Denver Nuggets History

One of the founding teams of the American Basketball Association in 1967, the Denver Nuggets franchise was originally known as the Denver Rockets. They preemptively changed their name to the Nuggets before the 1974–75 season, anticipating a move to the NBA (where Houston’s team already had the name). In their nine ABA seasons, the Nuggets made the playoffs seven times — losing in the finals to the New York Nets in the league's final year.

They were one of four ABA teams annexed to the NBA in 1976 and immediately were one of the most successful teams, winning the Midwest Division two straight years behind future Hall of Famers David Thompson and Dan Issel. In 1980, the arrival of another future Hall of Famer, high-scoring forward Alex English, began a run of nine consecutive seasons in the playoffs. Coach Doug Moe's offensive-minded squads made it past the first round of the playoffs four times, falling three times in the conference semifinals and once in the conference finals, in 1985 to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The team had only one winning season in the 1990s, but it was a memorable one. After finishing 42-40 to sneak into the playoffs as the eighth seed in the 1993–94 season, they upset the top-seed Seattle Supersonics in the first round of the playoffs, thanks in no small part to center Dikembe Mutombo's heroics.

Led by 2003 first-round draft pick Carmelo Anthony, the Nuggets reversed their fortunes to post 10 straight winning seasons beginning with the 2003–04 season. The Nuggets won their first NBA championship in 2023, led by two-time league MVP and Finals MVP Nikola Jokić, who collected his third regular season MVP in 2024.

Denver Nuggets at Ball Arena

  • Rings and Banner

by Tony on 10/28/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

It was a great night at Ball Arena, watching the Nuggets players get their world championship rings, and seeing the banner go up in the rafters. Beating the Lakers on opening night was just a nice bonus.

  • Arena is mediocre

by Tyler on 10/27/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

Sound was terrible up the very back. Also was disappointing for opening nuggets game of the season at hugely inflated prices, there was nothing on the seats, no celebratory tshirt, no replica banners. Very poor form

  • Bad experience

by Calos mendoza on 10/27/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 2 out of 5

It was an awesome game but unfortunately we had a person in our section flipping people Off and doing obscene gestures. He didnt get kicked out until the 4th quarter. I took my son so it was not a good experience in that aspect.

  • AMAZING!

by Sandy on 10/27/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

It was an amazing event! The hype, the presentation of the rings, the banner, the fans, the pre-game with TNT and Marcus Camby signature. AND the WIN! GO NUGGETS!

  • A bit shorter than expected

by Lauren on 10/23/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 3 out of 5

My daughter and I attended the open practice event at Ball Arena. We enjoyed it, but were very surprised that it only lasted 1 hour and didnt really showcase any of the starters.

  • Bring winter clothing

by Kasper Ljung Pedersen on 10/23/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

A great day for our little family - first basketball game in NBA ever. All the way from Denmark. A fantastic evening in ball arena. Though prices on beverage was insain? Reduce prices and sell more? We were on vacation and were big spenders - but a beer for approximately 18 dollars. WFT? Paid 720 dollars for 8 tickets - any reason for ripping your fans? ;) The fans were amazing 😍🏀 One negative thing - besides my opinion on prices - there was so crazy cold? Why? If i where the winner of seats under the arenas aircon - then it would be nice know ;)

  • Fab Time

by JMBA on 10/22/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

We thought it was a fabulous time. We were able to see a little practice, players, and trophy close up. The tickets and parking was free, so it made for a fun afternoon Nuggets experience before the season started.

  • Fun and free

by Kerri on 10/18/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

There are lots of people all over Colorado who love the Nuggets! Many can't make the long trek to Denver, afford the tickets to a game, parking fees and the cost of having to stay the night as well, if they live very far away. SO, I was super excited and thankful that the Nuggets held this event for fans to attend for free. The parking was free and easily accessible as well! The festivities at the open practice were fun and funny! (the players awful karaoke singing!) 😅 I got to sit close enough that I could actually make out the faces of the players! DeAndre Jordan is so friendly, fun, and funny! He and honestly almost all the players seemed to have a blast and they seemed to be truly thankful to the fans who attended! Some of us "poorer"folks are the biggest fans!!! I also appreciated that it was held at 12:30 on a Saturday, so it was an easy in, easy out. Traffic wasn't too bad and I drove there and back in the daylight. (This is good for older fans who don't see that well at night.) 😜 My grandson and daughter came with me and they also had a wonderful time! Thank you, thank you, for hosting this great event!!

  • Our boys are back!

by JeSuisUneNicole on 10/18/23Ball Arena - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Aside from Ball Arena not being able to handle venue entry and people waiting in line outside for an hour, the event was great, as always. The boys singing karaoke was super entertaining.

I went to the first ABA all star game the Nuggets hosted.and invented the slam dunk contest. Went to both NBA all star games. But never ever ever been to a NUGGETS Championship party like Saturday. What a great event! Brought my son for his first “game” / practice, he was so excited to watch the players and meet Rocky. I was surprised when Jamal Murray ran into the stands to high five fans, my son included.
