About

David Foster on Tour

Though he's best known as the behind-the-scenes producer and songwriter for megastars like Celine Dion, Michael Buble and Josh Groban, David Foster isn't afraid to step out in front of the mic on occasion. In 2018, he launched The Hitman Tour, a special series of intimate shows that saw him perform selections from his vast repertoire of hits on the piano alongside a revolving cast of guest vocalists (including his wife, Katharine McPhee) and share stories of the songs' creation. The tour proved so successful that Foster extended it through 2019 and into 2020. But Foster isn't one to rest on his past glories: April 2020 sees the release of his first solo album in 24 years, Eleven Words, which applies the stripped-down piano setting of the Hitman Tour to a set of 11 new originals.

David Foster in Concert

Look up any adult-contemporary pop hit from the past 40 years, and there's a good chance David Foster's name is somewhere in the credits. Over the course of his storied career, the Victoria, British Columbia, impresario has mentored some of the biggest names in pop and pushed veteran rock artists to even loftier levels of success, earning some 16 Grammys and Order of Canada honors in the process. After first breaking into the music industry playing keyboards for Canadian soul-rock troupe Skylark, Foster spent the '70s as a session player for the likes of George Harrison and Diana Ross, before scoring his first high-profile writing credit on Earth, Wind & Fire's classic 1979 slow jam "After the Love Has Gone." But through his early-'80s collaborations with Chicago, Foster minted his signature glossy sound, transforming the group from a jazzy classic-rock warhorse into a soft-rock hit machine before applying that Midas touch to Lite-FM divas like Celine Dion and Whitney Houston in the '90s. Amazingly, Foster's hitmaking prowess has only grown more potent since then — in the 21st century, he turned Michael Buble from a wedding singer into a world-class crooner and guided Josh Groban's crossover from classical to pop. But for all his successes behind the boards, Foster has never lost his passion for performing, by periodically tending to his own career as a solo artist in between his production work.

    Fabulous Evening!

by Jan on 5/10/24Hard Rock Live Northern Indiana - Gary

Both David and Katherine have great personalities. And her voice is so beautiful. The magnitude of David’s accomplishments is astounding! The young man, Daniel Emmett, who was part of the show will become a major talent. The next Michael Buble. Our only complaint was the cigarette smoke at the venue permeated into the show room. Also show advertised to start at 7 pm. In actuality, that’s when the doors opened and show started at 8 pm. We rushed through dinner to make it on time only to wait. We saw the show at Hard Rock in Hammond Indiana.

Good show but could have been great.

by Big Bob on 5/8/24Hard Rock Live Northern Indiana - Gary

Show was advertised as a 7 PM show. Never said that time was for "doors open". Sat in the venue for over an hour when we could have enjoyed a nice dinner in one of the many restaurants. Only a few complete songs were performed with a lot of back and forth between David and Katharine. This is the same staged chatter that they do for just about all of these shows so it's nothing new. More music/vocals would have made it a GREAT show.

The show exceeded my expectations! They were fabulous! I love how they interacted with the audience. We had a great time and everyone in the audience seemed to too. I've been following them on social media for a long time. So much talent in one room. Blew us away!!! ADORABLE Rennie stole the show! He's amazing too!

by Fans! on 5/8/24MGM Northfield Park - Center Stage - Northfield

My husband and I loved the concert! The stage was full of so much talent! The songs brought back so memories of our 45 years together. We danced to David's songs, saw the movies, watched American Idol and Smash and so much more. I would love to spend another evening in their presence. So glad Rennie played the drums.

Perfect venue for David’s show. David, Catherine, his band — just awesome! Truly the music was a backdrop to many a memory and so wonderful to hear from the maestro himself!

David Foster: An International Icon & Treasure!

by Kattoo on 5/8/24MGM Northfield Park - Center Stage - Northfield

We love and follow David Foster and have watched his Love in Portofino DVD multiple times, his bio on streaming TV and other wonderful productions. In fact, we had the DVD with us Sunday evening, hoping to maybe even see David for his autograph….LOL. I voted for Katherine on American Idol in 2006 (WOW, was it really THAT long ago?!?) and followed her ever since. Daniel Emmet is SPECTACULAR and I look forward to the great career ahead of him. David’s video and audio montage of writing and production of our favorites and most memorable songs for countless beloved artists was well done. It was especially exciting to experience little Rennie’s drumming prowess live! I had seen and shared his Instagram clips before the concert. I imagine that he will have command of all music by age 10: all instruments, vocals and production. I hope he will continue to share his gifts. I would recommend this concert to all and hope to attend again someday!

    Disappointing vocal style

by Marlene on 5/8/24MGM Northfield Park - Center Stage - Northfield

McPhee’s voice was not as good as she was in Smash. There was a lot of traveling around the notes, which was annoying and disappointing.

Could have been great, but wasn't

by Disappointing on 5/8/24MGM Northfield Park - Center Stage - Northfield

David Foster is a musical genius, but this performance was lacking. The show was about 90 minutes, not the shortest show, but they spent more time talking than singing. Now I do enjoy when performers share stories, but then extend the concert as well. They probably talked as much as they sang which was disappointing. They also had a special guest who was outstanding and while they did say his name several times it was hard to hear and they never showed his name once on the screen so while I'm sure I can google and find it, I left not knowing his name. I know David wasn't feeling great at the show which of course is unfortunate, but then let Katherine and the mystery man singe more, that would have been great. Bottom line is, I don't care to go back and see another David Foster show, but I do hope he continues to write great music.

    Slightly Disappointed

by Patsy on 5/8/24MGM Northfield Park - Center Stage - Northfield

While the music and vocals were beautiful, I felt that Foster was just there to brag about his accomplishments. Too much about him. He also came across as snarky or crabby. He said he was fighting a cold, but he’s a professional, suck it up. We paid decent money to see him, no need to be a grouch. On another note, his little boy stole the show!! Adorable.

Great, but not a home run.

by Wink on 5/8/24MGM Northfield Park - Center Stage - Northfield

I have followed David Foster for decades. Love his music, style, arranging, the whole ball of wax. The venue was great. Sound was clean. Catherine is top notch. We were expecting an evening with David and Catherine. We would have been much happier without the other guests and without all the chit-chat. Some of the expletives' could have been deleted, but that's today's culture...I guess! The ending was a let-down, and the, so-called, curtain call was a real let-down. For a creative guy like Foster, who is known for his rim-shots, the rim-shot was missing. Please don't misunderstand; I would sit through the whole thing again, just to hear and see David and Catherine, but it wasn't nearly what it could have been, considering the volume of David's work. We are glad we went. We rode home listening to even more Foster on my wife's phone. From the Winter Olympics' Theme, to The Fountain, to Chicago, to The Prayer, and on and on and on, I love David Foster's music. I pray he stays at it for many, many years!
