First, I haven't seen David Bromberg happier or seeming to have as much fun on stage in many years. Humor and sarcasm were frequent and pointed -- just like in the day... It's always a joy to have a long set and David came through with a mix of acoustic fingerstyle and electric blues and R/R. Only regret: No Gary Davis tunes on the play list. His travel band, Ollabelle, were a bunch of lucky youngsters to be sure. The drummer will be around for a long career. Not too sure about the others. Keyboard player has great skills but they got lost on excessive electronica. Vocalist/guitarist had a lovely voice. We'll see if it is different enough and good enough to distinguish her for a long career. I had never heard of them, but they seemed to have a number of fans in the audience. All in all, never miss a show by David B. He's a true American master and legend for a reason.

Bromberg and Company at Top of Their Game!!!

by robg1 on 7/18/11The Stone Pony - Asbury Park

No one, and i mean no one, tells a story like David. He played his heart out, sang his lungs out, and had his audience in the palm of his hand all night long. The crowd was so into the music, no one wanted to see it end. The Angel Band is amazing, I could see them over and over, each time walking out thinking, "i can't wait till they come around again". David's new CD "Use Me" is very, very good. However, if you catch David and the Angel Band live, you will hear and see some of the greatest music of our time, hands down. Keep an eye out and bring a friend, you won't be sorry. And most likely, you will come back time and time again. Stone Pony is a great venue, nice and close to the band. Wherever David and the Angel Band play, if we can be there, we will.

David Bromberg never fails to please. His set list will make you laugh and make you cry and all of this through musicianship that is unparalleled . The band proved they are equall adept at playing in concert halls or in a club such as the Stone Pony.

Keswick is a nice old style theatre venue, but the lobby in the back has too much noise bellowing down into the theatre itself. Some just can't read the signs to be quiet. Other than that, David Bromberg put on a great show as expected, to a standing ovation at the end. Would love to have heard more of his earlier greats, but hey, there's only so much time, and as it was, he played longer than he originally planned. He gives you your monies worth and more.

The David Bromberg Band are a remarkable set of musicians that take you on a journey through blues, jazz, folk, roots and anything else they feel like exploring on any given evening. Go, sit back and enjoy.

    Finger Pickin' good

    by Peej2 on 3/21/11Keswick Theatre - Glenside

Awesome musicians! Horn line. WoW! I was right in front of them and couldn't take my eyes off them. Loved seeing them select their instruments. Dave knows how to put together a tight band and they really enjoyed playing together. Did not like the Angel Band. They were OK as background vocals.

Bromberg and the Big Band showed their versatility and suberb musicianship as they tackled genres from New Orleans, to Chicago blues, to bluegrass - even a brilliant version of "Over the Rainbow". Angel Band opened up and they were an amazing opening act! The "girls" came back with the Big Band to sing back up on such classics as "Send Me to the 'Lectric Chair" and "The Holdup". David mentioned a new CD to be coming out soon and the one song off the new material was great! Can't wait for new stuff.

Bromberg & his Big Band were fantastic!

by therapidone on 2/16/11Birchmere - Alexandria

There is nothing like a David Bromberg and his Big Band concert. I've seen them perform 3 or 4 times before, and their recent performance was as good as ever. What is apparent, however, is that the members of the group are growing older and actually look to be a little infirm (the long-time drummer couldn't make it because of health-related problems, but the "new guy, Josh" was great for only his 2nd time appearing with them. This year could easily be the last time to see them together. However, regardless of how gingerly they walked or looked, their playing was as stellar as ever...and they were having fun on the stage making music...you could see it in their faces. So, if you like the blues, country, ballads, and great fiddle playing, great mandolin playing, wonderful guitar playing, and a great horn section (sax, trumpet, slide trombone), catch them before their gone.

    David Bromberg Big Band

by Blueshead on 2/16/11Birchmere - Alexandria

I have seen David Bromberg with out his big band numerous times over the years and enjoyed every single show. The first time I saw David Bromberg was in the early 80's with his big band and will never forget that show. I have looked for a repeat of that show evcer since. I loved every moment of this show. Is it possible his voice is stronger? For all you Bromberg fans out there if you get a chance to see him with his big band this is when he is at his best.

The only things missing were Dixieland and Sharon

    by Redhead2011 on 2/15/11Birchmere - Alexandria

How can one guy and a bunch of virtuosos play that well in that many styles? Bromberg showed that his 40+ years of writing and playing, not to mention a pile of talent, put him at the top of the list for a great show. (And he was pretty close to the top of the list many years ago, when I saw him at a small venue in Ann Arbor, MI. Who would have expected his voice to get that much better?) What's your pleasure? Rock? Folk? Blues? IRISH? Bring on the Bromberg. See if you can get him to bring his string and horn sections too. Best clarinet solo I ever heard was at this show.

Bromberg still as good with Big Band

by papasully on 2/15/11Birchmere - Alexandria

I saw the Big Band 30+ years ago in Chicago and they may be a little older as I, but we went out to Virginia expecting to be entertained and we were not disapointed. We would do it again,I just wish The Big Band would come back to Chicago.

Bromberg is as irreverent as ever!

by sherre on 2/14/11Birchmere - Alexandria

Bromberg and the Big Band were Fantastic... even though they are getting a little on in years, they still jam better than any band I have seen... This is my 7th time seeing Bromberg, 3rd w/big band. I traveled from SC to see him and would travel to see him again. My only complaint is he didn't play "Sharon". What the Hell?? how could he play w/the big band and NOT play "Sharon"? David, Add it to your play list! Can't wait to see him again. Sherre

    The David Bromberg Band

by playinvb on 2/14/11Birchmere - Alexandria

This show was everything I expected and more. Bromberg brings energy, fun, and enthusiasm, and his band is top notch. Lots of familiar songs, but done differently than heard before. The song list spanned quite a bit of his career, and was just plain outstanding.

    Worth the 40 Year wait.

    by Vandman1 on 2/14/11Birchmere - Alexandria

I first heard David Bromberg in 1971. I got to see the Bromberg Trio in 1980. With only a trio he could not do a lot of the songs many of us wanted to hear. This time he was with the big band most of whom date back to the early 70s band. Saturday evening he opened to a raucous crowd with Sloppy Drunk. During the next two hours songs included Dyin Crapshooters Blues, Pallet on your Floor, Summer Wages, Come Into My Kitchen, Drown in my own tears, Send Me To the Lectric Chair, Will Not Be Your Fool and came back for an encore with Just Called to Tell You. Midway through the performance David did Over the Rainbow. In all David did 15 songs. I cannot wait another forty years to hear David Bromberg again. I doubt either of us will make it. I drove six hours for this show and will gladly do it again.

It had been so long . ..

by MelvisC on 2/14/11Birchmere - Alexandria

. . . And they are still so good, I started to weep tears of joy when I got back to my car. I never thought I would see the Big Band again. The show in DC was so good, I immediately got 3 tix for Tarrytown and Albany, and called my old pals from Boston. We're doing mini-tour. Who knows if we'll ever have this chance again? My friends' bands have played all of Bromberg's songs for almost 40 years. ~

How can his voice still sound so good?

by BirdingCarol on 2/14/11Birchmere - Alexandria

David Bromberg is amazing. His voice remains so sweet and pure, even after all these years. Every member of his band pulls his/her weight. The Angel Band, led by Bromberg's wife, is a wonderful addition. You can tell how much fun they're all having. I'll never miss a Bromberg show at the Birchmere.
