Charlotte Hornets History

The original Charlotte Hornets franchise joined the NBA in 1988 and, thanks to players such as Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Kendall Gill (and later, Glen Rice, Anthony Mason and Jamal Mashburn), enjoyed substantial success in the 1990s, starting with the 1992–93 season. Owner George Shinn moved the franchise to New Orleans in 2002.

But the NBA returned to Charlotte for the 2004–05 season with the expansion Bobcats, led by owner Robert L. Johnson, the first African-American majority owner of a team in one of the four major sports. In 2010, Michael Jordan took over majority ownership of the franchise, and in 2014, Jordan's team re-adopted the Charlotte Hornets name after the previous New Orleans Hornets became the Pelicans.

During the 2017–18 season, four-time All-Star Kemba Walker became Charlotte's all-time leading scorer, surpassing original Hornet Dell Curry.

My family and friends had an excellent time at the game. Prices were lower than games in Charlotte and we got to see LeBron & Shaq!! Best half-time show that I have experienced since we began attending the Bobcats games.

  • OK Game--Bad Venue Service

by sfk1 on 10/11/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 2 out of 5

As an exhibition game, I wasn't expecting anything great from the teams--just a chance to see a couple of great stars. That I did. Still when you spend this much on tickets, you expect it to be a total evening. Standing in concession lines for a huge part of the game isn't part of the evening fun. Don't the people in charge know that you can make a lot of money on a $4.50 hot dog or $6:00 beer if people can get to the counter to buy them and then get served in less then 5 minutes. That certainly wasn't the case. Didn't they know before hand that it was a sell out crowd?

  • Great Game

My family and I really enjoyed the game!

  • NBA-Bobcats vs Cavaliers

by Buzi on 10/11/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 4 out of 5

The game was as expected. Thought LeBron and Shaq played enough to get our moneys worth. Was a lot of fun and something my wife enjoyed too. I was impressed by the 5 dudes from Georgia that dunked using trampolines. Wish South Carolina had an NBA team as it was a real treat to have professional basketball in Charleston. The instant replay screens at the North Charleston Coliseum were small and fuzzy. There were no programs with the teams rosters to follow. Overall, was an enjoyable evening.

  • Some Charleston Need more of

by babyboyr on 10/11/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

I think it was something clear that Charleston Metro would love to have a local Professional Basketball Team and it show how the locals will support this kind of event.

  • Best Sporting Event in Charleston

by BiggC on 10/11/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

We don't get a lot of big sporting events in Charleston. It was great to see an NBA game in your hometown. LeBron and Shaq didn't disappoint.

  • unforgettable

by annabelle2 on 10/11/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

Pass standing in the rain, not allowing admittance before 6:30 pm the game was incredible and remarkable-the cost of food was highway robbery considering the economic situation. I love good sporting events, been to the super bowl this year and prayerfully am will be attending the nba all star game in dallas, tx. next year just wish you guys consider those people who has saved their hard earned money to attend these session and become people considerate.

  • NBA CLASSIC, YEAH!!

HAD AN AMAZING TIME WITH MY 16 YEAR OLD SON.

  • Bobcats vs Cavaliers

by Jargo9 on 10/11/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

Highly recommend. All time outs and the half time show was entertaining. The new additions to the Bobcats roster make them a competetive team and when Tyson Chandler becomes healthy they will be even better. Seeing Lebron James and Shaq on the same team was unbelievable. My only recommendation would be that the coliseum only had 1 location to buy memorabilia.

  • NBA play was excellent

We had a great time. My grandson is a real basketball fan. We would attend any future NBA games at the North Charleston Coliseum.

  • Bobcats vs. Cavaliers was awesome

by Joefly on 10/11/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

The game was good for a preseason game. There was too many fouls called that should not been called. The vendors was not quick for all the people that was there. That could improve. The lines at the vendors caused alot of traffic jams in the coliseum. Overall it was great.

Good seats, good entertainment, expensive beer.

  • It was ok

by jefft1699 on 10/11/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 3 out of 5

The game itself was only preseason. But the venue wasn't suitable for a professional game. It was just too small.

  • Awesome

by randyinsc on 10/11/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

It was great to be sitting midcourt, so close to the floor and to see LaBron and Shaq play. I have watched them for years on tv and never thought i'd have the chance to see in person. Since they played in charleston, It became a reality. I hope Charleston can schedule more games like that in the future.

  • Cavs vs Bobcats outstanding!!!

by FreddieT on 10/11/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

Went to the NBA classic game 10/10/09 with seats in section 50 row A. Best ticket purchase EVER! Seats were right next to the Cavalier player bench. Thats right, spent most of the game about one foot from Lebron and Shaq. Wife took great pics to post on Facebook. I would definately go again as long as I could get the same seats.

  • CLASS ACT

by 1BettyCrocker on 10/11/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

I got the tickest as a gift for my father and my son. Lets just say this event was one for the record books!! My daddy is a very quiet man however he was on his feet for most of the game. I can't thank ticketmaster enough for the idea and the great customer service. You ROCK!!

  • HOT TIME IN CAROLINA!!!!!!

by MSAJ67 on 10/11/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

The North Charleston Coliseum was buzzing with excitement about the pre-season game between the Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Charlotte Bobcats!! All operations went smoothly from the parking lot to the entering of the coliseum. All I could here were questions of "if Lebron James was playing tonight?" My dad and I found our seats. The coliseum was almost sold out. You could feel the high energy in the place. Lebron takes court. He does what he does! The crowd goes wild. Shaq comes in. He holds the team together. The entertainment is pleasurable. The group AE out of Atlanta takes human flight to a whole another level. It was absolutely mind blowing. It was no surprise to me that MY Cavaliers WON-102 TO 96! I enjoyed the game!!!!
