Dio Brought Back to Life at L.A.'s Wiltern Theater

by DTFanFromLI on 7/4/19The Wiltern - Los Angeles

With the Dio Disciples as his backing band — basically the most recent incarnation of Dio with Craig Goldy on guitar, Simon Wright on Drums, Scott Warren on keyboards, and Bjorn Englen on bass — Ronnie James Dio returns, courtesy of a high-tech hologram who moves, emotes, looks, and, of course, sounds like RJD. In the show's setlist, the hologram performs in roughly half of the show, with the vocals behind handled by Tim 'Ripper' Owens and Oni Logan in a rotating situation. At one point, Owens and Logan duet and are accompanied by the hologram. Much has been made of the hologram being offensive to the legacy of RJD, but the truth is that the technology lends itself to many possibilities across a myriad of media. Additionally, for true Dio fans, this serves as a focused tribute show, unlike the dozens of various tribute shows with random members in the bands. In this case, we get the real Dio band, two skilled vocalists, and a revolutionary piece of audio-visual technology that is still in its infancy.

A True Memorial. This is no cash in.

by E. C. on 7/2/1920 Monroe Live - Grand Rapids

They moved event from Detroit to Grand Rapids. Luckily, I was off that day. There was this mix of suspicion, wonder, excitement, and technological ingenuity. Suspicious at the feelings of a cash grab. I wondered how this was going to turn out. Excitement was matched with hope. This wasn't a wasted time. The technical ingenuity was a really impressive feat. Pros: Musical selection, the visuals they used to make it feel like Dio was there. It seemed less like a hologram and more of a life-like video that is synced with a legitimate live performance. Tim Owens did a phenomenal job performing. There were some songs with the Dio hologram that was impressive to pull off. There were members who played with Dio while he was alive that was a mega plus. When they performed their solos it was full of vigor. Cons: I caught only 1 glitch. Singing trying to sync up with Dio, could come off forced. That only happened a few times. Overall, this is a spectacle worth seeing. Great job. I hope they do another.

    Amazing!!!

by E. on 7/1/19The Wiltern - Los Angeles

I had SO much fun at Dio returns. He’s the only concert I never got to see live so this may be as close as I’ll get. It’s a celebration of his music and legacy and pays respect to him and his fans. Oni and Ripper absolutely crush it on vocals and it’s a visual extravaganza. I’d do it all over again. Highly recommended 🤘🏻

    I was expecting something better!

    by M. B. on 7/1/19The Wiltern - Los Angeles

Band was very good, main singer awesome. Dio Hologram, looks like guitar hero computer image, small, cheap. Another younger singer was just advertising a energy drink every time and he just screamed songs. Overall the band and veteran singer saved the show
