    Buika Concert

by YKRAPS on 10/18/12Walt Disney Concert - Los Angeles

I'm giving her 4 starts because she has an amazing voice! I was lucky to see her performed with Lila Downs, I was so anxious to hear her live and I was expecting for Buika to out performed Lila but she didn't. Why? Well she was talking a lot too! It is totally fine for the performer to have interaction with the crowd however it shouldn't take more than 30% of the Artist's performing time, Artist should focus on singing, singing, singing, specailly when you wait for years to see them perform live. Why do you think year after year Vicente Fernandez concerts sold out? Hopefully her manager gets to read the reviews, I'm defienty attending this concert and giving her another chance! I believe in you Buika don't disappoint me....

Buika is a great singer but she should respect her fans a bit more. She talked more than singing, and hardly was one hour on stage. Surely she was thinking of her next show, one hour later.

    Buika was AMAZING...

by dijazz on 6/25/12Howard Theatre - Washington

I had never heard of Concha Buika before I was invited to go to her concert with some friends. Where the heck have I been, not to have known about such a stunning vocalist....? In the wake of my ignorance, I am glad for the revelation. I suppose life is meant to continually open us to new suprises like this... Looking back on her work, I have alot of catching up to do. This concert was a good start. It's hard to remember when I was so moved by a performance. She came out unassuming, with a shyness that veiled the power she possesses. From the first notes I could tell there was an emotion packed into this slight woman that nothing could contain. And her smile - so charming - as were her spontaneous burst of flamenco dance. Her voice is like violet crumble - honecomb candy coated in chocolate. Her love of the music - captivating...the rawness of the delivery of songs pulled the emotion right from the audiens and gave her even more power. Definately an old soul in there. She sang her songs accompanied by guitar and cajon drum. Maestros on each; both talents mingled with hers. We were so enthralled we stayed for the second show...which we only found out we could attend at no cost as we were getting ready to leave. That brings me to the venue; the newly refurbished Howard Theatre. I will attend another show there but only because I know the lay of the land, now. Aspects of the Howard Theatre are less than impressive and newcomers should be forwarned. The front of house staff and their system for crowd control are somewhat militant and less than welcoming. I think they were all trained by TSA agents. Upon entering the theatre we told the host we had three in our party, one of us was en route. But we weren't allowed to sit down and save her a seat. Choosing to ignore this hefty inconvenience we took the opportunity to get a good table. The lad showing us to our seats also had two other people to seat and we lost him in the crowd. Not knowing what to do we found our own table and sat down next to each other. We were summarily instructed to sit across from each other in 'cabaret style' seating. Our friend arrived and went to the bathroom but we were accosted by secret service styled bouncers who wanted to know why we were saving a seat....It wasn't a pleasant beginning. But at least we had a place to sit...someone in line told us they had to stand for an entire concert without prior warning that they would be on their feet for two hours. The whole front-of-house, crowd control should be rethought. Nothing like paying $50 for a ticket to get treated so badly. Our friend arrived back at the table and we ordered wine and food - pricey but good even if the portions were rather small. Our server was amiable and thankfully so. It made us feel somewhat more welcomed. The saving grace was an apologetic and kind-hearted marketing manager and TWO fantastic shows for the price of one.... Buy this woman's records...you WON'T be disappoined.

    Concha Buika= PHENOMENAL!

Her show was AMAZING! An unforgettable event that had everyone moving in their seats. I enjoyed the restaurant style seating of the theater, and REALLY enjoyed that we were so close to the stage! The boyfriend LOVED it! Kudos to me! :-)

    A performance genius

by ramonctaylor on 6/24/12Howard Theatre - Washington

Buika takes her craft to incredible heights on-stage. She will create new rhythms and soul-driven sounds in the middle of her already amazing tracks. The only person I've heard that can scream and make it sound utterly beautiful, with that unmatched smokey Afro-flamenco voice. Add the percussion artist and guitarist, and you have a master trio. This is not to be missed.

    Incredible

by Rosette35 on 11/5/10University of Denver - Newman Center - Gates Concert Hall - Denver

It was a very laid back setting. Buika appeared in jeans and a tank top. Three other musicians accompanied her on stage. Her performance was unforgettable! I felt transported to another place--even though I don't understand a lot of Spanish! She sings from the depth of her heart and soul!! Felt very fortunate I got to see her perform!

Performance was great; I have been a fan of Chavela Vargas for many years. Only complaint: the stage lighting was poor. The show was most enjoyable for those of us who are fluent in Spanish,

A true artist in every way

by bichito on 10/26/10Berklee Performance Center - Boston

Concha was amazing, even though I had extremely high expectations after her last album "El ultimo trago". I was pleased to see Javier Limon Jam with her for a little while at the beginning for a fresh touch by the brilliant producer in person. Buika's personality not so much flows as gushes through her singing, which is mixed with moments of euforia that pass between Concha and her audience seamlessly; how someone has that much talent at expressing and transmitting raw passions is awesome (not the regular "awesome", but the truly awe-some). I can't imagine not falling in love with her after the first note.Truly an unforgettable experience, musical and otherwise.

    Buika in NYC

She is simply THE BEST. She could have easily filled out a bigger venue. However, I liked how personal the whole show felt. Love, love LOVE her!

Buika was all over the place in genres and seemed high or drunk. Far too many covers of music by others instead of her original work. Do we really need yet another rendition of Volver, Volver!!! Disappointing she did not sing La Falsa Moneda or Ojos Verdes. Mi Nina Lola made it to the encore. The encore was only for that single song! Some concerts turn you off an artist. This was such a concert for me. I had just discovered Buika and was excited about seeing her Jazzy Flamenco and great voice live. Instead, I got covers of Mexican oldies from an apparently inebriated artist. It is as if she is letting her management try what they think will make her a big hit in the Americas instead of finding her own identity as an artist.

    The Phenomenal Buika!

by RoxanneVincent on 10/25/10Berklee Performance Center - Boston

Buika is an exceptional talent whose voice is like no other. Her live performance was easily one of the most moving, powerful and emotional rides I've ever taken. The only thing more enjoyable than her talent, and her talented band (including a special appearance by the equally talented Javier Limon) was her charming personality. She shared stories filled with honesty and humility that enhanced the entire evening.

extraordinary artist, diverse: Cuban, caribbean, but also the bolero, etc. of Chavela Vargas. What Buika is unparalleled at is flamenco, the modern flamenco song.

    Buika at Berklee Performance Center

by vjpratt on 10/25/10Berklee Performance Center - Boston

I saw Buika on Saturday night at the Berklee Performance center. When she came out and began to sing, the hair stood up on my arms and a chill went up my back. I'll never forget her performance.

Concha Buika can quite sing, but most of the time she prefers to scream. She is laughing all the time, mostly for no reason at all other that to camouflage her inability to dance and to inhabit the stage space. Her musicians are good and her voice is OK -- when, again, she doens't scream but sing, which is the case less than 50% of the time.
