    Amazing Show!

by Pineburr on 2/25/10Patriot Center - Fairfax

This was one of the best shows I have ever been to. High on fire and Converge opened (Converge is horrible...), then Mastodon sort of set the standard for stage presence. Hearing the opening theme for Metalocalypse was one of the most high-energy points of any concert I have seen. Their setlist was perfect (a mix of season 1 and 2 songs). When they finally left the stage, the chant of "Fansong" was nearly deafening, then a few minutes later they came back and played the absolute best closing song in history. Absolutely brilliant!

    Dethklok is pretty metal!

by nicksnickname on 12/7/09House of Blues Boston - Boston

I wasn't sure what I was getting into, seeing a cartoon band live, but the show was great! Dethklok videos were on the big screen behind the band, which took the attention off of the actual band playing and the fact that they don't look anything like the members in the cartoon... not to mention that there were only 3 members as opposed to the 5 on TV. The problem with seeing a "cartoon band" live is, since the charecters aren't real, you can't really stray from a scripted performance. There will be no solo's or on stage banter (which can also be a good thing). Either way, the band rocked. I heard all the songs that I wanted to hear. And the exclusive cartoons were funny and enjoyable. Good show!

    Dethklok is awesome

by Anonymous on 11/1/09House of Blues Boston - Boston

Dethklok is one of the best metal band I've ever seen, which is kind of ironic seeing how their not really a band but they still were unbelieveable. Mastodon was a bit of a let down, really low energy not too particularly great but Dethklok got the crowd moving again when they came on. Also the comedy videos in the middle of the set were hilarious. Definitely worth it to see this show

Mastodon is the most boring band ever.

by Saidxthexgun on 10/29/09House of Blues Boston - Boston

Converge FANTASTIC. Mastodon TERRIBLE. just when you thought it was over, they began their torture again. for nearly an hour and a half their boring set went on. Dethklok was a great headliner, unfortunitely they played less time than mastodon.

Mastodon and Dethklok were Absolutely Amazing

by NathanExplosion on 10/29/09House of Blues Boston - Boston

If you've never seen Mastodon you have to see them. They put on such an amazing show that if you have the opportunity to see them, you must go. And Dethklok was phenomenal. Not only did they play an amazing set list, but in between songs they had some video's up of Metalocalypse. Just an awesome show

    Dethklok and Mastodon were awesome

by Kelbaenor on 10/29/09House of Blues Boston - Boston

Converge was terrible but that's to be expected since they suck. However, Mastodon played the entirety of Crack the Skye, all with awesome artwork, animation and film behind them. They were sick. Dethklok's show worked really well, with the clips from the show, as well as the concert specific clips they made. Gene Hoglan is a beast of a drummer, and Brendon shreds it up. Awesome show all around, but if you can skip the openers I'd recommend it. I only wish Dethklok had closed with Go Forth and Die, seems like it would have been the perfect ending.

    too many bands

by whydoweneedanickname on 10/29/09House of Blues Boston - Boston

high on fire wasn't good, converge was good for 2 songs, then all their songs were the same, mastadon was awesome, and dethklok was awesome what sucks is that it was on a school night so i had a curfew, so i only got to see one song of the band i came to see, dethklok and the 20 minutes in between each band didn't help, why can't they pick out their guitars while the other band is playing or stuff like that overall, should have cut it down a band or spent less time between bands

    Dethklok & Mastodon

by MikeWro on 10/29/09House of Blues Boston - Boston

Saw Dethklok and Mastodon at the House of Blues in Boston MA on Wednesday 28 October 2009. This was the only original-scheduled date at the time plans were made to attend, but they also added a show the previous night as well. Understand first that even tho' I'm a headbanger from way back in the day, it was my middle son - who is into 21st Century Metal in many of its various forms - who mentioned that he wanted to see Mastodon the next time they came through New England, in order that it'd be a longer set than when he saw them at a past Mayhem Fest. None of his friends who would've been interested in attending were available, nor other friends who aren't into Mastodon's style of Metal. Personally, I like the song "Colony Of Birchmen" (which unfortunately was not performed at this show), so I agreed I'd go with him. Later we discovered "Dethklok" would also be "performing" (yeah, right, like I'm gonna pay to watch a cartoon)... and that they would actually be headlining! More on that later... High on Fire started of the show, and while their style is fairly simple, the bassist's use of fuzz and a 12-string bass negated the requisite second guitarist (they are a three-piece band). Converge was the second act; they recently released their newest album, and were promoting that. I usually don't sit and listen to 'core bands for relaxation; any type of 'core is meant to be experienced live. Much moshing occurred during this set. Mastodon... well, what can I say. These guys don't talk between songs... they just play the next one. And they played a lot. They did everything off "Crack The Skye," with old Rasputin black-and-white movie scenes played behind them. If you like Mastodon, you will be wise to catch them on this tour. Dethklok was an interesting proposition in the abstract. I had no idea what to expect. I hoped it wasn't like a Gorillas show where the real musicians play offstage to the cartoon on the screen (BTW, I don't like The Gorillas anyway). Then two weeks before the show I found out that former Zappa guitarist Mike Keneally was one of the touring musicians, and being a native SoCal dude who lived in San Diego when fellow San Diegan Keneally auditioned for the vacancy in Zappa's band after Steve Vai left, well, I had to check this out. I mean, I was going anyway for Mastodon, so this was icing on the cake. What I can say here is that the four-piece "group" executed highly technical playing flawlessly, and I was well impressed. All in all, this was must-see stuff.

Missed High on Fire, but Converge was tight. brutal and ferocious. Mastodon was great as usual, but I would have rather had a good mix of their material rather than all of Crack the Skye and just a couple from their other albums. Dethklok was tight and entertaining. Overall I'd definitely recommend.

    Face-melting Awesomeness!

by CFillhart on 10/27/09Washington Avenue Armory - Albany

It's been far too long since my last metal show, so I was certainly ready when the time to see Dethklok and Mastadon came around. I wasn't aware that there was going to be opening bands for this show. Had I known, I probably wouldn't have gotten to the show on time. The show opened with the less than original, High on Fire. Their music was generic at best and the lead singer had a bit of an Iggy Pop complex from the way he looked from my seat in the bleachers. Sadly, I actually found time for a nap during their set, so I may be a bit biased on this one. Next up was Converge. I'd actually heard of this band, but as their set unfolded I wished I hadn't heard them at all. As a friend of mine at the show mentioned, as the set went on, the similarities between the lead singer and that of a pterodactyl were uncanny. Again, nothing new here kids. As the stage was being set for Mastadon, the crowd was treated to a suprise cartoon of Dethklok with guest star Edie Riggs from the game Brutal Legend, which was set up to play at the show. After that, Mastadon came out to much deserved applause. I was suprised to see the similarities between a Mastadon show and that of Tool. The videos playing during their set mimicked that of the story telling present in a majority of the bands music. Frankly, Mastadon music is rather complex to play, so the band doesn't have the most active live show, so the videos were an interesting alternative to the band having to jump around on stage. Finally, Dethklok came out to much fanfare from the crowd. Probably the most interesting thing about Dethklok is the stark contrast between the actual muscians for the live tour and that of the cartoon characters that portray them on the Adult Swim cartoon show, Metalocalypse. Where the cartoons display a stereotypical "metal-ness" with long hair, combat boots, dark clothing and stage make-up, the actual muscians were rather stoic and uncharacteristically "metal". Luckily, this didn't detract for the music, which was bone-crunchingly brutal at every moment. Songs in their set with accompanied by music videos of the cartoon characters creating a sort of second concert going on in the background. This was good and bad in certain ways. It was bad in the fact that it distracted you from paying attention to the actual musicians, but good at the same time as, again, the band didn't have the most lively set due to their musics comlexity. When all was said and done, it was certainly one of the best metal shows I've ever been to. That's saying a lot, too. I've seen metal bands of the like of Slipknot, Slayer and Marilyn Manson, which all had amazingly brutal sets of their own. But, Dethklok isn't just and metal band, they're fake. This was a band created just as much as an homage to metal bands as they were a means of poking fun at the most paramount cliches of the genre. So, to see something that was spawned most likely as just a joke amongst friends turn into something so unapolegetically metal and genre defining is certainly worth the ticket price alone. 4/5 Stars: The only thing that takes away from this show are the less than stellar opening acts. Unless you know of these bands and/or like generic metal or hardcore, come to the show a couple hours late. Venue: The Armorey wasn't a bad venue. It's basically a basketball court for the local Albany Patroons, but it served the purpose well. I was warned by a friend that the acoustics in the Armorey were horrible, but as I was wearing earplugs nearly the entire time, this didn't annoy me. They also served alcohol, which never hurts at a metal show.

    amazing

by iAmBaSsMaN107 on 10/26/09Washington Avenue Armory - Albany

The Armory is far to echoy when you're sitting or standing close to the stage, but as you go fartherback it sounds better. Dethklok however, was astoundingly good. Definitly the best concert i've been to in years and years. Thankfully the next show i see will be Metallica so it will be able to stand up haha. But yea, the showmanship, the talent and the amazingly hilrious and brutal music videos playing behind them made my friends and I laugh so hard we had to stop singing along. Great show Brendon Small!

    Dethklok never disappoints

by RevolverOcelotRS on 10/26/09Washington Avenue Armory - Albany

There were 4 bands that played total: High on Fire Converge Mastadon and Dethklok High on Fire and Converge sucked beyond belief. Mastadon was OK just not my style. Dethklok never disappoints. The band showed stellar showmanship, the lighting affects were awesome, and the back screen played the music videos of all the songs as they were being performed. All in all it was an awesome experience.
