  • Incredible venue and astounding band

by Vincent on 11/1/21Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club - PortsmouthRating: 5 out of 5

Let me first start with the one negative; the venue has obstructed view seats that weren't immediately obvious when choosing tickets. So if you're in the bar area there's a good chance you won't be able to see the stage. That said, they have TV's casting the stage on every wall. Overall though the venue is just gorgeous and most of the seating is wonderful. They really went so far above and behind to capture a certain vibe and clearly hit a home run. The food and drinks were excellent, but this place should have a better bourbon selection. The sound system was also perfectly dialed in. The band... What can I say, Charles and Eric Harland were already favorites of mine but these guys blew my socks off. The pianist was a real standout but every second of music was truly outstanding. I hope to see this group many more times and I'll be back to Jimmy's for sure.

The new Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club in Portsmouth, NH is truly amazing! The venue is perfect for viewing and listening to concerts. The staff were very attentive and the cocktails were great. Charles Lloyd and jazz crew were great, too! Highly recommend.

Everything was wonderful. Charles and his band were excelled beyond! Piano player Gerald Clayton was amazing. The venue is beautiful. Kudos especially to the wait staff who are so great, especially with a full house!

The show was spectacular! From start to finish the music was amazing, Charles' stage presence is unforgettable. I was also very impressed with the other band members, I actually came to see Bill Frisell but was blown away with Charles' saxophone skills as well as the slide guitar player (can't remember his name)

  • Charles Lloyd is the man!

by Internationalist on 4/17/17Royce Hall - UCLA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

We arrived early in anticipation of a crowd, we were correct, and it was an amazing throw back to my childhood listening to the sounds of one of the greatest. A man that can make the sax flutter, soft fades of breezy sounds, hip/hop beats enmeshed with incredible drummer technique, and the bands complementary support to each reverberation of the sax. I was able to close my eyes, listen and imagine visions of traveling in space, only to wake up and see the real thing. Now that's what music events of jazz culture is all about. Peace!

  • Magical

by Pmarsh on 4/17/17Royce Hall - UCLA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

They don't call Charles Lloyd an American treasure for nothing! He is a Jazz Master, but not just jazz, he crosses all the lines. When he puts a group together, only the most acclaimed and accomplished musicians get to play with him The evening was magical, the crowd floated along with Charles, the Marvels, and Lucinda Williams. It was a concert like no other - go see them if they play near you!

I was not sure what to expect at this event. It turned out to exceed any expectations I had. The ensemble's ability to blend traditional Indian instruments with Western instruments was amazing!

  • Amazing performance!

by licorne on 2/9/16Lincoln Theatre - COLUMBUSRating: 5 out of 5

This was an hour and 45 minutes of exceptional jazz, saxophone, flute, guitars and drums. Well coordinated and the crowd was swaying to the beat. They got two standing ovations.

  • Without Greg Leisz, was this REALLY The Marvels?

by DukDukGuus on 2/9/16Lincoln Theatre - COLUMBUSRating: 4 out of 5

"Hello, my name's Duk. I'm a Frisell addict." "Hello, Duk!" I've seen Bill play over the past fifteen years in six or seven different "bands" in four states and have never been less than thrilled with the performances, which are manifold in their artistry. When we found out they were playing within a two hour drive, well. Let's go! Charles Lloyd took two of his regular guys, Reuben Rogers on Fender Precision and the amazing Eric Harland on the kit. For fun, I think, he took on the dynamic duo of Frisell on guitar and Greg Leisz on pedal steel. Those two play together on a level that can best be described as four hands, one brain. So it was with no small amount of dismay that we sat down in front of a stage that had NO pedal steel. Shoot. After shaking off that disappointment, the rest of the show was heavenly, if a tad short. All four seemed to be having a ball, Lloyd often setting aside his sax or flute and wandering off to the side of the stage to revel in the beauty of what was then "The Bill Frisell Trio." I live for those moments of invention, with a few great players doodling and noodling over original or classic tunes. The drawn-out "Shenandoah" was a stand-out. Their two-song encore started with Frisell soloing the hymn "All My Trials, eventually joined by first Lloyd and then the rhythm section. The show closed with Billy Preston's "You Are So Beautiful." Indeed. The Lincoln Theater folk were friendly, professional and clearly proud of the spiffy renovation. The sound guys were doing a great job, with one minor suggestion to get that bass player a bit higher up in the mix. Don't know that I've ever heard a drummer better-mic'ed, live. Good show!

  • He still has it!

My first live experience with Charles was in 1972 at the Lighthouse. I have seen him as often as possible since then. Much love is always in the air but I haven't seen Charles have this much fun since Master Higgins. Alive, loose and swingin'. Can't say no more even if I could. Peace.
