Cinematic Titanic is a reboot (of sorts) of the old Comedy Central TV series Mystery Science Theater 3000; the performers are five cast members and writers from the series, some going all the way back to the beginning. The show begins with a few fun bits; a couple of song performances, some stand-up, and other little surprises.
But the feature is and always has been making fun of bad, bad movies. The movie for this particular performance, "War of the Insects", was perfect, a below-B grade 60's Japanese horror film with plenty of odd, unusual and just plain unexplainable moments that provide plenty of opportunities for comments, jokes, and obscure references to fly. Even though MST3K ended over ten years ago, it's like the cast has never stopped riffing, and they were in top form, the jokes flying forth and hitting almost every target dead on. The language and jokes are definitely at more of a PG-13 level than MST3K's more PG-rated humor, but things never got truly vulgar and frankly the adult treatment is kind of refreshing. As a lovely bonus, the cast does a meet-and-greet afterward to sign autographs and have a brief chat, which for this longtime fan was the icing on a very sweet, tasty cake.
If you are an MST3K fan, it's a no-brainer. Go. Go now. For non-fans, those who like B-movies and witty humor will definitely appreciate it. Those who hate people who talk at the movies, though, need not apply.
