DINOSAUR JR. IN CONCERT:

Dinosaur Jr. have a sound just as monstrously huge and playful as their name would suggest. Ticket buyers swoon for the monolithic volume, fuzzed-out riffs, tongue-in-cheek lyrics, and passionate angst these alt rock legends bring to the stage. Long-haired leader J. Mascis blasts out masterful licks and pummeling power chords in front of three amplifiers that tower menacingly over his head, bassist Lou Barlow pumps out killer jams as he thrashes around stage, and drummer Murph beats up his skins like he’s hammering against an anvil. These monsters of noisy alternative are sure to rock out on favorites like “Freak Scene”, “Little Fury Things”, and “Feel the Pain” whenever they bring their ferocious sound on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

The roots of Dinosaur Jr. lie in the Amherst, MA hardcore band Deep Wound, where guitarist/singer J. Mascis met bassist Lou Barlow. Following that band’s dissolution in 1984, the two reached out to fellow hardcore devotee Emmett Jefferson “Murph” Murphy III and formed a band. They dubbed themselves Dinosaur for their self-titled 1985 debut album, adding the Jr. diminutive later that year to distinguish themselves from a band of the same name. Their 1987 sophomore album You’re Living All Over Me became a major milestone in underground music, blending classic rock songcraft with outbursts of noisy feedback and punk angst. The band began to experience commercial success starting with the 1988 college radio hit “Freak Scene”, but Barlow departed to exercise more creative control in his lo-fi band Sebadoh. Original drummer Murph exited following 1991’s Green Mind, leaving Mascis the sole original member as Dinosaur Jr. continued to score hits into the ‘90s. In 2005 Mascis turned up at a Sebadoh concert to discuss a potential reunion, after which he and Barlow reached out to Murph. Since reuniting, the trio has released the powerful and critically acclaimed albums Beyond (2007), Farm (2009), and I Bet on Sky (2012). With their extensive catalog of old favorites and new gems, the group continues to be an earth-shaking force of nature at their concerts.

Ear-splitting sweetness... Pounding bass riffs, punctuated with screeching guitar fireworks. J Mascis served up some predictably wicked chops amidst the fuzzy sonic stew. When he was really jamming, he would back into his wall of Marshalls to feel the vibrations. As always, a tight and rocking show. I wished it could have gone for another hour or so, though my eardrums were thankful it ended when it did.

    a real punk rock show.

by bosko on 10/18/09The Pageant - St Louis

It was amazing. Dinosaur Jr. are a punk rock band that write simple 3 or 4 chord uplifting, emotional pop/punk songs, that also feature amazing guitar playing by J. Their music is real, and it brings people together, and I loved seeing them at the pageant because I was so close. Unlike the verizon wireless, tickets to the pageant are worth every penny. Go buy dinosaur jr.'s new cd now, I did, and it sounds fantastic.

Dinosaur Jr. rocked me to the core!

by ComradeK on 10/17/09Headliners Music Hall - Louisville

J was wailing on the guitar, Murph was beating the crap out of the drums, and Lou was bringing the thunder on the bass. I knew it was going to rock, but I was unprepared. It was freaking awesome! Now if I can just get my ears to stop ringing...

Dinosaur Jr. - Oh What a show

by WindyCityChet on 10/16/09Vic Theatre - Chicago

I wasn't sure what to expect. I remember a lot of their songs, but not sure that I can name more than a few. Wellm Dinosaur Jr. rocked the house. They played all their hits. Show was really loud (I mean really loud). If you think you liked a couple of their songs, I gaurantee you will love the entire show.

The sound at the Vic was terrible. You could barely make out the vocals for the majority of the show. The band sort of looked like they were being forced to play. I have never seen them live before and while I like their music, I would not go out of my way to see them again. All in all a pretty average show.

    Ear Bleeding Sanctuary!!

by VoodooChild on 10/16/09Vic Theater - Chicago

D.J. Opened their set loud and hard. When I first laid my eyes on his 3 half stacks I knew it was gonna be everything I hoped for. I read a few reviews of people complaining because the guitar is too loud and the sound levels are wrong...these are the reasons you go to see Dinosaur Jr. LIVE in concert. If you wanna hear them play just like the album, forget it. J's solos and the bands durability make their songs unique and different every time. I stood about 12 feet away from the 3 half stacks and J...My ears are ringing like there is no tommorow and I love it. The Poster Art for this chicago gig was a real bonus, I scored a guitar pick from the roadie and pasted it on this lively artwork. If you wanna hear D.J. play at a comfortable and understandable sound level listen to it @ home. Come to the show if you wanna feel it in your bones.

    Unholy Volume!

by SoundsofLaughter on 10/15/09The Pageant - St Louis

Dinosaur Jr is a briliant band on record and legendary for their live, excruciatingly loud sound. The band played songs from their sturdy new album, a few from the Lou-less albums ( "Thumb" "Get Me" and "Feel the Pain") all of which were surprising and awesome to hear from the one and only line up of J, Lou, and Murph. But the band only played "Raisins" "In a Jar" and "Forget the Swan" from the early albums. Two songs I would have loved to hear (although "Jar" and "Swan" were incredible) were "Severed Lips" and "Sludgefeast" both of which J and Lou offered to us as an encore. J took all his guitar heroics to the max and fried our minds with his epic solos and at one point had four guitars laying around him squelling with feedback. J said maybe three things to the audience, all of which were hilarious (best was his deadpan "whoo".) The band sounded great and put a big smile on my face just to see the guys up there. Great show. Two thumbs up. Oh yeah, bring earplugs but take them out just to experience the enormous volume and power of this incredibly unique band.

    Should probably break up again

by Stricks on 10/12/09Newport Music Hall - Columbus

Although the idea of Dinosaur Jr. getting back together for a concert sounded great I was sorely disappointed by Saturday's concert. Never once greeting the fans or showing appreciation for those who paid almost 30 dollars for a ticket, Dinosaur Jr. half-heatedly went into their set list. The vocals were almost impossible to hear over the excruciatingly loud guitars. I love concerts but if I can't hear a single word being sung, something is definitely wrong. Although the finale of the night was somewhat lively, the rest of the show was basically a boring mess.

    Dinosaur Jr.

by Rat999 on 10/12/09Newport Music Hall - Columbus

Sound sucked. Guitars were too loud, you had to listen for the bass and the vocals were inaudible. They played for only an hour and a half. They could have rocked out for much longer. Coming from Athens I hate getting gouged for over priced drinks. $6.75 for a Maker's and cola? Could of had two for that price here.

Dino rocked as always, Middle East staff ??

by Ogie on 10/5/09Middle East - Cambridge

Just 2 observations on the Middle East. I love seeing shows there, but a couple of poor performances on Saturday night. Not by Dino, they were great on both nights. 1. Bartender downstairs. Dude had a bad attitude, obviously didn't want to be there and seemed to be taking it out on everyine by going extra slow. It happens i guess, i was kinda hoping his manager would see him and straighten him out. 2. The asian girl taking tickets upstairs. not sure if it was her first night, or her first show period. She didn't understand that when you tear the ticket, you're supposed to give half back to the ticket holder. I'm not kidding, she didn't understand this. A quote: "you have a wristband, you don't need the ticket" you can't even make this stuff up.

Dinosaur Jr. are playing louder than ever!

by rockrgirl8 on 10/5/09Northern Lights - Clifton Park

They've always been loud - but are now loud loud louder. They are also playing so well with each other - really strong set and great, tight playing. Not much chitchat - none with each other (not a big surprise) and very little with the audience, except when Lou was trying to fill in space when Murph took off at one point and noone knew where he went. Most of the set was from the new album, which is pretty killer, though they did please the crowd with some oldies and goodies - my personal favorite being "Freak Scene."

J Mascis is my Guitar Hero

by Musicophile on 10/3/09Middle East - Cambridge

Saw these guys over ten years ago, one of my favorite concerts of all time, and they didn't disappoint this time around! J Mascis' guitar shredding is as unbelievable and spellbinding as ever. Wish I could have gone to night two as well!

    Earbleeding Dinosaur Jr!!!!!!!!!!!

    by Aero13 on 7/17/09Troubadour - West Hollywood

Anxiety, in a good way, is what i felt days before the show was up. The whole long drive to the Troub i was excited to see my favorite band perform in a rather intimate setting. To my surprise as i was waitning in line i saw J walk about three feet away from me!! Enough of that. The perfromance was just amazing. J let his soul take over and play those awesome guitar licks while Lou played bass awesomely crazy. Let's not forget about Murph. Oh man!!! his drums skills are so freakin emazing!!! I just felt a great vibe from the moment they started playing Tarpit until the very last second of Sludgefeast. there was one thing that was king of bugging, it was not Dino J but the venue. the mixing was kinda crappy at times because the vocals would be swallowed by the band's loud, but great, playing and this one crazy, perhaps drunk, lady that randomly stepped in front of my girlfriend and i and started swirling back and forth making things uncomfortable. but other than that, i would totally see them again.
