About

DAVE RAWLINGS MACHINE IN CONCERT:

Dave Rawlings Machine is the latest project of acclaimed guitarist Dave Rawlings, best known as the musical partner of Grammy-nominated bluegrass artist Gillian Welch. Now performing under his own name with his band the Machine, Rawlings brings the same impressive musicianship he's become famous for to the table, wowing fans at his live shows with his deftly crafted songs and the vintage tone of his 1935 Epiphone Olympic guitar. On his latest tour Rawlings and the Machine will treat ticket buyers to cuts from their 2009 album A Friend of a Friend alongside barnstorming covers of bluegrass classics.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Rhode Island-born David Rawlings studied at Boston's Berklee College of Music before rising to prominence as the musical partner of Gillian Welch.  As co-writer and producer Rawlings released five acclaimed albums with Welch, garnering several Grammy nominations including Best Contemporary Folk Album nods for Revival (1996) and The Harrow & The Harvest (2011). In 2009 Rawlings and his band the Machine made their album debut with A Friend of a Friend, which he produced himself in Nashville. In addition to his releases with Welch, his production and studio credits include work for Old Crow Medicine Show, Bright Eyes, and Ryan Adams. Back on tour, Rawlings and the Machine will treat fans to their uniquely brooding take on bluegrass and Americana.

Excelant show, would recommend to everyone. Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch (both Berklee Alumni) perform and surround themselves with the very best artists for their genre. Willie Watson has a very unique voice and is a very talented musician. (I look forward to seeing his solo work). John Paul Jones (A rock legend) impressed me his versatility and his willingness to stand in the shadows! Paul Kowert, like Willie Watson, I'm unfamiliar with, but demonstrated a very good voice (when called upon) and very musically inclined. Both have associated themselves with very talented people.

    Simply Boring

    by TN2010 on 6/30/14Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

The music as good. Expected more than a glorified salute to Dave Rawlings. Had hoped that Willie Watson would be singing more of his own songs instead of being part of the entire set. There was no connection between Dave and the audience. Awkward silence while instruments were tuned. Won't be attending any of Dave or Gillian concerts.

    Dave Rawlings is awesome !

    by Honcho1 on 6/30/14Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Two 1 hour plus sets! They didn't want to stop after the last set, so they just kept on with the encore! Great entertainment, people we talked to flew in from Ft. Lauderdale, talked to others from Wisconsin, New Orleans etc. This band draws from all over!

Amazing! You can't beat Dave Rawlings Machine for a live show. My face hurt at the end of the night from smiling. Pure pleasure to watch! The Ryman is one of the best places to see a show.

    Dave Rawlings Machine ...WoW

by Dobrodaddy on 6/30/14Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

From the first song "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" through the many standing ovations, Dave Rawlings Machine brought down the Ryman. Wow what a performance. Great stuff.

Dave Rawlings' Machine Rocked the Ryman!

by LeapinLemur on 6/30/14Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Dave Rawlings, Gillian Welch, John Paul Jones, Willie Watson, and Paul Kowert rolled the Machine into Nashville and put on an amazing show! They performed standards such as "Will The Circle Be Unbroken", "This Land is Your Land", they covered Bob Dylan's "Queen Jane Approximately", Neil Young's "Cortez, the Killer", Led Zeplin's "Goin' to California", and the "Go To Sleep Little Baby" a Capella refrain from "Oh Brother Where Art There". They performed many of Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch's catalogue. They played over 3 hours with only one brief intermission. They gave 3 encores. The audience was absolutely spellbound. The Machine genuinely appeared to be having a great time. This is one of the best shows we've seen in years!

    David Rawlings

Was a tremendous concert, with a truly outstanding group of musicians. Should have picked up tickets for both nights, back to back. John Paul Jones was a special treat. Glad to see he received the recognition during his introductions from David.

This group of musicians not only has incredible vocal talent, but with John Paul Jones on mandolin and Dave Rawlings' magical guitar, it is too good to miss.

    David Rawlings Machine was great

by Eakers on 6/27/14Uptown Theater - Kansas City

The venue was great, not as many people showed up as I thought would and everyone was on the floor, which was great. I wish they would have turned up John Paul Jones's mic before the second half of the show. David was fantastic and Willie Watson was great. I love acoustic music and this is one of the best.

    Crazy Good!

The Dave Rawlings Machine did not disappoint! They gave us their all with amazing instrumentals and vocals. Songs like Sweet Tooth, Ruby, The Weight, Cortez the Killer, To be Young...and so many more certainly kept the House Alive and Thankful to be in the right place at the right time! Thank you for such an amazing show Gilliian Welch, Dave Rawlings, John Paul Jones, Paul Kowert and Willlie Watson!

by jcrumley on 11/25/13Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Easily one of the top 5 shows I've ever seen and I've seen hundreds of concerts. Dave Rawlings is the best guitar player in that style I've seen. John Paul Jones and Gillian Welch and Willie Watson are all so talented as well. Bravo!

Great Show Ruined by Selfish People

by Atlantadmc on 11/24/13Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Dave was great, and so was Gillian, and John Paul Jones was wonderful too. Good mix of Dave tunes, Gil/Dave songs, classics and covers with fine sound in two sets. Problem was, the crowd in the theater seats stood throughout--those on the sides stayed seated. Never saw this before, and I did not appreciate it, nor did my friend with rheumatoid arthritis. The usher refused to do anything. :(
