Ten years ago, Greg Gonzalez was having a really rough Valentine's Day. Freshly heartbroken with no hope of reconciliation, he spent two hours driving from his hometown El Paso to play a show, and he listened to Sade's "By Your Side" on repeat both ways. "The experience that day stuck in my bones--it was an idea that I couldn't forget," says Gonzalez, the frontman of Cigarettes After Sex. "I thought, how do I make a record that feels like that?"
Filled with raw, imagistic, sometimes smutty vignettes set to entrancing, slowburn pop songs, Gonzalez knows how to capture every emotion a romantic arc inspires. But where previous albums have drawn from an amalgam of relationships, for the most part, his anticipated third album 'X's' centralizes on just one relationship that spanned four years. "The record feels brutal," admits Gonzalez. "I could sit and talk about this loss to someone, but that wouldn't scratch the surface. I have to really write about it, sing about it, have the music, and then I can start to analyze and learn from it. Or just relive it--in a good way. I don't have that Eternal Sunshine-thing of wanting to forget."
This period was one of immense personal growth for Gonzalez, but it was also during these years that Cigarettes After Sex--completed by drummer Jacob Tomsky and bassist Randall Miller--hit staggering new levels in their career, transitioning from a preeminent indie act to one of the most globally accomplished acts across any genre.
And still, Cigarettes After Sex maintain their mystique, fans sharing their music like an illicit secret and this poignant ten song collection will certainly stoke the flames. While continuing to observe classic pop song structures, Gonzalez has moved away from the prior sonic touchstones of the '50s and '60s, finding himself now drawn to a '70s/'80s slow dance. While (in typical Cigarettes style) these changes may be subtle, the overall resulting energy is akin to disco ball-refracted tears on the dance floor.
staff was very friendly and helpful, band was amazing!
Been to four concerts, Los Angeles, San Diego, Denver, Ogden… they are great at both indoor and outdoor venues. Many people record and will block your view in GA, so go for assigned seating if available and just enjoy. The sound is great, the show is great, you will want to watch them again. I know I will.
I had been listening to cigarettes after sex since middle school so when I found out about their Texas tour I knew I had to see them and it was honestly a dream to hear them live and it felt very intimate and touching<3
they could’ve reminded us about not taking our camera inside the crowd was annoying everyone had their phone up way too high preventing us to see not enough water was passed around and the visuals were lacking
the concert was truly the best. it was so sweet and heavenly. i would love to experience it again, but i think water bottles should be free/provided as soon as you walk through the doors. $11 for two waters is crazy
Apart from 713 Music Hall’s incredible sound system and FOH mixer doing an amazing job the lighting crew also blew me away with the back lighting, it looked stunning. Cigarettes after sex was amazing, I will never forget !!! Greg looked like Jesus being resurrected when they opened the curtains! As always the band sounded angelic!!!!
i’m not a die hard cas fan but i do love listening to their music and the singer has a beautiful voice. i attended the show in houston at 713 music hall and had 300-GA standing tickets. we got there a bit late and it was super hard to find a spot to stand a see so my view wasn’t the best but the music was amazing. not only that but the crowd was amazing and very respectful.
Bummer that so many tickets were sold and standing room only. We have been to other concerts at this venue with assigned seat and it was so much nicer. I mean this concert was geared for young crowd so they we’re probably fine packing in on top of eachother but we left before the first song was over. Just good to note that if this venue does not have assigned seating and only GA it is super packed
Great concert. Lasted 1:30 hrs. Started 30 min late. Sound was not clear. Don Haskins Center needs updating there sound. It not for concerts it’s for games. The Venue is very important to enjoy the sound and songs and mostly with this band that literally has no show just great music to offer.
Took my daughter and niece to see them and I had only heard one song because my daughter listens to them and it was better than I expected I liked most of the songs.
Cigarettes After Sex have been my favorite band for a few years now, since I first heard their music I was absolutely bewitched. When I found out they were playing here in Houston I was absolutely bouncing off the walls. I listen to their songs every single day and have almost all memorized by heart! I was lucky to get GA standing and happened to get right up front by the stage. Once they finally began to play, it felt like the atmosphere changed. Greg’s voice is insanely beautiful and captivating - I couldn’t take my eyes off the stage. I was super happy their song choices since they played my favorite one last (Opera House) which I loved it. I brought a sign saying “I will learn how to play guitar if you give me a pick, pretty please” as a joke; I didn’t have very high hopes until they began to wall of the stage. I received one from Randy which was so cool I was immensely happy. Then Greg also stared to walk off the stage and he handed me one FIRST! He literally smiled at me and put it in my hand - I was shaking so much. I don’t think I can explain the overwhelming joy I felt having someone I admire and look up to so much do such a small gesture that actually made my life so much better. 11/10 concert, although most people didn’t really seem to care that much for their other songs that weren’t “popular”. Best day of my life.
Honestly i loved every second of it they stoped to check up on a fan that fainted beautifully souls
Concert was amazing, all of the set up and getting into the venue was a breeze.
I’ve been to 15 different concerts this year, and this one was at the top of my list. They sounded outstanding and the amphitheater was the perfect spot for this band! I would 10/10 recommend, and I will see them again.
Amazing band, the tickets were pretty cheap and an amazing vibe.
The songs, the venue and most especially the band were perfect. It was one of those shows were everyone is tuned in and having an experience and happy. I’ll treasure that and would absolutely tell someone to go and do the same.
Greg and company were great. However, who are the parents that are allowing their teenage daughters to listen to this band?! 90% of the crowd were teeny boppers with no respect for themselves or others.
omg it was so good!! i loved it so much but they were kinda late but i don't mind that. Other than that they performed amazingly!!
I love Cigarettes After Sex. It was a great concert, however there were issues with the audio/feedback system. It was whining/squeaking as they were performing. And the visuals they have are really cool and they fit CAS’s vibe. Although it’s not the most fun when 80% of the fans are just recording the whole concert and all you see is phones recording in the audience.
i love them and i went to their concert sept 15 and had so much fun they sound amazing live ❤️
