Off the chain!
by Mor on 12/20/18Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5My best friend had flown into town on Saturday, and this was a awesome treat to share with her - one of my absolutely best jazz concerts! Although our seats were toward the back, we still had an unobstructed few of the stage - right at the railing so no one walking or standing in front of us. The dynamic additions for me was the introduction of Shelea (a Quincy Jones discovery) - that young lady has a voice on her (we may have lost Whitney & Aretha, but she ...... well, you had to have been there, or begin to follow her to see what I mean - heart-stirring, goosebump-soaring vocals!) . Then, of course, Keiko Matsui, a petite, dynamic virtuoso who brings such joy and awe; Jonathan Butler, a wonderful musician and singer who always brings us back to our spiritual roots - Jesus Christ, the reason for the season!; Mindi Abair, wonderful saxaphonist; and, of course, Dave Koz - such an awesome musician - love his generous spirit. Finally, the encore that include Valerie Simpson who was in the audience and Dave invited her to the stage for the final song! Our spirits were lifted -- and my friend was able, for that evening, to forget her sorrow in the death of her husband (last year at this time), and enjoy the healing power of music! Thank you Dave Koz and Friends!
