Charlotte Hornets History

The original Charlotte Hornets franchise joined the NBA in 1988 and, thanks to players such as Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Kendall Gill (and later, Glen Rice, Anthony Mason and Jamal Mashburn), enjoyed substantial success in the 1990s, starting with the 1992–93 season. Owner George Shinn moved the franchise to New Orleans in 2002.

But the NBA returned to Charlotte for the 2004–05 season with the expansion Bobcats, led by owner Robert L. Johnson, the first African-American majority owner of a team in one of the four major sports. In 2010, Michael Jordan took over majority ownership of the franchise, and in 2014, Jordan's team re-adopted the Charlotte Hornets name after the previous New Orleans Hornets became the Pelicans.

During the 2017–18 season, four-time All-Star Kemba Walker became Charlotte's all-time leading scorer, surpassing original Hornet Dell Curry.

Excellent pre-season game between the Bobcats and Cavs. It was great to have Shaq and King James in the area... The Coliseum needs to bring in more events like this...

  • A GREAT Experience!!!!

It was my first time going to an NBA game and it was amazing being able to see the players in person versus seeing them on tv. I really enjoyed myself and hope they continue to have different NBA games at the Coliseum in the years to come.

  • Bobcats or Cavaliers

by DkandLvly on 10/12/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

The game was awesome, I was so happy to go to an NBA game right here in Charleston, it's been 4 years since I have been to a game. I really missed the Bobcats and wanted them to win, but it was so great seeing Shak and LJ there. You must do this more often. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  • Fantastic

by AmarettoandCoke on 10/12/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 4 out of 5

I thought the event was overall great and generated a lot of excitement fo the Charleston area. I think it would great if the Bobcats had a few regular games here that count. The fans obviously wanted to see Shaq and Lebron but got to see some up and coming stars on the Bob Cats, I know that the fans were disappointed in Lebron only playing a a period and half. Chuck

  • Go Cavs!

by TooBlessed on 10/12/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

My family and i really enjoyed thegame. Living in Charleston, as we know, there's not a professional basketball team here. What a shame!!!! the arena was sold out! i would buy tickets again to see it here at the arena. The players were awesome! on both teams. Labron was just being Labron and Shaq attack was doing what he's made to do. Mo, Daniel, Barrett, Jackson, and all the others that played did a terrific job. it was exciting for my son to see them. i would really like if they can work out something to bring this kind of revenue to the charleston area with professional basketball again.

  • Host City Not Very Friendly

by Nancyb1167 on 10/12/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 3 out of 5

To have spent over $200 for tickets & have driven 3 hours to the game and had to wait outside in the rain for more than an hour to get inside the arena was not acceptable. Once inside, we stood in line for over an hour to get food from the concessions and the staff was very rude and treated us as if we were bothering them. I spent over $40 at the concessions on food and drinks & when I asked for a straw the young lady told me she didn't have one. I personally would will not ever attend another event at this arena nor will I recommend it to anyone. Sorry. Having lived in Charleston for ver 5 years before I was very ashamed to return and be treated this way.

  • Bobcats in the lowcountry

by Tiburon2674 on 10/12/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 3 out of 5

I have to imagine they put on this preseason game in Charleston as a means of introducing the Lowcountry area to the closest NBA team, the Charlotte Bobcats. However, the Cavaliers have such a strong national following (especially with LeBron and Shaq) that their fans far outnumbered any Bobcats fans in the house. Was glad to see Charlotte brought along their mascot and dance team, and did certainly try to get the crowd in the game. It looks like there are quite a few basketball fans in Charleston!

  • It was wonderful!!!

by Kandi2009 on 10/12/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

I am a Shaq fan for life...I love me some Shaq!!!

  • AN EXCITING CHARLESTON NBA GAME!!!

by BigPlay on 10/11/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

All smiles for Charleston, SC. The NBA was a "slam dunk" for this area. LeBron James and the "Shack Attack" was a hit. Great exciting entertainment from the Bobcats-- Great to see Owner Bob Johnson in the Charleston area supporting his team and taking pictures with the fans. More could have been gained if the star players randomly took pics with some of the fans and kids for entertainment.

  • lebron and shaq

by shaqfan on 10/11/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 4 out of 5

This was an awesome event and I wish more teams would come down ehre and play. They are two things I was upset about one mroe than the other. First the whole not selling clevland stuff was upsetting since thats who most of the people that come wanted to see and buy jerseys for. The main thing was qutographs from the palyers, when i go to charlotte thats all they do while shooting around and after a game. For some reason here though its to big of an issue to allow for whatever reasons are unkown and a lot of people just want a handshake or an autograph so they can have a memory for the res of their life, because it mey never happen again.

  • Cavs vs Bobcats

by ZYDRUNASFAN on 10/11/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

My seats were great! I was only 5 yards from the players. The first string played the whole first half. I would love to see the Cleveland Cavs play in Charleston again.

  • It was amazing and I enjoyed myself.

by MsMo24 on 10/11/09North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

I enjoyed the game, it was crowded but everything and everybody handled themselves very professional. The atmosphere was outstanding and I just had the best time on 10/10/2009, and I will be at other games or events more often.
