Dio Brought Back to Life at L.A.'s Wiltern Theater
by DTFanFromLI on 7/4/19The Wiltern - Los AngelesWith the Dio Disciples as his backing band — basically the most recent incarnation of Dio with Craig Goldy on guitar, Simon Wright on Drums, Scott Warren on keyboards, and Bjorn Englen on bass — Ronnie James Dio returns, courtesy of a high-tech hologram who moves, emotes, looks, and, of course, sounds like RJD. In the show's setlist, the hologram performs in roughly half of the show, with the vocals behind handled by Tim 'Ripper' Owens and Oni Logan in a rotating situation. At one point, Owens and Logan duet and are accompanied by the hologram. Much has been made of the hologram being offensive to the legacy of RJD, but the truth is that the technology lends itself to many possibilities across a myriad of media. Additionally, for true Dio fans, this serves as a focused tribute show, unlike the dozens of various tribute shows with random members in the bands. In this case, we get the real Dio band, two skilled vocalists, and a revolutionary piece of audio-visual technology that is still in its infancy.
