Cinderella on Tour

Cinderella is unique among the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals in that it was the famous pair's only musical written for television. The 1957 debut of Cinderella featured musical-theater legend Julie Andrews in the title role, playing handmaiden to her stepmother and stepsisters after her father's passing.

In keeping with the storyline of the classic folktale, the musical follows Cinderella as she hopes for a better life, or at least one far away from her family members' demands. She is granted that wish by a fairy godmother who, through her magical transformations of the young woman and a nearby pumpkin, helps brings Cinderella tantalizingly close to the destiny about which she dreams.

In 2013, a new take on Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella debuted on Broadway, with a script updated by Douglas Carter Beane (To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Xanadu). The updated version of the story adds a few more characters and intrigue-filled plot twists, and — most notably — makes one stepsister at least somewhat sympathetic to Cinderella's plight.

The soundtrack also includes four Rodgers & Hammerstein songs that weren't in the original run of the show, which further expand the range of the plot. Laura Osnes (Grease, South Pacific) and Santino Fontana (Frozen, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) originated the roles of Ella and Prince Topher on Broadway, while Carly Rae Jepsen and Keke Palmer also played the title character during the production's Broadway run.

The Broadway run of Beane's Cinderella revival closed in January 2015, but the show is still enchanting audiences around the world with its touring production. Starring Kaitlyn Mayse as Ella, Lukas James Miller as Topher, and Zina Ellis as the fairy godmother Marie, this Cinderella demonstrates how with a little magic and a sprinkle or two of fairy dust, anyone can be who they want to be.

I grew up with the Rogers and Hammerstein movie of "Cinderella," I even have it on VHS and now own it on DVD. I was so excited to know that it was showing in Grand Rapids so I had to get tickets. This production was not a let down by no means. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to see it again!

    I'M A HOPELESS ROMANTIC

by Veggietaleseller on 10/5/16DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

I went to Cinderella with more excitement than I could contain. The minute Cinderella sang the first few bars of "10 minutes ago" I started to tear up with joy! I grew up with Rodgers and Hammerstein's TV version my entire childhood as I would wait expectantly every year to see. I really loved hearing all of my favorite and familiar songs that I can sing by heart. It was cute to hear some of the added updated dialogue but I am a Cinderella purist and was hoping they would't change the story greatly. For the most part, I really loved the entire musical but wished they wouldn't have changed the scene where she dropped the shoe after the original ball and totally added another story onto the original. The costumes were fabulous and I also loved the quick change artistry behind several of them. The prince's costume in his first scene was amazingly creative and handsome! Kudos to the costume designers!! In this day of trying to make everything PC some things cannot be improved upon and Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella is definitely one of them!!

    Cinderella Meets Les Miserables

by MorningGlo on 10/5/16DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

This weekend I took my daughter and grand daughter to see the Broadway Theater Guild production of Cinderella by Rogers and Hammerstein. This musical was broadcast on TV annually when I was a little girl and I LOVED it! Nearly 60 years later I can still sing most of the lyrics to every song and I couldn't wait to share it with the next 2 generations of my family. The music and the sets and the performers did not disappoint. However, this production added a few unwanted twists to this beloved story. In the first scene we meet Jean-Michel, a peasant with a social activist agenda, who is sweet on one of the step sisters, but step mom disapproves. He tries and fails to inform the clueless prince about the plight of the poor people. The prince’s evil adviser decides that a ball, given as a method for finding a bride, would be just the thing to distract the people from their political unrest. Jean-Michel enlists Cinderella’s help to inform the prince of the injustices of the poor. The story goes it’s usual course until the clock strikes 12. Cinderella makes her hasty adieu to the prince but manages an “Oh by the way, the government is stealing land from poor people, so you should look into that” before she leaves. Then she runs down the stairs, looses her shoe, runs BACK for it, and disappears into the night in full possession of both glass slippers. End of act one. WHAT??? Act two: the prince is giving a banquet this time to get the mystery girl to show up again. Cinderella and the nice step sister hatch a plan to get Cinderella to the banquet which is again foiled by the evil step mother. The fairy godmother supplies another dress and issues another midnight curfew. Cinderella is reunited with the prince and gets him to listen to Jean-Michel and a group of peasants with grievances. The prince proposes to create a new governmental office of prime minister and have an election. He nominates Jean-Michel and the evil adviser as the two candidates. The clock strikes 12. This time Cinderella leaves a shoe behind on purpose. Sometime later everybody gets to try on the shoe until it is finally Cinderella’s turn and, ta-da, the shoe fits. Cue the wedding party—they sing something NOT written by Rogers or Hammerstein about dreams and the music in you, or something, and …THE END! The play was still enjoyable, especially if you didn't come in with a bag full of childhood memories, but the political thread running through it took away a lot of the poignancy of this sweet, romantic story about the joyful reward gained by someone who perseveres in the face of adversity and repays evil with good. Dear Broadway Producers, if you want to turn Cinderella into political satire, fine. Write your own musical and leave Rogers and Hammerstein's alone.

    Young Heart, Big Fan

by MichiganDoll on 10/5/16DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

This was my youngest daughter's first musical of this caliber and it did not disappoint. She was mesmerized from the very beginning. I saw her clap sometimes even before the rest of the audience did. Her little heart holds a growing love for the theater. All the staff was extremely courteous and friendly.

I took my two daughters to this show and we had a Great and Memorable time!! My daughters (in their 20's) were very glad they got to see the show. The cast was awesome! So much talent! in the acting and their singing!!! A dream come true for myself!! I have searched and searched for the DVD of this exact Cinderella!! (RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN'S) and was able to purchase it at the show!! My Girls had to listening to me sing "In My Own Little Corner, In My Own Little Chair, I can be whatever I want to be!!" over an over! I wish I could have come back the next night and see the show again!! What a GREAT TIME!! This was our first time to an event at DeVos Performance Hall. I don't know what the view is like in the balcony, but I doubt there is a bad seat in the house. Hope to be able to go to other shows in the future!

    Fabulous Show! Fantastic Cast!

by alivingreminder on 10/4/16DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

Cinderella was fantastic! I have two teen daughters and this was their first Broadway show. The cast was entertaining and fun. The set was intricate and intriguing. Seamless set changes and the costume changes were amazing - especially Cinderella's dress and the multiple changes she made throughout the show. I absolutely loved the ending. Forgiveness is the way to go. Kindness is worth it.
