I enjoyed Devin Townsend. Enjoyed the performance, loved the banter. However, I do wish he'd had more direction. I understand it was his first time performing without backing tracks, but the show seemed quite disjointed. He has a HUGE catalog, and wants to touch all the bases, but I think overall, it ruins the quality of the performance, because it has a real lack of theme and direction.
Because he intends on doing mellower stuff on the second leg of the tour, I was anticipating a much heavier feel, but left sort of disappointed. Sure, he did a Strapping Young Lad song, but it was a far cry from the cruise show he recently did. The show frequently went from one direction to a completely different one, and it left a feeling like it was lost.
I think he'd do a lot better in the future if he picked a mood for the show and stuck with it. If you wanna play a mellow show, stick to mellow stuff. If you want to do a fun poppy show, stick to that. If you wanna stick to a rock or metal show, stay with that material. Otherwise, it doesn't give the audience a chance to settle in. Just my two cents.
Haken was ok. Contortionist was good, except for the singer. I've seen banana peels on my kitchen counter with more charisma.
