About

Dion DiMucci, best known mononymously as Dion, is a world-renowned singer and songwriter with a career spanning decades. Best known for doo-wop jukebox classics like "Runaround Sue," "The Wanderer" and "Ruby Baby," Dion earned 39 Top 40 hits across the 1950s and '60s both as a solo artist and with the Belmonts and the Del-Satins. Many classic pop and rock musicians, such as Paul Simon, Lou Reed and Bryan Adams, cite Dion as a direct influence on their work.

Born in the Bronx in 1939, Dion found musical inspiration from his father, a vaudeville performer. Dion was also drawn to the blues, doo-wop and country music, particularly that of Hank Williams. In the early days of his career, Dion sang in local clubs around the Bronx and on street corners. In 1957, Dion was teamed up with Bob and Gene Schwartz to form doo-wop group the Belmonts, with Dion singing lead vocals. Together, they toured with Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper, and Frankie Sardo. In 1959, Dion narrowly escaped tragedy when he declined to join the other performers on a flight to the next tour stop, opting instead to take the bus. The plane crashed, killing all on board.

In 1960, Dion checked into rehab for heroin addiction. Subsequently, he pursued a solo career and released his first solo album, Alone With Dion, in 1961. Later that same year, Dion recorded "Runaround Sue" (co-written by Ernie Maresca) with the Del-Satins--the single was a smash, hitting No. 1 and selling over a million copies. Dion also found significant fame via "The Wanderer," a B-side to "The Majestic" and also written by Maresca. The same year, Dion performed around the world and appeared in Columbia Pictures' musical film Twist Around The Clock. He signed with Columbia the following year.

From 1965 on, Dion began performing more blues-driven material and teamed up with a new group, the Wanderers, featuring former Belmonts bandmate Carlo Mastrangelo on drums. In 1966, Dion reunited with the Belmonts, recording one LP, Together Again.

By the late 1960s, Dion began singing predominantly Christian material, recording Dick Holler's "Abraham, Martin and John" in response to the decade's assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. The song was enormously successful, selling over one million copies and was certified gold.

Dion spent the 1970s and part of the 80s recording contemporary Christian music. He also reunited with the Belmonts in 1972, releasing a live album Reunion: Live At Madison Square Garden. In 1984, Dion won the GMA Dove Award, also known as the Christian Music Award, for the 1983 album I Put Away My Idols. He was also nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Vocal Performance, Male for the same album. In 1987, Dion published his autobiography, The Wanderer: Dion's Story.

In 1989, Dion was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was introduced by Lou Reed. Later, in 2002, Dion was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for "Runaround Sue." Dion's 2006 album of blues and country standards, Bronx in Blue, was nominated for a Grammy and peaked at No. 2 on the Top Blues Albums chart.

Over the past 20 years, Dion has stayed extremely busy, releasing more than 10 solo studio albums, including 2007's Son of Skip James, 2020's Blues With Friends, and 2021's Stomping Ground, which became Dion's second No. 1 blues album. He has also collaborated with the likes of Joe Bonamassa, Van Morrison, Jeff Beck, Paul Simon, and Bruce Springsteen.

    NOT EVEN WORTH THE 40.00

by Anonymous on 7/26/10Theatre at Westbury - Westbury

MY HUSBAND AND I THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO HAVE A GREAT NIGHT. AN OLDIES NIGHT, BRING BACK ALOT OF MEMORIES. WELL WE WERE VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT NIGHT. THE FIRST ACT KENNY VANCE AND THE PLANATONES, WERE EXCELLENT. THEY PLAYED GREAT MUSIC, THEY HAD EVERYBODY UP DANCING, CLAPPING HANDS, SINGING ALONG. IT WAS ALOT OF FUN TO WATCH THEM. I KIND OF WISH THEY WOULD HAVE JUST STAYED AND PLAYED MORE THE REST OF THE NIGHT. THEN WE HAD INTERMISSION, AND DION CAME ON. LETS JUST SAY, WE SHOULD HAVE LEFT AFTER KENNY VANCE. ALL OUR FUN STOPPED. HE DIDNT SOUND GOOD AT ALL, THE GUYS IN THE BAND DIDNT EVEN LOOK LIKE THEY WANTED TO BE THERE. NO ONE IN THE AUDIENCE WAS CLAPPING, SINGING ALONG. WE ENDED UP LEAVING AFTER HE DID MAYBE SIX OR SEVEN SONGS. I COULDNT TAKE IT ANYMORE. I WOULD NEVER GO AGAIN TO SEE DION...SORRY DION...

Both Dion and Kenny were fantastic

by Ginnick on 7/25/10Theatre at Westbury - Westbury

It was a great night. Both Kenny Vance and the Planetones and DION put on great shows. The music was great, the singing phenomenal, and the jokes were great too. The only problem with the show was the theatre. There were times during the show that it felt like the air conditioning was turned off. They had a basicly over 50 crowd on a very hot day and the air was not working up to par. People were fanning themselves, trying to keep cool. Some people actually left, the people behind us left because she felt like she was going to pass out. I will give careful thought to going to another show at Westbury because of being so uncomfortable at the show. I will check other venues to see if the ones I want will be somewhere else in the area, such as Atlantic City or Mohegan Sun. But I will state again that the show was absolutely great, thanks to the groups and not the surroundings.

    Dion

by Ramalama on 7/25/10Theatre at Westbury - Westbury

The concert was good except he spent too much time doing cover tunes than his own hits. Dion himself came across excellent; he was amicable, funny, personable, spoke to the audience...connected very well with the exception of his "hit" list.

Dion ! He delivers! Please come again!

by teahan on 7/25/10Theatre at Westbury - Westbury

Seeing and listening to Dion live was an unforgettable experience. He was comfortable with his terrific band and spoke to the audience as if they were family. I relished his "sit down" set where he shared personal stories about other entertainer s he came in contact with and admired over the years. They are all well known artists. I wish that part of the show was longer. However he did not dissapoint his older fans with his classic songs while playing some songs from his current rock n' roll album. I still think of him as an artist of today because one, he can still sing and write and tow can still play a mean guitar. I'm grateful for his keeping music interesting even today.

Still King of the New York Streets

by ARBN18 on 7/25/10Theatre at Westbury - Westbury

Having been a die-hard Dion fan from way back, it's always nice when The Wanderer comes home. Last night's concert at Westbury Music Fair (July 24th) far exceeded our expectations. When he came out with his trademark "Yo," Dion took us all back to the Bronx and his teenage years. He shared a bit of his history with us and combined that with some great stories about the music legends that have influenced him throughout his career. His entire show took on a relaxed, comfortable format, as Dion set the tone and the mood for the evening. We've seen Dion perform many times and were truly impressed with how he changes up his show, keeping it fresh each time, unlike so many of his contemporaries. He always comes across as thoroughly enjoying himself while singing the same songs he has performed thousands of times, making it seem like the first time he's singing them. His band added to the musical genius of the evening with their foot-tapping, can't-stay-in-your-seat, pulsating rock and roll sound. They, too, were having a ball. Dion's hit songs remain as euphoric today as they were when we all Teenagers in Love. I could go on and on about Dion's 'performance last night; his voice is still strong, his personality makes us feel like he's still back on Belmont Avenue and we're all there with him. Dion is still and will always be the King of the New York Streets! Can't wait to see him again!

    Dion and Kenny Vance

by Patcaw on 7/25/10Theatre at Westbury - Westbury

Kenny Vance and the Planatones were nothing short of FABULOUS! They got the audience involved from the first note. The acoustics were great and they were as clear as a bell. We all marveled at their talent and are great fans for years. Their sound has not diminished one bit. Would see them over and over again!! We were disappointed in Dion. We were expecting a lot more of HIS original songs - which was the main reason we went to see him. The last segment, when he sang his old songs was great, wish there was more. Overall, going back to the 50's was a fabulous treat and it was wonderful to see the thousands who were so glad to be part of the night.

To Dion from a former Bronx chic

by Pookie216 on 7/25/10Theatre at Westbury - Westbury

I originally grew up in the Bronx so I of course love Dion and the Yankees! Dion has and always gives his best and last night was no exception, he lit up all the people at the show. He brought back lots of great memories. Dion's voice was strong and his personality was great. It's nice to hear that he never forgets where his roots were. I am so looking forward to seeing him next year when he comes back to Westbury! So, thanks Dion for all your music then and now. From, A Bronx Chic

Still rocking after all these years

by denlo on 7/25/10Theatre at Westbury - Westbury

Dion has been one of our top favorites from the late 50's on through to today. We have caught many of his concerts over the years including all of his recent Westbury shows. This ranks as one of his very best. So much soul. Unlike a lot of "oldies" performers his shows always offer something unique. Sure he does the "hits" with modified arrangements, keeping them fresh. He also does other oldies, some blues and album tracks from his entire catalog. Never is his show a carbon copy of his last. Plus he has a great band and is a wonderful storyteller. Only downside to the show was the opening act, Kenny Vance. Vance is very talented and has a good band musically they are very sound. The problem for me is their stage performance which at best is corny. They act like Knights of Columbus acts version of a Vegas lounge act. They should just stick to the music. Also at nearly 100 degrees some air conditioning would have been nice!

Doo Wop and Dion at Fraze - Magic

    by brillbuildNo1 on 6/22/10Fraze Pavillion - Kettering

As a follower of all things pertaining to the Brill Building, this concert looked to be a dream come true. And it was that and more. All the acts were great, The Soul Stirrers were great with their gospel and Sam Cooke songs. The Flamingos were such a class act and the harmonies were wonderful. Shirley Alston Reeves and her 2 back up singers were entertaining and did some of the greatest Shirelle hits. Got goose bumps! The Drifters (I've seen them in one form or another 3 times) are simply phenomenal. I love Charlie Thomas and yes, my wife also (see another review) really liked the moves of, I think his name is Louis Bailey. "Up on the Roof" brought tears to my eyes. Then there was Dion. I was hoping for a great rock and roll band and the first band was good but Dions was great. They really complemented Dion. He did some of his best hits and some Buddy Holly, like "Rave On." Yes, he could have chatted more but maybe it was better to hear the music (you can read his history other places...) Run Around Sue - nothing can top that. The sound maybe could have been mixed better BUT the volume was perfect. I've been to concerts that hurt your ears (sorry Boss) but this was loud enough and just right. I can't tell you how much fun we had. The Fraze is a great place for concerts and the staff are very professional. It you ever get a chance go to the Fraze. This was our first time, we live 400 miles away. We'd love to come back. Go see these acts anyway you can.

Dion in Kettering OH (Fraze Pavillion)

by FromCalifornia on 6/15/10Fraze Pavilion - Kettering

Dion, the headliner, was great and for that matter, all the acts which I would give this part a 5 Star ratng and recommend anyone to see Dion. The 3 Star rating is only that the venue was not as comfortable since it is an outside all-open theater. The weather cooperated, no rain during the concert, but it was humid.

    Dion Outstanding

by brunnegd on 6/14/10Fraze Pavilion - Kettering

The opening acts were entertaining, but the show was Dion, still rocking after all these years. To me he was the act that fused Do-Wop and R&R. Runaround Sue is one of the all time R&R hits, no matter whether you prefer 50s/60s or Classic Rock. Too bad the show wasn't a sellout.

Hall of Fame Rockers still got it

by EncinoFats on 6/14/10Fraze Pavilion - Kettering

The Soulsters opened with a taste of old time Rock n Roll and the evening slowly built to a rousing creshendo. The Flamingos hit most of the right notes and were entertaining, Shirley Austin-Reeves still has a wonderful voice and her songs brought back warm fuzzy memories. The Drifters, well, weren't on long enough. The Charlie Thomas led trio could have done another set of their fabulous hits and standards. The only criticism of Dion was why would someone with his full record of hits want to cover Buddy Holly of Joe Turner? His songs were great, his voice was strong and while he could have chatted a little more, he was the perfect capper to a perfect stroll down memory lane.

Supporting acts were great, merit more stage time.

by dukeandchristy on 6/14/10Fraze Pavilion - Kettering

Although Dion was really good, the other acts deserved more time. They were just too good to have to settle for such short performances from them. There was so much talent on that stage that this show could have been a full afternoon or day of Doo-Wop! I was not familiar with the Soul-Stirrers before this concert. I found some of their music on the internet, and thought that they sounded pretty good. I underestimated just how good they would be. The Flamingos were terrific. It was very nice that they took time to personally autograph shirts & CD's for their fans. The Drifters were maybe the best group ever to take the stage. (I don't mean just on this night, but anytime.) And they really had it going. My wife fell in love with the smooth sexy moves of their bass singer. Dion was great, although one or two of his song selections were not his best stuff. An awesome concert event in a wonderful venue (my first time at Fraze).
