Citrus Bowl History

The Citrus Bowl in Orlando is one of college football's signature events, a burst of Florida sunshine on New Year's Day. The game, traditionally played on January 1, usually pits an SEC team against a representative from the Big Ten.

The event was born in 1947 as the Tangerine Bowl, with the Catawba Indians beating the Maryville Scots, 31-6. The initial sponsors were members of a local Elks Lodge who each put up $100 to cover expenses. Proceeds went to the Harry Anna Children's Hospital, which is why the bowl would come to be known as the "Little Bowl with the Big Heart." The stadium, built in 1936 under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration, accommodated just 8,900 fans.

Today the stadium — now called Camping World Stadium — is a fully modern, 65,000-capacity facility, and the Citrus Bowl is a centerpiece of the bowl season. While it lacks the pageantry of the Rose Bowl on the other side of the country, the game is rich with the sport's history, both bad and good. The unbeaten 1955 Hillsdale College football team refused an invitation to the bowl after officials said the school's four black players would not be allowed to play. Likewise, University of Buffalo players in 1958 elected to skip the game because its two black players would have been kept off the field. But by 1966, the color line had been lifted, and Morgan State became the first historically black college to play in the bowl. The Bears went on to beat the West Chester Golden Rams, 14-6.

Other memorable games include the 1996 Citrus Bowl, in which fourth-ranked Tennessee beat fourth-ranked Ohio State, 20-14, and the 1969 edition, in which Toledo hung 56 points on Davidson, a bowl record that stands today.

Had a great time at the Citrus Bowl - easy to get in and easy to get out of the parking lot at the end. Thanks for the experience.

Easy access to the parking area. View of the game from the seats was amazing. The only downside, the person seating next to me was of “size” and couldn’t properly sit in their seat. Resulting in an excessive encroachment onto me and my seat. Something must be done when individuals clearly cannot fit in a seat prior to entry into any facility.

  • Too many stairs

by Great Stadium Not Handicapped Friendly on 1/4/24Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

The stadium was great but the stadium people did not know where ads seats were. Had to go to 5 different people on two different levels to find my seat.

The Citrus Bowl was very enjoyable. Dealing with Ticketmaster should be considered criminal.

I think Orlando needs a new stadium at a different location. It’s old and not in the safest area. They me an NFL team as well.

We had a wonderful time at the Citrus Bowl. The stadium was very nice and really clean. The fan experience was well thought out and couldn’t have been better. Our seats were also comfortable and we had plenty of room.

by TVM on 1/4/24Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

Overall experience was great. Pregame Fan experience and fans in general were having a great time, very family friendly atmosphere. Great job by the Organizers. Only minor complaint is that some of the bathrooms needed servicing. Appeared to have been the same ones used for the prior Bowl game a few days earlier.

  • Citrus Bowl Gameday

by VoLucy on 1/4/24Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

Easy to enter, though parking limited. Field much improved from years past. WiFi good. Glad bands were allowed to perform halftime and pregame. Bands were great! Entertainer was okay, but sound system setup was not good. Limited good choices of quality food- threw away and ate afterwards. Citrus Bowl staff was friendly and helpful and bathrooms clean. Great game experience and that’s what we came for🙌 Security around stadium was excellent! GBO!

  • Good Game, poor stadium

    by Couch702 on 1/4/24Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 3 out of 5

The stadium is not accommodating to handicap attendees. Prior to the event, I wasn't able to obtain handicap seating. We purchased seats on the lower level near the entrance to avoid a lot of walking. However the access to our seats was blocked and we were unable to get to our seats without walking over half the stadium to find someone that could tell us how to access them. Everyone told us we needed to take the stairs. Yet my wife cannot walk up stairs and down stairs. Then had to walk over have the stadium to find an escalator. Camping world stadium does not care about assisting handicap patrons.

  • Had a great time!!!

by BonBon on 1/5/23Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

Getting in early was super. No waiting in line. Seats were great, game was real good. There were plenty of food and drink vendors, hence, kept lines to min. It was just a happy crowd that wanted to watch a football game! Thank you! Mean it!

  • Bad advertising for Fan Zone, No toilet paper in car park

    by S. C. on 1/5/23Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 2 out of 5

The porta potties in parking lot #3 did not have any toilet paper in them, and we were among the first 20 cars to arrive. Also, the Fan Zone area was not well advertised, and we did not see it until after the game was over when we on the highway heading home. The stadium area where we were seated was disgraceful! It was obvious that the stadium had not been cleaned after the previous Cheez-It Bowl on Dec 29th, and it is inexcusable! There were candy wrappers, drink cups, old French fries trodden on as well as other various types of trash. My wife and I arrived at our seats very early, with hardly anyone else around so it was not a case of people who had already arrived dropping the trash. To attend a major sporting event at one of the nation's best-known cities and arrive at a stadium in such a poor state of cleanliness was very disappointing; it is therefore no surprise that Orlando was not chosen as one of the host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup! I will think twice about attending an event there in the future.

  • Blowout

by Rich on 1/5/23Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

Worst foot ball game ever attended. Stadium was ok as usual. Just the game was poorly attended and one sided competition.

  • Citrus bowl

by TVM on 1/5/23Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

Pre game fan fest was better than it has been in the past mainly because there were a few more food options. Fest can be enhanced with a few more food options. DJ was great. Lots of fun activities for kids. Overall, great job by Cheez-It!!

  • Awesome event and great experience

by DH on 1/5/23Camping World Stadium - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

Ticketmaster did great with this event. Easy purchase and all the information needed to get into the venue and where to park as well. Definitely a good deal all around and I’d do it again.

My family of 4 and I had a great time at the game. Stadium is really nice for an older venue. Solid food and drink options plus easy parking. One thing that would be nice to have is more restaurants/bars around the stadium for before and after the game. There really isn’t much. Overall it was a really fun day.
