About

Dion DiMucci, best known mononymously as Dion, is a world-renowned singer and songwriter with a career spanning decades. Best known for doo-wop jukebox classics like "Runaround Sue," "The Wanderer" and "Ruby Baby," Dion earned 39 Top 40 hits across the 1950s and '60s both as a solo artist and with the Belmonts and the Del-Satins. Many classic pop and rock musicians, such as Paul Simon, Lou Reed and Bryan Adams, cite Dion as a direct influence on their work.

Born in the Bronx in 1939, Dion found musical inspiration from his father, a vaudeville performer. Dion was also drawn to the blues, doo-wop and country music, particularly that of Hank Williams. In the early days of his career, Dion sang in local clubs around the Bronx and on street corners. In 1957, Dion was teamed up with Bob and Gene Schwartz to form doo-wop group the Belmonts, with Dion singing lead vocals. Together, they toured with Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper, and Frankie Sardo. In 1959, Dion narrowly escaped tragedy when he declined to join the other performers on a flight to the next tour stop, opting instead to take the bus. The plane crashed, killing all on board.

In 1960, Dion checked into rehab for heroin addiction. Subsequently, he pursued a solo career and released his first solo album, Alone With Dion, in 1961. Later that same year, Dion recorded "Runaround Sue" (co-written by Ernie Maresca) with the Del-Satins--the single was a smash, hitting No. 1 and selling over a million copies. Dion also found significant fame via "The Wanderer," a B-side to "The Majestic" and also written by Maresca. The same year, Dion performed around the world and appeared in Columbia Pictures' musical film Twist Around The Clock. He signed with Columbia the following year.

From 1965 on, Dion began performing more blues-driven material and teamed up with a new group, the Wanderers, featuring former Belmonts bandmate Carlo Mastrangelo on drums. In 1966, Dion reunited with the Belmonts, recording one LP, Together Again.

By the late 1960s, Dion began singing predominantly Christian material, recording Dick Holler's "Abraham, Martin and John" in response to the decade's assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. The song was enormously successful, selling over one million copies and was certified gold.

Dion spent the 1970s and part of the 80s recording contemporary Christian music. He also reunited with the Belmonts in 1972, releasing a live album Reunion: Live At Madison Square Garden. In 1984, Dion won the GMA Dove Award, also known as the Christian Music Award, for the 1983 album I Put Away My Idols. He was also nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Vocal Performance, Male for the same album. In 1987, Dion published his autobiography, The Wanderer: Dion's Story.

In 1989, Dion was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was introduced by Lou Reed. Later, in 2002, Dion was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for "Runaround Sue." Dion's 2006 album of blues and country standards, Bronx in Blue, was nominated for a Grammy and peaked at No. 2 on the Top Blues Albums chart.

Over the past 20 years, Dion has stayed extremely busy, releasing more than 10 solo studio albums, including 2007's Son of Skip James, 2020's Blues With Friends, and 2021's Stomping Ground, which became Dion's second No. 1 blues album. He has also collaborated with the likes of Joe Bonamassa, Van Morrison, Jeff Beck, Paul Simon, and Bruce Springsteen.

    Dion Delivers

by JoJo on 7/26/22NYCB Theatre at Westbury - Westbury

This had to be one of the best of the 500+ concerts that I've attended through the years. At 83 years of age, Dion's voice is as amazing as ever. He played a great mix of all his quintessential hits and newer tunes. The level of talent that this Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member possesses is truly remarkable. I mean, who in the world gets the likes of Billy Gibbons, Bruce Springsteen, Boz Scaggs, Eric Clapton, G.E. Smith, Jimmy Vivino, Joe Bonamassa, Keb' Mo, Mark Knopfler, Patty Scialfa, Peter Frampton, Rickie Lee Jones and Sonny Landreth to join them on an album during Covid (or any other time). His touring band was also world class. I was especially taken by the sax player, Arno Hecht, who has played with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Robert Plant, James Brown, Tom Waits, Iggy Pop, Ray Charles, BB King, The Allman Brothers and Joe Cocker, to name just a few. All in all, just a great night of music with a man who has seen it all, and is as humble as he is talented.

    Never Gets Old

by D. B. on 7/26/22NYCB Theatre at Westbury - Westbury

Dion was everything you hoped he would be. Sings the great oldies and gives us some new things too. Hope it wasn't really a farewell tour. You can't help but sing along. Band is great behind him as well. God bless and hope he's around for another 83 years.

    Dion - The Best

by Geo on 7/26/22NYCB Theatre at Westbury - Westbury

There is a reason for Dion being in The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. 80+ yrs old & still puts on a full show. His voice is still great.

    Wanderer always returns home

by Kenny K on 7/26/22NYCB Theatre at Westbury - Westbury

Yo, first of all, Westbury is one of my favorite venues for concerts; it’s like having the performer in your living room. Dion has such a compelling history and rocking catalogue that, along with his wonderful charm (and wonderful backup band), we all are uplifted to a higher plane together.

    Dion Still Got It

by Evan G on 7/26/22NYCB Theatre at Westbury - Westbury

Concert Review- Dion NYCB Theater at Westbury (Westbury Music Fair) 7/23/22- You can sum this concert up in four words- "He still got it." Ageless and timeless at age 83, Dion is still creating great new music and gratefully, much of it blues oriented at that. In good voice and good spirits, the "King of New York" interspersed excellent and poignant new tunes with his classics, and the nearly sold-out crowd gave him a deserved hero's welcome and reaction. Simply put, it was a wonderful 90 or so minute show with no opening act, and he didn't need one. If there were a Mount Rushmore of living and still performing giants in their 80s, I'd have George Clinton, Buddy Guy, Bobby Rush, and Dion right on there. They're not living off their name and fame; they're still out there killing every time they step foot on stage. Dion. Man. Doesn't get much better. Bravo.

    RUN, DON'T WALK!!!

    by D. W. on 7/24/22

Long-time Dion fan. First time seeing him in concert. Was hesitant because of the negative comments about him seeing new songs. Broke down and got tix when they offered a deep discount. So glad I did. If you're looking for a Golden Oldies concert, this ain't it. Dion had a perfect mix of the old and the new. Every song was a gem. Loved singing along to the hits, and the new songs are fire!!! Dion has not lost his touch (or sex appeal), and every moment was thoroughly enjoyed. Hope this is only my first of many Dion concerts.
