Detroit Pistons History

One of the most storied franchises in NBA history, the Pistons moved to Detroit in 1957 from Fort Wayne, Indiana, where they were owned by Fred Zollner and known as the Fort Wayne (Zollner) Pistons. The Pistons played at Olympia Stadium for four years, then moved to Cobo Arena. In 1974, Bill Davidson purchased the team, and in 1978, the team began playing at the Pontiac Silverdome.

Prior to the start of the 1988–89 season, the Pistons moved to play at The Palace of Auburn Hills and won back-to-back NBA Championships in 1989 and 1990 with the "Bad Boys" teams. Detroit's "Goin' to Work" squad picked up the franchise's third NBA Championship in 2004 in the midst of making six consecutive trips to the Eastern Conference Finals.

In addition to the numerous team accomplishments, the Pistons also have had a list of great players and coaches who have contributed to the team's long history of success. Detroit has retired jersey numbers for Chuck Daly (2), Isiah Thomas (11), Joe Dumars (4), Dave Bing (21), Bob Lanier (16), Dennis Rodman (10), Vinnie Johnson (15), Bill Laimbeer (40), Ben Wallace (3), Chauncey Billups (1) and Richard Hamilton (32). Daly, Thomas, Dumars, Bing, Lanier, Rodman and Davidson all have been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

    The game

by beck24 on 11/5/09The Palace of Auburn Hills - Auburn Hills

I did not like the fact that the free prizes being given out never once came to our section. They came near ours but not at ours. I am also upset that you gave out magents as your free gift when other days its jerseys and bobble heads. I did not like my seats and did not realize we were in teh uperzone as our tickets were epxensive to sit way up there and we wer blocked by a camera station that was currently not in use. Over all I enjoyed the game but was not completely happy with the sitting arrangements and was upset to be sitting so far up.

    Pistons VS Magic

by Debbra1 on 11/4/09The Palace of Auburn Hills - Auburn Hills

It was awesome - it was really cold in the Palace - and we had to keep our coats on the whole time and that was not fun - BUT we enjoyed ourselves. We were very disappointed that RIP and Tayshawn were NOT playing - we drove 2.5 hrs during the week to see them and that was a disappointment.

    Pistons in GR disappoints again

by Anonymous on 10/14/09Van Andel Arena - Grand Rapids

While Van Andel Arena is a great place to see a HOCKEY game or concert, basketball is not their specialty. With a court that hasn't been updated in 10(?) years, minimal contact with the players, no fan interaction, and ticket prices that compare to the regular season, I'd much rather go to a HS or local college game and save $50. But if you can't get to Detroit, this is it.

    #1 Piston Fan!!

by ReddBoy on 10/14/09Van Andel Arena - Grand Rapids

The game was very exciting..I enjoyed seeing the Pistons and Wizards play! I am a Piston fan and I also like other individual players from other teams such as Arenas..Kobe..LeBron..D-Wade..D-Rose...and more. The game was intense and I wished the Pistons would've won but the ball swung different last night. From McGee big dunks to Arenas big 3's they sealed the victory by 3 pts. Will Bynum played great D" on Gilbert Arenas and he attacked the basket with strong moves. Prince got off to a good start as well as Rip. Big Ben..it was good to see him back in a Piston uniform. I wore my Billups jersey to the game, Detroit is not the same without him!!

    Fun, exciting

by Sheedfan on 10/14/09Van Andel Arena - Grand Rapids

The Meijer Basketball Classic featuring the Detroit Pistons and the Washington Wizards was a good time! As always, it is nice to see the "stars" play as well as the rookies/bench. The tickets were fairly priced, however with Michigan's economy, they could have been lowered.... a lot of seats were empty and could have been filled. The game was low-key yet exciting. This is my 4th time going and I will definitely go again

    Pistons game was fantastic

by piston32 on 10/14/09Van Andel Arena - Grand Rapids

I really enjoyed going to the Van Andel Arena for the Pistons game because there really is no bad seating there. I did have really good seating though so that also really helped. I could almost reach out and touch them. All the help there were really nice as well.

by Workingdad on 10/14/09Van Andel Arena - Grand Rapids

I brought my 5 boys. $185. We felt that we were far removed from the game. If they could include that up deck. Some of the folks that sit up there are just as big of fans if not bigger fans than some that sit court side. They just don't have the bank account to support that. To sit way out of the way and to see all the empty seats. They should let people upgrade if they dont sell them. Let the fans move up to the better seats. From our seats we couldnt even see the big screen The game its self was great. Any time to see the Pistons even if they loose is a good time.
