Detroit Red Wings History

Founded in 1926, the Red Wings are one of the NHL's Original Six franchises. The team has captured 11 Stanley Cup Championships, most recently in 2008, as well as six conference championships and 19 division titles. As of 2023, the Red Wings have the most Stanley Cup trophies of any U.S.-based NHL franchise. Eight Red Wings players have their jersey numbers hanging from the Little Caesars Arena rafters: Leonard Patrick “Red” Kelly, Terry Sawchuk, Nicklas Lidström, Ted Lindsay, Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, Sid Abel, and Steve Yzerman.

The Red Wings were purchased in 1982 by Mike and Marian Ilitch, who invested their family savings in 1959 to open the first Little Caesars store in a Detroit suburb.

  • AWESOME!!!!

    by WingsFan3473 on 4/12/17Joe Louis Arena - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

Checked off a bucket list Item, with a game at the JOE!!! April 8, 2017. The last original six game to be played at the Joe. We didn't win but I was overcome with the atmosphere, and the friendliness of the fans. Wish I had more time and games to see there.

  • Very sad to see the Joe go

    by guitargirl597 on 4/8/17Joe Louis Arena - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

As a Blackhawks fan it was of course a bummer that they did not win that night. However, I was so grateful to have gotten to see one game at the Joe Louis Arena before it is gone forever. It really is a shame to be losing such a great venue! It was comfortable, it had character, and there really wasn't a bad seat. Overall a very enjoyable experience.

  • Best game all year!!!

Ordering tickets were easy... Printing was easy... glad I got to see the wings before they leave the joe...

  • Exciting game!

by Vbanyash on 4/6/17Joe Louis Arena - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

I have been to the "Joe" many times and love watching the Redwings. This game was one of the best...lots of great goals, loved the intense play of sudden death ot, and the shoot out was fantastic! I will miss the Joe, but will continue to watch and support my beloved Wings at the new Little Ceasar Arena.

  • End of an era

by Alliandre on 4/4/17Joe Louis Arena - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

The history of the Joe oozes from every corner of the rink. Playing a rival from across the river. A packed house with fans of both teams and a great game lots of goals scored. It was a great night. The reason for only four stars is the seats are for people that stand no more than 5 ft. tall and weigh less than 100 lbs. I am looking forward to the new arena and a continuation of a great tradition.

  • Exciting Game

    by LF26 on 3/28/17Joe Louis Arena - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

A very exciting game. Plenty of action. I really liked sitting so close. The only negative was that I could not see the action on the same side I was sitting on at the other end. If you want to be at the end where your team shoots twice, sit behind the goal, not on the side.

  • Its the Wings at the Joe!

    by bj49615 on 3/27/17Joe Louis Arena - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

Love the Wings (though I would prefer to see more wins). And I love the Joe (don't want to leave). Maybe the best hockey venue in USA.

Great game and glad we got to see the Wings play at the Joe before they move to the new arena.

The Joe is a special place for hockey fans and it will be missed.

  • Last time at the Joe

    by Fras915 on 3/15/17Joe Louis Arena - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

The wings lost but that didn't really matter to us. For years my family of 5 has been coming to the Joe for Red Wings hockey. This was our last experience Ever at the Joe. We drank some beers, had some laughs, and got plenty of pictures. At the end of the night it didn't matter who won or lost, we all enjoyed our last time at the Joe. Thanks for the memories!

  • Farewell to the Joe visit

    by 5minutemajor on 3/15/17Joe Louis Arena - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

Sad to see the Joe go. Many memories had to take my kids there to experience the atmosphere. Travelers from Texas.

  • The Wings are always fun to watch...

by Jollyjeeper on 3/15/17Joe Louis Arena - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

Except this season. They are an AHL team trying to compete at the NHL level. The real problem I have is that they moved the game from 12:30 to 7 on a Sunday night!! I had a big weekend planned with my kids, taking them to their first Red Wings game. Moving the game changed what was a carefully planned weekend experience into an absolute mess. Love the game, but I think the NHL and the Wings are starting to forget that they are nothing without their devoted fans.

  • What A Rivalry

    by HawksGal80 on 3/14/17Joe Louis Arena - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

Went to the Detroit vs Chicago game as I am a huge Hawks fan but wanted to see Joe Louis before it closed. Arena is cute and not a bad seat in the house. My only complaint was security at this stadium. They were rude and I also lost my purse because it was "too big." I travel to stadiums to catch hockey games all the time and never once have I been told that I can't get into a stadium because this purse is too big. Detroit needs to get there stuff together and also hire security that is somewhat nice and considerate. Food is also below par but whatever.

Saw the Blackhawks play the Red Wings for the last time at Joe Louis Arena. It was a fun experience, even though the Blackhawks lost.

  • Sorry we met this way Joe

by BrenPenn on 3/13/17Joe Louis Arena - DetroitRating: 1 out of 5

Picture it. You were the hero for finding tickets to the Joe for the never experienced venue your hockey rabid wife was told she should not miss before the wrecking ball takes aim this season's end. You managed to find a weekend game (almost) with your team, the Blackhawks, the opponent in a legendary rivalry. You work around the clock and have a 1/2 day off to make the drive to the Motor City. Can't get away from work early enough, so a hurried 5 hour drive hoping to make the last of the second period. Bitter cold invites you as you arrive earlier than expected but exhausted and looking forward to the legendary venue. You run your valuables to your room and catch a shuttle from the hotel to the Joe. As you reach the door you are told go back outside into the freezing cold and get rid of the Blackhawks mini purse your wife downsized to hold her essentials of being a woman. Too big. We empty it with freezing hands, stunned being sent outside with no line to speak of. I roll up the small bag and tuck it neatly in my pocket and we go for the door again. Oh no, you'll have to get rid of that. We are forced to throw away our tiny bag or hail a cab back to the hotel. No sympathy, no manners, no class. Thanks for the welcome, Joe crew! Thanks for the experience, you truly set the tone!

  • O for the days of Yzerman and Lidstrom

by revgreg on 2/24/17Joe Louis Arena - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

It's always fun to see a Wings game. Unfortunately the streak is over. The Wings can't score goals. We lost 3-1, but we played poorly. It was very nice to get the Delvecchio statue, and see him honored. Ii will not miss the steps up to the entrance in the least!
