Sinatra Fly with me a real disappointment

by Ubiquitous1 on 8/7/11Fox Theatre Atlanta - Atlanta

So disappointed. Felt like I was at a dance recital. A really good dance recital but still. The music of the big band on the stage was outstanding but the show, overall, a real disappointment.

    come fly away

by kendall on 8/7/11Fox Theatre Atlanta - Atlanta

We really enjoyed the Frank Sinatra music....the dancing was very good, but became boring because it seemed to be the same dance steps repeated over and over for each song....We would have preferred some dialogue from the dancers to make it more enjoyable....

Wonderful evening with Sinatra & Twarp

by CJRATL on 8/7/11Fox Theatre Atlanta - Atlanta

Really enjoyed the evening of Sinatra and Twarp. Beautiful, beautiful dancers with amazing strength and stamina and skills. Was a gift for my husband he was 100% delighted. Only thing I would change is to add an intermission and make the show a little bit longer. We all felt it was too short.

    High energy good time

by smoakey on 8/6/11Fox Theatre Atlanta - Atlanta

Even if you're not a huge Sinatra fan, Twyla Tharp's choreography creates a high energy good time, and you can't help finding yourself foot tapping to the beat of songs you've heard throughout the years.

Come Fly Away was terrific, but short

by CCCHarry on 8/6/11Fox Theatre Atlanta - Atlanta

Come Fly Away, at the Fox in Atlanta, was a great performance; the excellent live "big band" synched (sp?) well with the recorded voice of Sinatra; and the dancers were terrific. The show started 15 minutes after the advertised time (by design I was told by an usher), which was a nuisance; and the show was only about 65 or 70 minutes long, which was a disappointment. But - - a wonderful evening's entertainment.

    Not what I expected

by southernpeach on 8/5/11Fox Theatre Atlanta - Atlanta

Despite my tender years (I'm under 30), I LOVE Frank Sinatra. I was so excited when I found out about this show because the creator actually uses Frank's voice, not someone else with their interpretation of his music. This is the only reason I gave the show 2 stars and not 1. I was really disappointed with the overt sexuality of the show. To me, the 40's and 50's represent a certain wholesomeness--yes, we know the dirty was doing on behind closed doors but it remained there; it wasn't in your face. I (wrongly) expected the show to be a reflection of that time period, a certain Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers elegance. How wrong I was. At one point I remember wondering if we had accidentally wandered into a strip club. Every time the performers came out they had on less and less clothing and the performance became more provocative. As young as I am and likely more accepting of showing skin, I felt uncomfortable, so I can only imagine how the older folks felt. Save your money, buy the CD to enjoy the music, but skip the show.

    Come Fly with Me

by PDKS on 8/4/11Fox Theatre Atlanta - Atlanta

The music was great but the dancers didn't seem to be of high caliber. The event was only about 70 minutes long and certainly not worth the $175.00 for admission for two. I've been to the Fox serval times and this was by for the most disappointing entertainment I've seen. Very sad considering I took my wife as a suprise for her 60th birthday.

    Come Fly Away was disappointing

by dncfn on 8/4/11Fox Theatre Atlanta - Atlanta

Disappointing is the first word that comes to mind. The music was Sinatra..enough said. The band was phenomenal. So that tells you the dancing was lacking. The plot, had I not known it, would have been impossible to discern. The couple, Marty and Betsy, were the only couple whose story line could be followed easily. That couple stole the show. They had great chemistry and their dancing technique and performance was top notch.. The other couples were devoid of any believable or understandable character formation and maturation. The ladies that played Babe and Kate looked heavy and did not appear to be very well trained as dancers. Many of their positions and preparations for lifts and turns were incorrect and caused their partners to appear to be struggling when handling them. I found Dibble to be a good dancer but nothing he did really stood out and he and his partner never seemed to connect as a couple. She was a good dancer but shone most when dancing without him and he looked best when dancing alone also. John Selya needs to either lose weight or leave the stage as a leading male dancer. I was shocked to see how heavy and earth bound in his dancing he was. As he is the director for the tour he might need to concentrate on that position and leave the dancing to younger and more fit men. It took most of the performance to figure out the Hank character. It was distracting how he came in and out of the scenes and how he was left out of many of the dances. Cody, although I have enjoyed him in other musicals, seemed to never develop his Hank character. When on stage he never seemed to be eyeing the other ladies. It looked like he was just standing around and then just as suddenly ended up at the back of the stage putting the moves on them. This is why he and Kate fought, but had I not known this it would have taken the entire performance to figure it out, if at all. Even his dancing was subpar as he fell out of pirouttes or hopped them around. In his dance with Kate he seemed to struggle with the swinging and pulling of her throughout the entire dance. Even the catch at the end was less than dramatic. The ensemble did well but I think the boys were the better dancers. I have the feeling the girls were there for the sexual nuances more so than for their dancing abilities. It was up to the men to carry the work load which they did. The other problem I had was that I came to see different actors as Hank and Kate. When I looked at the casting for that night I was very disappointed, but I also noticed the male actor was not listed as part of the cast. Therefore, I spent $80.00 dollars for a seat in the balcony to see someone that was to be 1st cast for Hank and should be doing opening night, but he didn't dance. If I had known he was no longer with the tour I would not have spent that kind of money to see this musical. I am a lover of dancing and travel to a lot of venues to see dance performances. This was less than I expected, especially from a name like Twyla Tharp. I am of the opinion she has her casting wrong or has pulled and pushed her current cast into too many roles so that none of them have had a chance to master any of it.
