DINOSAUR JR. IN CONCERT:

Dinosaur Jr. have a sound just as monstrously huge and playful as their name would suggest. Ticket buyers swoon for the monolithic volume, fuzzed-out riffs, tongue-in-cheek lyrics, and passionate angst these alt rock legends bring to the stage. Long-haired leader J. Mascis blasts out masterful licks and pummeling power chords in front of three amplifiers that tower menacingly over his head, bassist Lou Barlow pumps out killer jams as he thrashes around stage, and drummer Murph beats up his skins like he’s hammering against an anvil. These monsters of noisy alternative are sure to rock out on favorites like “Freak Scene”, “Little Fury Things”, and “Feel the Pain” whenever they bring their ferocious sound on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

The roots of Dinosaur Jr. lie in the Amherst, MA hardcore band Deep Wound, where guitarist/singer J. Mascis met bassist Lou Barlow. Following that band’s dissolution in 1984, the two reached out to fellow hardcore devotee Emmett Jefferson “Murph” Murphy III and formed a band. They dubbed themselves Dinosaur for their self-titled 1985 debut album, adding the Jr. diminutive later that year to distinguish themselves from a band of the same name. Their 1987 sophomore album You’re Living All Over Me became a major milestone in underground music, blending classic rock songcraft with outbursts of noisy feedback and punk angst. The band began to experience commercial success starting with the 1988 college radio hit “Freak Scene”, but Barlow departed to exercise more creative control in his lo-fi band Sebadoh. Original drummer Murph exited following 1991’s Green Mind, leaving Mascis the sole original member as Dinosaur Jr. continued to score hits into the ‘90s. In 2005 Mascis turned up at a Sebadoh concert to discuss a potential reunion, after which he and Barlow reached out to Murph. Since reuniting, the trio has released the powerful and critically acclaimed albums Beyond (2007), Farm (2009), and I Bet on Sky (2012). With their extensive catalog of old favorites and new gems, the group continues to be an earth-shaking force of nature at their concerts.

Awesome! Will be seeing Dino Jr. again!

by Hooch on 9/22/22Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - Austin

THIS IS WHAT I THOUGHT OF THE VENUE. Navigating the venue was kinda tricky because it was so big. (I mean it was an auditorium.) But if you just ask the staff for directions and show them your ticket they'll give you directions on what to do. Plus, all of them were really nice and very helpful. This was at the Austin City Limits Auditorium. HERE'S WHAT I THINK OF THE BAND'S PERFORMANCE. If you like the records and are a fan of Dinosaur Jr. you'll love seeing them live. The songs they performed most of the time, matched or surpassed the quality of the songs off their respective albums. The band was very nice to the crowd and Lou Barlow (the bassist) even offered earplugs to member of the audience who was covering his ears because of how loud it was. OH YEAH, another thing. Dinosaur Jr. Are VERY loud so definitely bring earplugs if you ever plan to go see them live. The crowd was very nice too. Me and a friend of mine went into a mosh pit at one point during the concert and it was a really good time! Obviously, you can't expect to go into a mosh pit without getting hit or shoved around. So it's only natural that you would get knocked down occasionally, but when you did the people in there would almost instantly pick you up and check if you were alright. OVERALL It was a really good time. The band played really well. The audience loved it. Definitely go see them if you ever get the chance. Also if you didn't read through the whole review, THEY ARE VERY LOUD. GET EARPLUGS.

    Fast LOUD Rules

by SamDam on 9/21/22Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - Austin

Love the setlist for starters. You’re Living All over Me album was heavily represented. One of the best rock albums of all time. New songs were good to. Don’t find that too often from an 80s band. Dino Jr still has IT! My only issue was the volume. Don’t remember ACL being so loud. The subtleties were lost, kind of like a Van Halen concert at a hockey arena on the 1984 tour. Will bring ear plugs to my next ACL show.

    Dinosaur Jr show

by Lori on 9/21/22Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - Austin

I was warned shortly before the show that Dinosaur Jr is loud, and that I should wear ear plugs. Glad I did! So loud, and so good! Way to go Moody Theater, for letting Dinosaur Jr push the volume up. But if you are planning to see them live, do wear ear plugs, lol.

    Not Good Sound System

by RecordCollectorEssa on 9/13/22The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

The volume of the instruments was a lot higher than the voice of J Mascis.

    Awesome!

by jesimuka on 6/13/22State Theatre - Portland

The show was amazing! Fun& relaxed venue. They were able to scan our tickets easily with the app. We could sit anywhere we chose or walk around to the bars and lower level. I also went up to the front of the pit during the last few songs and got the set list at the end!

    Stellar Show!

by D.W. on 2/21/22The Fillmore - San Francisco

After not being able to find my vaccination card on my phone and thinking I wouldn’t be allowed into the show, I found it! Got a drink and went directly to the front of the stage. J Mascis’ guitar shredding is an amazing sight. To see him play up close in person at a venue like The Fillmore is a true gift. The only downside was the vocals were completely out of the mix the entire night but the crowd didn’t seem to notice or care. Even without the vocals it was a Stellar Show!! Thank you Fillmore!

    Too loud too old

by Songlvr on 2/19/22The Fillmore - San Francisco

Pre-Covid I went to shows a lot, so I don’t think this is because I’m too old. Earplugs would have helped but I forgot them. Volume could have been turned down on instruments for the small space. Ears still ringing days later. That’s wasn’t the main issue with the sound though. The engineer needed to bring up the vocals, which he seemed to do once but not enough. Moved from in front of stage to the back and that helped a little.

    Great concert!

by Christocalese on 2/8/22The Depot - Salt Lake City

It was so nice to finally go to a real concert with real music played through real, loud amps! J Mascis and the band rocked and nearly melted my face off!

    An avalanche of sound

by kade on 2/8/22The Depot - Salt Lake City

Dinosaur Jr should be slowed down and boring right now and the just aren't. I was blown away by how much sound and power these three guys were funneling through the venue. The played a great mix of old and new songs. The intensity and consistency were 100% and they were a rare band that actually outplayed the recorded versions of their music. Great show.

    Awesome show

by LP on 12/12/21House of Blues Boston - Boston

Venue was great - nice small club in Boston. It was like going back to the nineties! Dinosaur Jr. still sound the same which is obviously wicked important. Show was tight and super fun! Hope to catch them again sometime soon.

    Better communication on timing please

by Wichita Falls on 11/30/21House of Blues Boston - Boston

The ticket said the concert was at 6:30. In reality, that's when the doors openned. Better make clear the start time of the band so that i am not wasting my time standing around for a band that was just mea.

    Meh.

    by Minimoog56 on 11/19/219:30 CLUB - Washington

Went out of curiosity to see Dino Jr. after all these years. Loud, heartfelt but limited development musically. I guess Jay and Lou are filed under A for effort. A lot of energy but all the songs sounded the same. Older songs from the first record they played demonstrated this compared to the ones off the new record. Fun night but despite the lurches into sonic excess whimsy felt like the first night of a long tour. Highlights were the hello to Lou’s sister and neice. Glad to be back at 9:30 but the space was oversold for this sold out show and a lots of young kids were charging the front of the stage and spilling their beers on me so I did not feel like this is a very safe place pandemic wise.

    Sound was off

by BillyHunt on 11/16/21The Masquerade - Heaven - Atlanta

We were in the balcony. We could hear no vocals even when they talked. The fans upstairs started chanting turn up the vocals. I finally went downstairs to talk to the sound guy. Talked to the lighting guy first and he said " The sound is preset by the band". Found the sound guy. His excuse was J. Mascis was "singing softly". Are you kidding me? No help from sound guy, went back upstairs, watched the rest of the show. Before the first encore we went downstairs and at that time we could hear the vocals somewhat better. I don't know if it was because we were in the balcony or they adjusted the vocals by then. We were extremely disappointed.

    Old Guitar Wizard

by Bridgework on 11/21/19Baltimore Soundstage - Baltimore

Mascis passed his 10,000 hours in the 90s no doubt, and represents a species in decline. The guitar master. But he has continued on to the point where he looks and sounds like a guitar wizard. Even between songs he just plays and plays. I’d go five stars, but the sound was not so good.
