Citrus Bowl History

The Citrus Bowl in Orlando is one of college football's signature events, a burst of Florida sunshine on New Year's Day. The game, traditionally played on January 1, usually pits an SEC team against a representative from the Big Ten.

The event was born in 1947 as the Tangerine Bowl, with the Catawba Indians beating the Maryville Scots, 31-6. The initial sponsors were members of a local Elks Lodge who each put up $100 to cover expenses. Proceeds went to the Harry Anna Children's Hospital, which is why the bowl would come to be known as the "Little Bowl with the Big Heart." The stadium, built in 1936 under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration, accommodated just 8,900 fans.

Today the stadium — now called Camping World Stadium — is a fully modern, 65,000-capacity facility, and the Citrus Bowl is a centerpiece of the bowl season. While it lacks the pageantry of the Rose Bowl on the other side of the country, the game is rich with the sport's history, both bad and good. The unbeaten 1955 Hillsdale College football team refused an invitation to the bowl after officials said the school's four black players would not be allowed to play. Likewise, University of Buffalo players in 1958 elected to skip the game because its two black players would have been kept off the field. But by 1966, the color line had been lifted, and Morgan State became the first historically black college to play in the bowl. The Bears went on to beat the West Chester Golden Rams, 14-6.

Other memorable games include the 1996 Citrus Bowl, in which fourth-ranked Tennessee beat fourth-ranked Ohio State, 20-14, and the 1969 edition, in which Toledo hung 56 points on Davidson, a bowl record that stands today.

  • A blast in Orlando! Gamecocks win #11.

The Florida Citrus Bowl was a wonderful venue, the experience was a ton of fun and our Gamecocks took it to a good Nebraska team with some remarkable plays and stellar defense in critical situations. Even though Nebraska coach Bo Pelini was less than gracious, as were some of the cheap shots from his team, nothing could dampen the spirits of the victorious Gamecock Nation. Thank you for putting on a great bowl game.

GO GAMECOCKS! Fantastic venue, especially for its age. Capitol One put on a wonderful show and made the field look absolutely perfect. Bravo to Florida's Citrus Bowl and Capitol One...oh yeah and again GO GAMECOCKS!!!

It's an old, small stadium, set in an unexciting, undesirable part of town. That being said, it is what it is, and the fact that it's small I suppose ends up making it some what quaint, and the view from your seats probably isn't as bad as a large stadium when your in the nose bleeds. As far as all of the Florida bowls go, it's probably pretty much a no brainer to say it's the worst venue of all four sites, but of course the other three are NFL stadiums.

Was a great game. The stadium food prices are the most expensive I have ever come across. It is a shame that those prices are priced to it's visiting guest. The stadium executives should be ashamed of themselves.

-Great weather and reasonably priced seats -The Citrus Bowl stadium is in need of a renovation-food vending was not good and stadium is old and just kind of blah -Orlando is a great venue

  • Great Game, So-So Stadium

    by GamecockFan94 on 1/4/12Florida Citrus Bowl - OrlandoRating: 3 out of 5

My team won so the game itself was great, but I've been in better stadiums. Specifically, the Citrus Bowl Jumbotron looked more like a big screen TV. It was small and difficult to see until the sun went behind some clouds. Also, the big dramatic entry of our team to our start-of-game fight song and video ("Fanfare for the Common Man") was absolutely ruined, playing jumpily as if the stadium people were just running it off YouTube with a dial-up connection.

The football game was great. The fans and atmosphere were stellar. The field looked great. The old Citrus Bowl stadium is in need of serious help. The food vendors inside were not good. The food choices were horrible. Overall my son and I enjoyed the game and will go again.

My team won - whoo hoo!!!! For that reason alone, I would give it 5 stars!! BUT the Citrus Bowl itself drags this rating down 2 stars. I went to the bathroom in the first quarter and NONE of the stalls had toilet paper, there was only 1 soap dispenser with anything in it and there were zero paper towels. The facility needs a serious updating and needs to be staffed with people who actually WORK. I paid $85 plus a crazy amount in convenience & handling by TM not to mention parking... Come on, guys. Get it together!

  • "Crappy Seats"

by BIGCONSMOM on 1/4/12Florida Citrus Bowl - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

The tickets were a Christmas present for my son. He had a blast, but the only downside is they were under the lights and the birds nesting above pooped on his friend to his right and a little while later the birds pooped on his friend to the left. My son lucked out and didn't get popped on, but I wouldn't recommend these seat unless you're a bird lover!

Nebraska was crap. S. Carolina pretty much owned the Huskers all game with speed. Does Taylor Martinez even know how to throw a pass? The organization with shuttles to/from Amway were very nice.

Great weather...awesome fans...perfect company...and an amazing performance by the Alabama Crimson Tide! Having the opportunity to watch so many of our favorite Bama players in their last game was so exciting. What a terrific way to start 2011. Thanks for the hospitality, Capital One Bowl.

Had a good experience overall. The surrounding area is very run down and reminded me of Legion Field in Birmingham.

  • Instant classic (if yours is the winning team)!

We had seats in the upper deck, but the view was amazing. Being an Alabama fan, I loved the result of the game. Besides that, the entertainment, bands, etc. were great. Also, I loved the flyover after the National Anthem.

  • UPRIGHTS CLUB

    by JEROME51250 on 1/6/11CAPITAL ONE BOWL - ORLANDORating: 3 out of 5

I HAVE BEEN GOING TO CHAMPS SPORTS BOWL AND CAPITAL ONE BOWL FOR YEARS NOW. THE LAST THREE YEARS I HAVE BEEN ATTENDING THE GAME IN THE UPRIGHTS CLUB IN THE END ZONE. THE CONCEPT IS EXCELLENT. THE TICKET PRICES ARE SET RIGHT FOR WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO GET. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE BARTENDERS, BETTER LIQUOR, MORE STANDING/BISTRO AREAS TO EAT, MORE LOUNGING AREAS. THIS YEAR WAS THE WORST. PEOPLE WERE MILLING ABOUT HOLDING PLATES BECAUSE THERE WERE NOT ENOUGH EATING AREAS. I DID ENJOY THE FACT THEY BROUGHT IN TEMP PRIVATE RESTROOMS, HOWEVER THEY MADE NO PROVISIONS TO PUMP THE HOLDING TANKS AND CLOSED THE RESTROOMS DOWN. WE THEN HAD TO WALK FAR TO THE PUBLIC RESTROOMS. THERE WERE WAY MORE ASSIGNED SEATS SOLD THIS YEAR FOR THE UPRIGHTS CLUB. WE WERE SHOULDER TO SHOULDER. THEY CUT THE LIQUOR OFF AT THE END OF THE THIRD QUARTER AGAIN. THIS DID HAPPEN LAST YEAR ALSO, SO I KNEW. I THINK IT SHOULD GO TO THE END OF THE GAME. WHEN CONFRONTED THE PERSON IN CHARGE WAS VERY DEFENSIVE. THEY STILL HAVE NOT PROVIDED A NEW JUMBO TRON AT THE OTHER END OF THE FIELD. IT WAS THE SAME SHOW THIS YEAR WITH THE CHEERLEADERS AT HALF TIME. NEED TO SPEND SOME MONEY. THIS IS ORLANDO AND WE NEED TO HAVE A BETTER SHOW. SPEND SOME OF THOSE PROFITS. LIKE I SAID THE CONCEPT IS GOOD BUT THEY COULD ADD ANOTHER TENT AND JOIN THEM, ADD SEATING, STAFF AND MAKE PROVISIONS FOR PUMPING RESTROOMS, NEW HALF TIME SHOW. THE PRIME RIB CARVER CUT SUCH LITTLE PIECES HE ACTED LIKE HE WAS SAVING IT FOR HIMSELF. LOL

My family was glad to be able to experience the bowl game in sunny Florida...concession stand service, however, was a bust! Lines long (over 50 ft) and slow- moved 15 ft in 10 minutes! Concession stand ran out of drinks and hot dogs just after the third quarter began. Glad we weren't too thirsty or hungry. One drink seller came near us through the entire game.

  • This event was done very poorly.

by DShooter on 1/5/11Florida Citrus Bowl - OrlandoRating: 1 out of 5

From the start this bowl game was not planed well, nor did it come off as a success. I was embarrassed for Orlando at how the bowl game was handled. First, the landings where the escalator is and people walked were covered with bird do do (D entrance). The pre game was good with the bands, until the high school kids started dancing and the entertainment was very amateur including the group that played the Star Spangle Banner. When you pay the price of tickets that we paid, we want to see known artist and celebrities sing not the form of entertainment we received. That goes for the half time show as well. The bowl games mostly had adults attend and adults really do not like that type of half time show. One more thing, there was a little American flag on the field for the Star Spangle Banner. Refer to the Sugar Bowl and watch how they honored the flag. The jets going over the field was great and the best part of the entire show. I was in a car crash two months ago and left third quarter because there are no backs on the seats of the stands. My back was killing me. I went to the escalators and they were only going one way and that was up. I went to the only elevator and was told by the security guard that only media could use the elevators. That left me to walk down from the top of the stadium all the way down to the ground. He refused to allow me handicap access. Until I sought after a policeman to insist that he allow me to enter the elevator, did he let me go down. That stadium needs to have new management and money spent to improve the seating and many other things. It also needs to be cleaned from top to bottom. Capital One did a good job advertising themselves and the pre game area where games and challenges took place (outside the stadium) was done very well. That stadium and the management of that stadium have to go.

Always a great time. I bought tickets before the teams were determined.
