Dokken in Concert

Dokken on Tour

Back in 2016, LA pop-metal pioneer Don Dokken put the 21st-century iteration of his eponymous band on pause and reunited its classic ‘80s version for a tour of the country where they were most warmly received in their heyday: Japan. The trip resulted in a live album, Return to the East (a sequel to 1988's iconic, Grammy-nominated concert set, Beast from the East) as well as this lineup's first new recording together in over 20 years, "It's Another Day." The reunion proved to be short-lived — guitarist George Lynch returned to the group he'd been leading since the ‘90s, Lynch Mob, while original drummer Mick Brown hung up the sticks for good in 2019. But this band has survived many personnel changes before, and Dokken have entered the 2020s with a revamped roster that includes guitarist Jon Levin (Don's right-hand man since the early 2000s) and the House of Lords rhythm section of drummer BJ Zampa and bassist Chris McCarvill.

Dokken Background

Some people are just born with perfectly rock ‘n' roll names, and when Don Dokken's first group, Airborn, were forced to rebrand due to legal issues in 1978, he wisely went with his surname as a replacement. Over the next decade, Dokken would become a one-word shorthand for ‘80s pop-metal in all its shrieking, fist-pumping glory. But before they became fixtures of the Sunset Strip scene, Dokken cut their teeth in the notorious metal hotbed of Germany, where the band recorded their first album, 1981's Breaking the Chains (and where Don burnished his powerful pipes in recording sessions with Scorpions). Two years later, the album was re-released in the US through Elektra Records, introducing stateside audiences to Don's melodically majestic vocals and guitarist George Lynch's dexterity with muscular riffs and shredtastic solos. As the hair-metal explosion raged through the ‘80s, the band would become fixtures on MTV thanks to the crunch-rock confections like "In My Dreams" and the epic power ballad "Alone Again." The group's golden period came to an end in 1989 when Lynch departed to form his own band, Lynch Mob, and Don released his solo debut. But since then, Don has kept the Dokken name alive for over four decades through a series of reinventions and reformations, demonstrating his undiminished desire to get your fists and cigarette lighters in the air.

    George Lynch is ON FIRE!!!

by Guitar Mike on 3/9/20Hard Rock Live - Biloxi

If you are a Lynch fan, do not miss this show. Lynch is tearing up the stage. All of Lynch Mob sound amazing. Don maybe be down, but he is not out and the fact that he went out on this tour is a testament to his spirit. I thoroughly enjoyed both bands, but Lynch Mob and Dokken with George were what I went to see. I was not let down.

    Dokken/Lynch Mob

by Christine on 3/9/20Hard Rock Live - Biloxi

George Lynch is a fantastic guitarist! Both bands were really good. Mr. Dokken has reportedly suffered some severe neurological damage from a botched neck surgery and it is evident. He appears to be in significant pain and his voice seems to have suffered as well. He apologized and explained throughout the show, but he carried on being very much the trooper. This was the first show if the your and I respect him for trying, but perhaps some speech therapy could help him regain his voice. I wish him well and a full recovery.

Lita Ford Fantastic at Penn’s Peak!

    by R. B. on 10/28/19Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

Lita rocked in her skin tight skeleton outfit! She is so talented & when she smiled; oh she was even more beautiful. She was very gracious, praising her band mates. I wish she would have sang “Lisa” but maybe next year. My husband & I really enjoyed Lita’s concert! I believe the show was sold out but Penn’s Peak seemed very roomy. You could stand in pit area, there were seats behind that area on the floor, seating all along sides & up on 2nd floor. There were plenty of monitors if someone blocked your view of stage. Only a few drunks who thought you would rather hear their obnoxious loud mouths & see them grope their date. Respect the artists & others who want to enjoy the concert please. Didn’t know any of the Dokken songs. Dokken’s music was good but couldn’t make out the words. Parking here was a breeze. Penn’s Peak is off the beaten path but worth the trip.

Lita Ford rocked her butt off, Don Dokken needs to retire.

by Cbhwoman on 10/28/19Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

The venue really shouldn't book any events until the rennovations are done, it is far too complicated for parking and for driving into the area. Lita Ford should have been the headliner, Dokken is past their expiration date.

    No internet service

    by A. S. on 10/28/19Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

That would have been helpful to know before I got there. I would have printed my tickets had I known.

    Great Bands. Terrible sound

by TooTallBret on 10/27/19Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

The bands were great. But the poor quality sound system was turned up so loud that the only sounds that came out were distorted noise.

    Dokken was Rockin!!

by CJ on 5/14/19The Plaza at MGM Springfield - Springfield

Dokken was great at MGM Springfield singing all the best songs of a great career. He was friendly enough to chat it up with some of us waiting up front by the stage after the show. The venue was great and I look forward to making the trip to see more of the 80's rock bands I have always enjoyed. Great booking.

    A little dissapointed

by Misty126 on 5/14/19The Plaza at MGM Springfield - Springfield

The opening band Last In Line was excellent. What I disliked about Dokken was they were so loud that it was hard to hear the vocals over the music. Sound system could have used some adjusting. However, the plaza was an amazing place to watch a concert.

    Rockin Experience

by D on 5/14/19The Plaza at MGM Springfield - Springfield

Dokken and Last in Line put on a great show! Venue was perfect. Could have started earlier. I believe that was the venue's decision, not the bands. Will look forward to future shows.
