 Great Bands You Don't Know (But Should)". In 2014 the band announced that the 10th annual Doomtree Blowout would be the last, but were quick to add that they were not breaking up -- welcome news for ticket buyers looking forward to the group's next tour.

    More Dessa!!!

by DarkandFair on 12/14/10First Avenue - Minneapolis

Show was really very good, but I would have loved to see more Dessa! Her talent is tremendous and the writing is superior to anyone else in Doomtree. But the show was great and it was awesome that they scheduled an additional night for all the people that couldn't make it because of the blizzard. Overall, excellent.

The show was a ton of fun. I went to the "snow out" (the second all ages show, made up because if the blizzard).

    Doomtree gets mad love.

by BennoTron on 12/13/10First Avenue - Minneapolis

This show was wild...the Doomtree family has far more confidence and presence live than they seem capable of conveying in the studio. Their performance was extremely high-energy...a feat only capable with heavy crowd interaction and a sound system capable of deafining even the most experienced of concert goers. They sounded great, and seeing several members perform a few of their signature songs gave me a new appreciation for even those in the crew that haven't yet achieved wider notariety. All in all, the crowd was great, the venue was appropriate (although a poorly timed bathroom break lost me a spot near the front and I ended up seeing most of the concert peeping through gaps in the throng of bouncing supporters), and the doomtree clan didn't disappoint. Go to their next blowout and be amazed that everyone in the crowd knows every word to every song.

You want a good rap show? Here's the best.

I had the incredible privilege of getting to see the Doomtree Blowout at FIrst Ave on 12-12-2010. First, this band is incredible because they were not supposed to perform that night: the original show was on the night of a terrible blizzard, so tons of people (including myself) got snowed in They played for that night and would not cancel the show, which is awesome. Then, they opened it up for another night (Doomtree Snowout). This is how much they love their fans. That was the energy they brought into First Ave. And the fans ate it up. It was one of the most energetic crowds I've been in. For the set list, they not only played a ton of fan favorite DTR songs, but they got to three-four songs from the solo projects of each member. Since they are all incredible artists in their own rights, it was a solid three show that never let up. The venue is always great. I've seen a lot of shows there and thank them for allowing not only another night of the Blowout, but also for letting the band put a "catwalk" in so they could walk out into the crowd. Overall, it was a crazy show that I am so glad I got to be a part of. The fans are always great and the band is the best. Wings and teeth.

Best Show I've Been To Yet

by Obsessedddddddddd on 12/13/10First Avenue - Minneapolis

This group works so well together and has pure talent with words and stage presence. You don't even have to know a lot of the words to get really into the show. It wasn't just listening to music it was connecting with a lot of amazing artists and djs.

I could not sleep the night before in anticipation. I was nearly shaking with excitement when they were all together on one stage. They FAR exceeded my expectations. I died and went to DTR heaven that night. Brilliance, Originality, and Creativity in the Hip-Hop world. Minneapolis, we are SO lucky to have them!

This was hands down the most amazing show I have seen in a long time. It was great seeing sooooo much Hometown Talent doing their thing in a Major way.

Best concert I've ever seen. Doomtree never disappoints. This is the third time I have seen some or all of the doomtree crew, and this is the best show yet.

    Doomtree was a high-energy, love-all-around event!

by Overlyimpressedfan on 12/12/10First Avenue - Minneapolis

The Doomtree crew opens their collective arms to give you a hug and welcome you into their incredibly cool (and talented) family. All of its members uniquely contribute--Paper Tiger's beats, Lazerbeak's "pop" songs, Dessa's soul, Mike's energy, Sims's lyrics, Cecil's cut-up voice and laidback delivery, and P.O.S.'s eminating love for everything. The collective individuality of it all creates for a you-don't-know-what-they'll-do-next feel. And it also makes it feel like you're watching a real family. (My brother and I are very different, and I imagine if we took the stage together it would be a similar, but with far less talent, mash up.) As a native of St. Paul I look forward to watching the Doomtree crew grow as a group and individually.

    The Venue

by jcm136 on 11/22/10the Roxy - West Hollywood

I was actually there to see the opening act, Midnite Theory. I'm an LA native and I have seen this local band before and am in love with their style of music. They put on a great show. The other acts were great as well. The venue though. I am in love with the venue. If you like that feeling where you might as well be touching the artist, than you'll love this venue. The stage is pretty low and you can see the action from pretty much any point on the floor. I was front row but after MT were done I went to the bar for a drink and just milled around watching the next acts and it was just a great atmosphere. =)

    Went to see P.O.S but...

    by roxxy009 on 11/22/10Masquerade - Atlanta

Doomtree and Dessa were absolutely incredible as well. I had heard of Doomtree but I wasn't really too familiar with their music and they just blew my mind. Of course, the highlight for me was seeing P.O.S perform. He was just awesome. I got a picture with him talked with him for a mintute, nicest most talented guy ever. I would have 3xs what I paid to see them and definitely plan on going again. I drove all the way from Knoxville Tn and it was worth every cent. If you don't know who Doomtree, Dessa, or P.O.S is, do yourself a favor and check these guys out. You will not be disappointed!

It was fun to see the whole crew together. They were all on stage the whole time performing their own songs and songs together.
