Citrus Bowl History

The Citrus Bowl in Orlando is one of college football's signature events, a burst of Florida sunshine on New Year's Day. The game, traditionally played on January 1, usually pits an SEC team against a representative from the Big Ten.

The event was born in 1947 as the Tangerine Bowl, with the Catawba Indians beating the Maryville Scots, 31-6. The initial sponsors were members of a local Elks Lodge who each put up $100 to cover expenses. Proceeds went to the Harry Anna Children's Hospital, which is why the bowl would come to be known as the "Little Bowl with the Big Heart." The stadium, built in 1936 under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration, accommodated just 8,900 fans.

Today the stadium — now called Camping World Stadium — is a fully modern, 65,000-capacity facility, and the Citrus Bowl is a centerpiece of the bowl season. While it lacks the pageantry of the Rose Bowl on the other side of the country, the game is rich with the sport's history, both bad and good. The unbeaten 1955 Hillsdale College football team refused an invitation to the bowl after officials said the school's four black players would not be allowed to play. Likewise, University of Buffalo players in 1958 elected to skip the game because its two black players would have been kept off the field. But by 1966, the color line had been lifted, and Morgan State became the first historically black college to play in the bowl. The Bears went on to beat the West Chester Golden Rams, 14-6.

Other memorable games include the 1996 Citrus Bowl, in which fourth-ranked Tennessee beat fourth-ranked Ohio State, 20-14, and the 1969 edition, in which Toledo hung 56 points on Davidson, a bowl record that stands today.

Everything was awesome except the stadium concessions only accepted cash...no cards.

  • Game was awesome, very well run

    by jonnyo24 on 1/4/14Florida Citrus Bowl - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

The event was very well run. I would've had no idea that there were 56,000+ people because it was so well run. I highly recommend the pregame FanFest and the concert. Hunter Hayes played for well over an hour before the game. At halftime, there were audio issues and he only got to play one song. Overall, the game was an incredible experience and I plan on returning in the future.

  • Awesome Experience

Fantastic location of seating. Seats were somewhat small and close in nature. However the entire facility was that way, not just this section.

  • Really unforgettable day!!!

Our first American Football game day! Did not know what to expect, but this was the top family event of our holiday!!! Not comparable with a soccer match in Europe

  • Uprights Club was well worth the price.

Great experience at the Capital One Bowl game (Citrus Bowl facility) The seats in this section are field level in the end zone. They included a parking pass Lot 1 (very close to stadium) access to the Air Conditioned tent, Private restroom facilities, Full buffet meal (wings buffalo & teriyaki, salad, carving stations, Cheese grits & shrimp, sausage, many dips, Full bar and a half time desert (ice cream sundaes, cookies, brownies etc) What more can I say. These tickets are the best choice If you want a first class experience.

  • A Slugfest

by IntelPlnrRich on 1/4/13Florida Citrus Bowl - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

This is the second year in a row I have attended the Capital One Bowl Game -- I would gladly go again. The facility, especially the field, was very well maintained; and the Event Staff and Crew (Gold and Black Shirts) were very professional and always handy to answer questions or direct someone to their seats. The game was a slugfest between two top notch teams. The game went back and forth through the first three quarters as the Cornhuskers and Bulldogs traded scores. The stake in the heart of the Nebraska was team the 87 yard TD pass at the 11:07 mark of the 4th quarter. That gave Georgia a 14-point lead they would never relinquish. Sadly, despite a brave effort, my beloved Cornhuskers went down to defeat. Despite the loss it was a great game on an exceptionally temperate afternoon in central Florida. Thanks for a fabulous family outing and a memorable game.

  • Bowl Game

    by Huey508 on 1/4/13Florida Citrus Bowl - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

Nebraska vs Georgia was an excellent game. Entertaining and competitive. Stadium food is just that, okay but nothing to rave about. The facility was clean and the field was first class. Dirks Bentley was great at the per-game festivities and the halftime show. Complaint: please have two areas for the athletes to try their hand at passing receiving etc. one area for the adults and one for kids. The lines get too long.

  • Terrific event all around

by CapitalBowlBound on 1/3/13Florida Citrus Bowl - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

The organization of this year's event was fantastic. From the Dierks Bentley and football Fanfest before the game, to the exciting football game, the highly entertaining halftime show and traffic organization after. My family and I had a wonderful time.

by TXNikki on 1/3/13Florida Citrus Bowl - OrlandoRating: 5 out of 5

GA and Nebraska gave the fans a very exciting game! We stayed to the end which is something we never do because this bowl game is normally a blowout. The stadium is great! The food is very pricey but that's expected at these types of events.

  • Stadium is a pit

    by CPG13 on 1/3/13Florida Citrus Bowl - OrlandoRating: 3 out of 5

Game was great - venue was disgusting - stadium old, unkept, concessions were over priced, food was miserable - how Does Orlando keep this game given the delapidated facility - compares very poorly to venues for the Chik-fil-a and Outback bowls - you go for the game and to support your teambut I'd never go to this bowl absent my team playing in the game

  • by FBQ3 on 1/3/13Florida Citrus Bowl - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

Other than food and drink prices, everything was great. $5.00 for a glass of tea and $8.00 for a corn dog is a BIT high. City did good doing the people shuttle to off site parking.

  • Stage Area

    by GDAWG88 on 1/3/13Florida Citrus Bowl - OrlandoRating: 1 out of 5

I was very upset when I saw that there was more stage area for the none VIP-AREA...I could have saved money and had a better view of the stage.

  • Great day!

  • Capital Bowl

by ernor on 1/13/12Florida Citrus Bowl - OrlandoRating: 3 out of 5

We had a great view even though we were in the upper level. We parked at one of the lots for the Citrus Bowl and it was quick, easy and safe. The area around the Bowl is not safe, so book a hotel room that near Disney/Seaworld - 15/20 minutes away from the stadium. The actual facilities could use some updating (i.e. bathrooms are very old and rusty) Food was awful, eat before you go into the stadium - the worse $12 ever spent and we eat many stadiums.

  • Great event even in Defeat

    by JimE3 on 1/12/12Florida Citrus Bowl - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

The Capital One Bowl put on a great event. Yes, it is sad to lose--especially when you pay money to travel and watch the game. But the experience overall was great. Thankfully the weather was perfect! The South Carolina fans were quite respectful in victory as a general rule. The before game opportunities were fun. The general atmosphere was terrific! We had tickets in the Uprights Club, which provided a free buffet and open bar, which were very well stocked and staffed. The only drawback to the seats was they were very low in one of the end zones, so you couldn't really see the play on the field unless it was right in front of you on that end of the field, So that was disappointing.
