CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE IN CONCERT:

Virtuoso jazz bassist Christian McBride comes from a long line of accomplished bass players, and it shows. At his concerts McBride plays with the elegance and poise of a true veteran, demonstrating the impressive chops that have earned him three Grammys and landed him on more than 300 recordings. From collaborations with James Brown and Sting to his latest role as big band leader, McBride possesses a timeless showmanship that he'll bring to the stage on his upcoming tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

During his childhood, Philadelphia-born Christian McBride was mentored by his father and great uncle -- both talented bass players. Hailed as a teen prodigy, McBride joined jazz saxophonist Bobby Watson's group at age 17 before going on to play in the bands of numerous other legends including Benny Golson, Milt Jackson, and J.J. Johnson. He made his album debut as a solo player in 1995 with Gettin' To It, and has released more than ten solo albums and toured extensively since then. Over the course of his decorated career he has collaborated with a number of jazz luminaries including Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock and played as a sideman with such diverse artists as Paul McCartney, Queen Latifah, and Celine Dion. Back on the road McBride will treat ticket buyers to his unforgettable musicianship on a string of highly anticipated dates.

    Ella and Dizzy Centennial Celebration

by Happyinmyskin on 11/15/17New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

We loved the show!!! My husband and I came up from DC for this and we were definitely not disappointed. I listen to WGBO in Newark online and heard about the Centennial. I told my husband that I was going no matter who chose to go with me. He's a professional drummer here in DC and is not easily impressed but he consented to come. We were impressed by the quality of the music, the performers and the arrangement and pacing of the show. It turns out that my husband has been following Christian McBride for years. He performs at the Kennedy Center so I will be watching for him. NJPAC is likely to see us again though we're not sure when but definitely for the James Moody Jazz Festival next year.

    Fabulous Moody Festival Finale

by XYME on 11/15/17New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

Christian McBride organized and conducted a wonderful blend of spectacular instrumental and vocal music that recalled Dizzy and Ella, and displayed the outstanding musicality of the band and the invited guests. It was an evening that we will not forget.

    Dizzy, Ella and Gregory

by veseditoror on 11/15/17New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

What more could you ask for? A great big band led by Christian McBride, plus singers Gregory Porter, Lizz Wright and Valerie Simpson, rocked the stage of Prudential Hall.

Excellent but why couldn't it last...forever

by LePeche on 11/15/17New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

I didn't think a bass and voice could be so completely entertaining. My favorite artists are almost always vocalists. I am a major Dianne Reeves fan. It was wonderful seeing her in such an intimate setting and sharing the platform with such an awesome peer. I was 6 rows from the stage. Watching Christian McBride play was almost like witnessing an erotic act as he caressed his bass. To listen only would be to miss so much of the effect. As a result, I checked out his 2011 Conversations album. I would welcome an opportunity to see them together again. There are not enough superlatives to describe McBride and Reeves one on one.

by Chakula on 11/15/17New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

This is the music of a people. Music that had a style and people dressed to show their appreciation for a true art form, that came out a people from their heart as a gift to the world.

    Ella & Dizzy Spirits Evoked

by MusiqueNoir on 11/15/17New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

McChristian Orchestra, trumpeter Sean Jones and violinist Regina Carter made musical magic and did great service to Dizzy's compositions and genius as an artist. Lizz Wright and Gregory Porter transported all present to the higher plain of Ella's musical repertoire and incredible musicianship. A fan of Valerie Simpson but her gift is in accompanying herself on the piano as she rocks her own compositions; renditions of the American Songbook not her strength.

    A Magical Evening

The mutual admiration was evident as these two consummate pros told great stories, sung and made beautiful music together. I really think Dianne Reeves is a national treasure.

by fwfurey on 11/13/17New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

Trip thru time with 2 of the Greats. Each shared captivating stories of not only their beginnings but stories relevant to other Big Time Artists. Stories were as Big as the music itself.

    Piano Man Steals The Show

Christian McBride was awesome. But, Emmit Cohen stole the show with his swingin' piano fingers.

    Fantastic

by markmusic on 1/19/16Ritz Theatre - Jacksonville

This was a 2 for 1 because The Gary Starling Group opened, and then the trio was amazing. Very upbeat, intense playing from all three, maybe the best trio around today. Certainly the best upright bassist I have ever heard. The Ritz Theater has great acoustics.

    Not enough Hornsby/McBride Fusion

by JadeAlter on 11/15/15New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

I love both Bruce Hornsby and Christian McBride and I understand that it was a One on One event. But could have been more music and a little less conversation. But I still enjoyed the evening. Good Event!

    Bruce Hornsby was disappointing

by Drum63 on 11/15/15New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

Expected to hear more piano playing by Bruce Horsby and more bass playong by Chrstian McBride, instead the majority of the performance was spent talking about Bruce Hornsby's past and his playing of basketball and his sports stories.

    What a great birthday gift!!!!

by CinnamonD on 9/22/15New Jersey Performing Arts Center - Newark

I loved this event! Hopefully, McBride will be continuing his One on One series with other artists/musical associates. I am a new fan of McBride. He can definitely work that bass! With regard to Metheny, I make sure to see him perform once a year! I have been doing this for as long as I can remember. He NEVER disappoints. McBride and Metheny played a little music, then talked a bit, then involved the audience in a musical game. The show could have been longer and I would have loved if Metheny came back for one encore performance. It was an honor to hear Metheny speak about his music. He is passionate and modest. Great show!!!!!!!!
