About

COURTNEY BARNETT IN CONCERT:

Australian alt-rock up-and-comer Courtney Barnett is quickly making a name for herself with her witty lyrics and deadpan vocal delivery. Fans of clever wordplay and surprising lyrical juxtaposition will find much to love in jangly gems like "Avant Gardener" and "History Eraser", and Barnett's performance style -- a mixture of shambling ease and surprising precision -- perfectly complements the complex personality she reveals through her music. Barnett is still a relative newcomer, but she's already generated significant excitement for future tour dates with pitch-perfect performances at  showcases around the world.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Melbourne, Barnett attended the Tasmanian School of Art before returning to her hometown to pursue music full-time. After a stint playing with The Dandy Warhol's Brent DeBoer in a band called Union, she made her EP debut in 2012 with I've Got a Friend Called Ferris. She quickly followed up with her full-length debut album How to Carve a Carrot into a Rose, garnering a Best New Music nod from Pitchfork and hitting the road for extensive touring. In late 2013 she caught the eye of Rolling Stone and The New York Times with her performances at the CMJ Music Marathon, with both outlets naming her one of the festival's standout acts. A bright young talent with a diamond-sharp wit, Barnett has fans eagerly awaiting her next tour dates.

    Shortest set, ever!!

by LuxxieNterior on 10/23/17Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

First time ever in the balcony section. Crew was very accommodating in letting us know where the restrooms and sections were. We were almost all the way to the back, which I was not expecting, since the map on the website made it look much closer to the stage. I felt like the main act was entirely too short. I get that live sounds very different from the studio versions-- but i felt like Kurt Vile and especially Courtney Barnett just flew through all their songs ending the show at a disappointing 10:30PM ( that's never happened to me at The Fox). Maybe Court had a bad day, it seemed she wasn't really into engaging the audience and she fumbled through her words when she tried or was responding to Kurt's banter. Whatever though.. it seemed like from what I overheard after the show from other attendees-- everyone was gushing and loved it.. maybe I just has higher expectations for these two talented artist putting a show together.

    Sweet and heartwarming show

    by 911Chief on 10/22/17Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Channeling a Chrissie Hynde/Neil Young vibe, Courtney and Kurt played an affectionate show. I’m usually predisposed to liking a more energetic guitar driven blowout, but I like Courtney Barnett. It’s nice to see a sweet show that was energetic but not driven by showy fireworks. It was about the music, their music, not pandering to artificial appeal, but inviting the audience into their easy going love fest.

    Slow, slow music

by Hcarey on 10/22/17Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I’m a big fan of Courtney Barnett, but she allowed Kurt Vile to dominate most of the show. Their voices are great together, but the songs are very slow, so it wasn’t exciting.

    Great album, very bad live

    by Davemc11 on 10/21/17Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Was excited for this show. Love KV, like the Sea Lice collab album. Unfortunately the live performance was not good. The drummer was constantly falling out of time and playing fills that did not fit the songs. Courtney also had issues playing in time and hitting chords. When she botched a solo a song had an abrupt end. Kurt and the bassist played pretty well, it just seems there is no live cohesion yet and it made for a very awkward and unsatisfying show. KV played a few of his own songs but would trade singing lines with Courtney, which she also would not do in time and so he would not be able to sing his line on time. It ruined the songs. Many people left early. I get that KV and Courtney's charm is playing a little imperfectly and not hitting notes. This show went way beyond that. I feel like I paid to watch band practice.

Dynamic Duo - Courtney & Kurt

by Laulou212 on 10/21/17The Cathedral Sanctuary at Immanuel Presbyterian - Los Angeles

This show was wonderful. The venue is spacious yet intimate and the acoustics were great. Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile work really well together. The songs were so beautiful and meaningful. Barnett & Vile were very charming. We had a lovely evening letting the gorgeous sounds wash over us. Great night!

There was NO Courtney Barnett Concert!

by Shabangs on 10/17/17The Cathedral Sanctuary at Immanuel Presbyterian - Los Angeles

HORRIBLE!!! Courtney Barnett should be embarrassed to disappoint her fans like that. 1st, she hid behind smokey, amber colored lights so you couldn’t see her? What? Then it really was a Kurt Vile concert. His deep and louder voice drowned her out in every unrecognizable song they performed. She did exactly 1 hit! Didn’t even bother to sing the song i wanted to hear—NOBODY CARES IF YOU DON’T GO TO THE PARTY! That’s right Courtney...you didn’t really care that we came out to your party to hear YOU sing! She didn’t care..at all. Terrible, worst concert I’ve been to in years!

    Blew the roof off!

by JohnJohnJones on 5/30/16Electric Factory - Philadelphia

This was an AMAZING show- I had only been a casual fan looking to check out her show and I am now a converted super fan. Words can't even describe how killer this show was- Courtney is an authentic rocker and the rest of the band was simply kick ass. Must see

One of the best rock acts you can watch in 2016

    by EJParas23 on 5/29/16Electric Factory - Philadelphia

I'm a big Courtney Barnett fan, and she did not disappoint in the slightest. She plays with a great amount of energy and interacts with the crowd with her lovable awkward personality. Most songs go along with a video that's projected on the screen behind the band, creating an awesome and visceral visual experience. Kurt Cobain was one of her influences, and he would've LOVED Courtney. She plays for about an hour and 20 minutes, and you'll love every minute of it.

    Rising star

by Gbruck on 5/29/16Electric Factory - Philadelphia

Another fantastic show. Courtney improves every time we see her. The trio is tight and her voice and guitar work is spot on. This was our third time in the past 18 months seeing her and look forward to the next show.

    Awesome night

    by Suefan4life on 5/29/16Electric Factory - Philadelphia

Courtney and crew were in fine form. It wasn't a long show but it was plenty. They ripped through the set mostly from their last album. The place was packed and the folks see all rocking.

Best concert I have seen in a while

by Anonymous on 5/29/16Electric Factory - Philadelphia

I went in to the concert already loving Courtney Burnett and she delivered all I could have asked for and more. The show had great energy and mix of songs. I really enjoyed the animations playing behind them too. The animations were visually stunning and added to the mood of the performance.

    Maxed out sound...

    by Micco92 on 7/25/15Terminal 5 - New York

Great performance by Courtney Barnett and the even more interesting opening act! However, the sound quality was horrible: Al over- powering percussion, constantly clipping highs, lots of white noise and obviously maxed out amplification made this a less enjoyable experience. Is everybody deaf nowadays?

Courtney Barnett, Torres, and Speedy Ortiz great!!

by Fishcanhearyou on 7/25/15Terminal 5 - New York

that concert, was the best concert, I have ever been to. The floor may have been covered with gum and spilled beer, but the concert was just so amazing that I forgot about that. Keep up the good work guys!!!

Courtney Barnett was even better than last year

by Sickshow on 5/25/15Bowery Ballroom - New York

I enjoyed seeing Courtney Barnett last year when she opened for San Fermin, this year she hit a new level in my opinion. The amount of sound and energy they got out of a three member band was intense. I'm no music expert but I give her a ton of credit for taking on the lead guitar to go with her amazing lyrics/singing. The band is an enjoyable listen on the radio but they kill it in a live venue.
