Dokken in Concert

Dokken on Tour

Back in 2016, LA pop-metal pioneer Don Dokken put the 21st-century iteration of his eponymous band on pause and reunited its classic ‘80s version for a tour of the country where they were most warmly received in their heyday: Japan. The trip resulted in a live album, Return to the East (a sequel to 1988's iconic, Grammy-nominated concert set, Beast from the East) as well as this lineup's first new recording together in over 20 years, "It's Another Day." The reunion proved to be short-lived — guitarist George Lynch returned to the group he'd been leading since the ‘90s, Lynch Mob, while original drummer Mick Brown hung up the sticks for good in 2019. But this band has survived many personnel changes before, and Dokken have entered the 2020s with a revamped roster that includes guitarist Jon Levin (Don's right-hand man since the early 2000s) and the House of Lords rhythm section of drummer BJ Zampa and bassist Chris McCarvill.

Dokken Background

Some people are just born with perfectly rock ‘n' roll names, and when Don Dokken's first group, Airborn, were forced to rebrand due to legal issues in 1978, he wisely went with his surname as a replacement. Over the next decade, Dokken would become a one-word shorthand for ‘80s pop-metal in all its shrieking, fist-pumping glory. But before they became fixtures of the Sunset Strip scene, Dokken cut their teeth in the notorious metal hotbed of Germany, where the band recorded their first album, 1981's Breaking the Chains (and where Don burnished his powerful pipes in recording sessions with Scorpions). Two years later, the album was re-released in the US through Elektra Records, introducing stateside audiences to Don's melodically majestic vocals and guitarist George Lynch's dexterity with muscular riffs and shredtastic solos. As the hair-metal explosion raged through the ‘80s, the band would become fixtures on MTV thanks to the crunch-rock confections like "In My Dreams" and the epic power ballad "Alone Again." The group's golden period came to an end in 1989 when Lynch departed to form his own band, Lynch Mob, and Don released his solo debut. But since then, Don has kept the Dokken name alive for over four decades through a series of reinventions and reformations, demonstrating his undiminished desire to get your fists and cigarette lighters in the air.

    Dokken and Lynch Mob

by Chunks1 on 11/29/09House of Blues Sunset Strip - Hollywood

Great show overall. After 17 years, seeing George Lynch and Don Dokken sharing the same stage was priceless! George Lynch still has the chops, it was great watching him play on stage. Lynch Mob playing only a short set of about eight songs. Half of the set was off the new album, which didn't seem to light up the crowd like the old stuff or "Mr Scary". Dokken was excellent! Don's voice was a little rough and lacked some resonance due to a cold. But it was a great performance overall of all the 80's hits. One of the bright spots was Dokken's guitarist, he pulled off Lynch note-for-note. I don't know his name but he possesses great technical ability, every alternate picking scale came off clean and phrasing was the signature searing Lynch style. WELL DONE!!

    Rockin' with Dokken

by DoubleDog on 11/29/09House of Blues Sunset Strip - Hollywood

What a night at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip! More like a big party than a concert. The band was firing on all cylinders and the crowd was diggin' it so much, we didn't want it to end! New guitarist Jon Levin was astounding, Don Dokken was in good spirits and kept us laughing between songs. Super song selection!

    Awesome show

by vSilva777 on 11/28/09House of Blues Sunset Strip - Hollywood

Don Dokken and the guys were great-- even though Don was a bit sick and couldn't hit the high notes! The crowd was very into the show and there was a good vibe there. I think Dokken brought out the young nice kids we once were and we all felt their great music. It was a great trip back in time.

    Dokken on the Strip

by dval12884 on 11/28/09House of Blues Sunset Strip - Hollywood

16 Second Stare had amazing energy and I wish the set was longer. We'll be hearing more from these guys. Definite highlight. Lynch Mob - absolutely amazing - George was phenominal. Logan's vocals were perfect (-no live band disappointment stuff....) Dokken - the guitar and vocals were mixed perfectly - too bad Don's voice was having trouble after song 3, but he held it in there and gave a great performance.... ( you're voice would be having trouble after a world tour with only three shows to go....) All in all, the sound was tight for all the bands - the mix was perfect - and the atmosphere was great... too bad it had to end....

Dokken put on a great show! played to the crowd, played all the hits, showcased the talents of the individual members...it was a great time had by all. Even got to meet all the members of the band after the show! All were super-nice! Parable Heresy was even pretty good, too!

FINALLY, a proper Dokken headlining show!!!!

by ULTRAMAN on 7/23/09Chameleon Club - Lancaster

At long last, I saw Dokken headlining in Pennsylvania!!!! I've been waiting to see them, since their initial breakup twenty years ago!! While not all albums were represented(1999's Erase The Slate, 2002's Long Way Home, and 2004's Hell To Pay), most of the essential Dokken classics were included in the set-"Into The Fire", "In My Dreams", "Alone Again", "The Hunter", "Breaking The Chains", etc. Perhaps, the most noticeable omission was "Dream Warriors"! Surprisingly, they only played for approximately an hour-and fifteen minutes!! That seems a wee bit short for a headliner!! I saw them headlining the 2002 Metal Edge Rockfest at the Electric Factory, with Ratt, Warrant, Firehouse, and L.A. Guns. However, the show started as late as 8:30PM, so all five bands were restricted to an hour each!! It was also nice to see Dokken in such a small, intimate setting again! My only drawback with the club itself is that there was no seating indoors!! Overall, if necessary, I would return to this venue to see Dokken, if they were unable to book a concert closer to Philadelphia! Many of the classic 80's heavy metal bands are active once again-Queensryche, Stryper, W.A.S.P., Anthrax, Yngwie Malmsteen, etc. Many continue to play the smaller venues. As long as they play within a reasonable distance, I intend to make the necessary effort to catch them live!!

    Don Dokken Rocked!

by Leppard on 7/22/09Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

As always, Dokken rocked and was a crowd pleaser! It was better seeing him at Penn's Peak, than the previous 2 places that I saw him, because there is more space ... so we did not have to be packed in like sardines in a can, and the sound seemed clearer!

Don Dokken agin but still knows how to rock

by Jimmyjames4711 on 7/17/09Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

He's the first to admit his age, but he still knows how to put on a great show. He and Mick Brown are the only two original members from the days of "Under Lock & Key" and "Tooth & Nail", etc. The new guitarist, I do not know his name, seems to be good guitarist, but hard to tell when you live under the "ghost" of George Lynch. The opening act, Spider Rockets could have been stronger. There are tons of lesser known bands such as Blacklist Union, Babylon Bombs, etc., that could have open the show and really put it over the top. Overall I would recommend seeing Dokken if you are fan, but don't be saddened by the lack of the original line-up. Great Job Don!

That was one of the BEST concerts I have ever seen

by Xtremerick on 7/17/09Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

Dokken has long been one of my all time favorite bands and I never had the opportunity to see them. They certainly didn't disappoint. I am sure that anyone that knows their music was wondering how Johnny Levin would do replacing George Lynch-- He was absolutely incredible --I think he was better! The way the whole band befriended the crowd and just had fun let everyone there have fun and not feel like the band was just "going through the routine" Absolutely awesome! And you could not see Dokken in a better place than Penn's Peak, a close intimate setting where all the staff was very helpful and polite and the food at Roadies was excellent (I would highly recommend trying it before a show if you didn't)! I would love to see Dokken come back! Thank you to Dokken and Penn's Peak and Roadies for a great night out!

    Dokken fans won't be disappointed

by Swick on 7/17/09Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

1st off, Penn's Peak is one of THE best places to see a show, bar none! It is a beautiful wooden chalet that sits upon the top of a mountain. Great place to go have dinner and some reasonably priced drinks on multiple decks overlooking an incredible valley. Once in the venue, there are NO bad seats whatsoever. It is small and intimate enough that you never feel far away and it is far enough removed from the city crowds (NY/ Philly) where you get a much more friendly, less jerked-off crowd... You can go into the pit and get right up near the stage and not get bashed into and have beer spilled on you every 2 seconds. As for Dokken, he is getting up there in age, but he still gives it all he's got up there. He plays to the crowd, interacting frequently between songs. Also, Dokken plays all their big hits from the 80's and they put on a nice show that exceeds an hour and a half. If I had one complaint, it would be that they did not have a strong supporting band... in fact, the opening act was horrible (The Spider Monkees, or something like that). At this time, Dokken does not have the following it had in the 80's and early 90's so they do not have the draw to fill the arenas alone. Penn's Peak only holds about 2500 people and it was about 3/4 empty. Next time, I would suggest they hook up with one of their fellow 80's bands and rock it out as a co-headlining gig... better for them and better for the fans! However, for the real Dokken fans, this is certainly a treat... thus the 4 stars!

    Dokken rocked the house

by RARETOYcom on 7/16/09Chameleon Club - Lancaster

Went out to see Dokken in Lancaster, PA. The show was great and the venue was great too. Evalyn's Ashes opened and rocked the house too. Chameleon Club is great because of its smaller size. The bouncers aren't near as bad with the tudes as some places. Wish Don would since Deam Warriors though :(
