DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979 IN CONCERT:

Canadian dance punk duo Death from Above 1979 amassed a cult following in the early '00s with their critically-praised recordings and monolithic live shows, and a 2016 live EP recorded at Jack White's Third Man Records in Nashville proves they remain a force to be reckoned with in concert. The pair's uptempo songs pack a serious punch, and audiences can't help but feel the power of Jesse F. Keeler's fuzz-laden basslines on standouts like "Romantic Rights," "Blood on Our Hands," and "Trainwreck 1979." Drummer/singer Sebastian Grainger keeps the energy on 10, kicking the tempo into overdrive and delivering his heartbreak lyrics with his fiery vocals. As the pair dive-bombs fans with an unrelenting barrage of supercharged riffs and heart-pounding beats, ticket buyers are more than happy to join in on the distortion-heavy dance party.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Though the details of their formation remain murky (they've circulated tongue-in-cheek rumors that they meet in prison, on a pirate ship, or at a gay bar), it’s clear that Sebastian Grainger (drums/vocals) and Jesse F. Keeler (bass/synths/backing vocals) first rocked Toronto clubs together in 2001. Death from Above 1979 developed a devoted following with their thunderous hometown shows before finding critical acclaim with their 2004 debut album You're a Woman, I'm a Machine. More notoriety followed when the group performed the song "Romantic Rights" on Late Night with Conan O'Brien the following year. Despite their rising profile and critical success, the band split in 2006 due to creative differences and undertook new projects – Grainger pursued a  solo career while Keeler went on to form electronica duo MSTRFKRFT. Fortunately for fans the breakup only lasted five years –  Death from Above 1979 reunited in 2011 and dusted off the cobwebs with a string of low-profile shows. The 2014 release of their sophomore album The Physical World marked the band's return to fighting form, and they embarked on an extensive, well-received tour to bring their massive riffs to back to audiences. As fans await more hard-hitting tracks from the group, they can witness Death from Above 1979 bring down the house at venues around the world.

    Edgy and Cool!

by Moco98 on 1/11/17The Observatory - Santa Ana

This isn't the kind of music I usually listen to, but my boyfriend loves them so we went to see together to see them play and I was honestly quite impressed. The edgy guitar riffs and pumping drum beats kept the energy up, and surprisingly enough, I enjoyed myself. Not my favorite concert ever, but still a very worthwhile and cool experience!

DFA's live energy was on par with my own!

by Caders on 10/17/16Bogart's - Cincinnati

I came to this show a few nights after the Cleveland show, I got in line only maybe 40 mins early and got right up front. Good crowd, no jerks. Death brought the fire yet again, and I danced my buns off. It's really a treat to watch them perform, I love Jesse's moves and hearing Seb's raw voice, and the time they take after a few songs to talk to the audience for a bit. Love them, love their music, love going crazy to them live. Obviously having read that you can tell I came for them. Deap Valley were cool, Also had great energy. BRMC had me grooving but didn't have the same energy as the other two.

DFA WORTH 13 hours of driving

by AnnieJolli on 12/7/14Métropolis - Montreal

Four of us drove from halifax for this show and it was well worth it! The mosh pit was awesome and Death from Above rocked as always. Wish it could have been longer.

    DFA 1979 was freckin' awesome!

    by modestmichael89 on 11/6/14Buckhead Theatre - Atlanta

I missed the opening band and the first part of DFA's set but besides that the show was great. The mosh pit was like a whirlpool and a guy fell out of the pit and puked. It's was an awesome show none the less.

    DFA1979 Slayed

    by bartok7 on 11/6/14Buckhead Theatre - Atlanta

You could hardly tell a day had passed much less ten years since DFA1979 had played Atlanta. The crowd was more than ready for the return. From the first note, people lost their minds in the mosh pit. The material from the band's sophomore record, The Physical World, received just as much excitement from the crowd as anything off the classic You're a Woman, I'm a Machine. The band tore through its set on the opening night of this tour like it had been on the road for a year. Everything was dime-stop tight. Do not miss.

    This is a Loud Band

by DFA1979Heart on 9/7/11The Music Box - Hollywood

I saw them at FYF 2011, before The Music Box. They were loud and this band is about being fucking loud. And like Sebastian G said if their not loud your missing the point. They will kick your arse. I got into this band right after they released their first album and like everyone I was looking forward to seeing them when they decided to break up. Never in a billion years would I ever think to ever see them once let alone TWICE. This band is no joke its business and they will make you move you will either crowd surf or you will head bang. This is loud this is good this is Rock N. Roll.

    DFA OWN

by Anonymous on 9/6/11The Music Box - Hollywood

The energy was high, probably because DFA was broken up and finally came back to play some shows and shut us up. They played fucking fantastic. Not one person left disappointed. The opening act, Funeral Party was damn good too.

    death from above 1979 rocked

by michbaek on 9/6/11The Music Box - Hollywood

The crowd was very energetic and the performance was incredible. Standing near the stage, I was swept up by the aggressive yet exhilarating moshing from the crowd. The venue was packed and the music was loud, the event was memorable and very wild.

    DFA1979 5stars

by 187pictures on 9/6/11The Music Box - Hollywood

the music box is such an amazing venue that if feels like that you can watch any band preform here and you would always enjoy the show, but as the curtains opened and DFA started playing every expectation i had for the show got blown out of the water. the show was one of my best live performances i have seen this year, the only bad thing that i could say is that its a putty that they didn't play for another 2 hours. i would go see DFA 1979 every time they are within 100 miles from me. thank you for an incredible show.

    DFA-1979 - da bomb

by requiem215 on 9/6/11The Music Box - Hollywood

in this heavily promoted world we live in, this show lived up to the hype. DFA ripped through the set with well composed, high energy songs.

tons of energy and great vibes

by timmmeh on 9/6/11The Music Box - Hollywood

the title says it all. DFA played all their classics and everyone I saw in the crowd was having a great time. The only thing I disliked about the show was how fast it went. They played for an hour but it felt like thirty minutes. I would definitely see them again

    Hot in the city

by Livelivelive on 7/24/11The Williamsburg Waterfront - Brooklyn

For this reunion show dfa 1979 managed to pick onof the hottest days of the year, and it was a fun show despite tinny sound and dangerous levels of dehydration. For a full review of his show with drawings done on the spot check out the musikati blog.
