About

Fusing low-res electronic noise and pop hooks so effortlessly that it can seem accidental, Crystal Castles began as producer/multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath's solo project in late 2003. Kath got the moniker from the name of She-Ra's dwelling in the -He-Man and -Masters of the Universe cartoon series; it's also the name of a 1983 Atari video game, which is oddly appropriate, considering that one component of the band's distinctive sound comes from a keyboard modified with an Atari 5200 sound chip. When Kath collaborated with singer Alice Glass on some songs in spring 2005, Crystal Castles' lineup was complete. One of the songs the pair recorded, "Alice Practice," was something of an accident: it was intended to be a demo of Glass testing out a microphone, but its presence on MySpace piqued record labels' interest. "Alice Practice" was released as a limited-edition 7" in summer 2006 on Merok Records, also home to Klaxons; its 500-copy run sold out in three days. Kath and Glass worked on their own songs and also honed their remixing skills, tweaking songs for Klaxons as well as GoodBooks, Uffie, Health, and Bloc Party. Tours with the Presets and Metric in 2007 set the stage for the release of Crystal Castles' self-titled debut album, which Last Gang released early in 2008. The duo returned in 2010 with another self-titled album; when it leaked onto the Internet in late April of that year, the band released it digitally soon after, with a physical release following that May. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

    Crystal Castles!

by lele123 on 3/6/11The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

Crystal Castles are always amazing. I love their shows and highly recommend them. Even though Alice Glass's ankle was broken she still managed to be amazing as always. I didn't like the venue, security was way too strict!!!

    Holy Shit

by HipGuy on 3/6/11The Warfield - San Francisco

This was probably the most amazing thing I have ever witnessed. Crystal Castles was godly and Suuns, the band that opened for them was amazing as well. The set for crystal castles was nuts and they put on an amazing show.

    Tops of 2011 / 1 critical op

by Anonymous on 3/6/11The Warfield - San Francisco

Other than the vox being somewhat incorrectly mixed by the sound staff, the concert was awesome. Lead singer defiantly regaled the crowd while dealing with a freshly splinted broken ankle. Just file it under "badass." All in attendance were enthralled by an authenticity and moody professionalism -- gravitas and energy par excellance....

    Crystal Castles at Warfield SF

by browngazelle on 3/6/11The Warfield - San Francisco

Never seen a crowd dance as much as I did at this show. The lead singer Alice Glass rocked the show even with a broken ankle in a boot! Amazing light show and beats. Definately a high energy show!

Crystal Castles at the Warfield, SF

by reviewmoodle on 3/6/11The Warfield - San Francisco

The Warfield is a beautiful venue, but much too big. It has theater seating and looks like it would have good acoustics, but unfortunately it sounded like they never did a sound check before the show. Alice's vocals were mostly drown out by the music for the whole show. I do have to say Alice rocked. Despite having broken her ankle, she danced and hopped around with her crutches the whole show. That was great! I just wish we could have seen them at a smaller venue or at least a place with better sound.

Bob Saget says "See them whenever you can!!!!!!"

by bobsagett on 3/6/11The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

Always one of the most incredible shows ever. Alice's broken ankle made for an extra special performance I will never forget. Her wild flailing, supported on a cane with one foot perched on the monitor. Crystal Castles forever!!!!!!!!!!

This was a show full of non stop energy, amazing set, and great attitude. Even when injured they were nothing but fun and went all out. It was a great time.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE both of Crystal Castles studio albums and was stoked when I bought tickets to their 3/4/11 show at The Warfield. To my surprise they are TERRIBLE live. I've been to a lot of concerts and this has to be the worse live performance I have ever witnessed. Alice Glass sounds terrible live. Of course after the show I googled to check if I was the only one who felt this way and I wasn't. Seems a ton of people agree that their albums are amazing and their live shows totally blow. Wish i would have checked these opinions on google before I bought the tickets. Don't say I didn't warn you!

    absolute perfection.

by agirlwholovesaliceglass on 3/6/11The Warfield - San Francisco

alice glass and ethan kath are absolutely amazing. alice stood on the barricade with a broken ankle and crawled around the stage with her whiskey whilst belting her heart out, sending the crowd into absolute insanity. ethan's music fit perfectly with the lights as everyone on the main floor (where i was) raved and thrashed and caused a good amount of bruises on my knees as well as my ears buzzing for about 24 hours after. overall, the concert was insane. and in the alice glass way. (the best way possible)

the concert was alright, it wasn't what i expected. crystal castles took a long time to perform on stage and they only played for an hour. the waiting took longer than the actual concert.

    Sweat, Beats and broken ankels!

by Dimisum on 3/5/11The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

The night was cold and the atmosphere was very anxious. The opening band did hurt a bit but once Crystal Castles came on stage it was unforgettable. Their main emcee came out and announced that Alice had broken her ankle recently and a doctor told her to cancel the show. Then after a quick pause said that she replied with a huge FUCK YOU! The lights went out and you see her limp towards the mic as the rest of the band assembles. Then you get assaulted with strobe lights and beats. it felt like as soon as it started it was over :( They played all the songs that make them great and even played one song I haven't heard during the encore. Amazing show based heavily off lighting and bass. Never seen anything like it. If you're lucky you will get a chance to see it.

    Crystal Castles killed it!

by ElectroJunkie on 3/5/11The Fox Theater - Pomona - Pomona

Alice Glass rocked the crowd even though her foot was broken. The hard beats combined with the crazy drum playing and Alice's screaming manipulated vocals were out of this world. Crystal Castles is a bunch of amazing, beautifully loud noise and the whole experience is something really special to be seen live.
